Nikon D800E Dr. Elliot McGucken Fine Art Photography for Los Angeles Gallery Show!

Yet more photos and more final edits! I was up at 4:30 AM the past four days shooting sunrises! Awesome sunrises over Point Dume thie time of year in Malibu.

Then I spent all day today moving over 75 large photos into the gallery! Most of these are framed and matted with 13"x19" metallic prints and an 18"x24" mat and a 3" wood-grain black frame! They look awesome! Stop on by Bel Air Camera's Gallery downstairs if you are close to UCLA or in Westwood. Give me a head's up, and I will meet you there if I'm free.

I thought I was done a couple days ago for December's LA Gallery show, but art is never done until it's done, and even then. . . Will be busy printing and framing in nice large, matted formats and frames and museum glass! Five of these photos will be printed on 40" x 60" floating wall mounted metal sheets! I think I know which--will share photos of the photos hanging on the walls!

And I am mounting some on plexiglass/acryllic--front mounting them! Some I am printing on lossy fuji-crystal archival paper too, and then front mounting 40"x60" versions to plexiglass--will send photos!

The secret to HDR photography is that you want people to say, "Woe dude--that's unreal!" And not, "Dude--that's not real!" "Unreal" is the word they use when they're trying to figure out the photo--what makes it cool--is it a photo? Is it painted? How'd it come to be--how'd you bend the light that way? "That's not real," is what they say if you have the saturation/HDR/ etc. turned up too high. :)

Some (almost) final edits for December's Los Angeles Gallery Show! Printing them on metallic paper at 13" x 19" and mounting and framing them on a 4mm 18x24 white mat and 2" dark wood frame. Also printing some 40" x 70" whihc is over three feet by five feet! Wish you all could come (and hang out with the goddesses)!

Let me know your favs.!

Something I came up with while experimenting with displaying large amounts of Twitter data. In this case all the Tweets about the TEDxWaterloo conference. Using speech bubble images generated live for the Twitter Wall I created for the event.

These are all the public Twitter messages sent during the event that mention the word tedxwaterloo. Each column in this display represents the messages from a 10 minute period.

another pocket camera to consider: the Ricoh GX100

1/1.75" 10-megapixel CCD

5.1-15.3mm f/2.5-4.4 lens (24-72mm equivalent)

CCD-shift image stabilization

manual exposure and focus modes

1" thick

Up until now, I dismissed this as being too expensive for what you get (i.e., a small sensor with too many pixels), but I just noticed the price has dropped to $440. That's only $60 more than the Fuji F100fd, and that $60 buys the all-important (at least to me) 24mm-equivalent wide end, almost a stop of aperture at the wide end, manual controls (physical controls too, not just menus), superior macro capability, shorter full-press shutter lag, a hot shoe, and RAW image capture.

The catch is the image quality at the lowest sensitivity doesn't impress me. Of course, it only gets worse at higher sensitivities. In DPReview's side-by-side comparison, the Panasonic LX2 looks better at lowest sensitivity, despite similar sensor size and Panasonic's less-than-stellar reputation for image processing.

The GX100's Raw capability lets us see what's going on: it looks like the lens suffers from low contrast. This helps explain the other image quality problems. To make up for the contrast, the camera cranks the tone curve and sharpening way up. This shrinks the already small dynamic range and increases the apparent noise. I now believe the FX35 is suffering from the same problem, made worse by an even smaller sensor and a mania for soul-crushing noise reduction.

But that's just one aspect of image quality. What stands out in the DPReview sample shots (especially the landscape shot of the church) is the remarkable corner-to-corner sharpness. One look at the MTF chart (see brochure) shows this is not a fluke of the reviewed camera, but is conscious decision by the lens designers to trade contrast for across-the-frame consistency.

Even more important is that this camera appears to be friendly to post-processing. Even in JPEG mode, it appears to do less noise reduction than either the FX35 or F100fd. And then there's Raw mode, which renders moot any problems with noise reduction, white balance, contrast, or sharpness.

So consumers in this market segment, while better off than ever before, are still left with a hard choice. Fully admitting that I am only extrapolating about the still unavailable F100fd, and am only looking at reviews for the GX100, here's how I break it down. The FX35 is cheapest, smallest, fastest, and has (probably by far) the best movie mode. The F100fd is almost as small, is midway in price, and offers the best image quality (contrast, color, resolution, noise, and dynamic range). The GX100 offers significantly wider angles (with sharp corners), Raw image capture, manual control - generally speaking, it's a Sigma DP1 for the rest of us (just like the DP1 was supposed to be the Leica for the rest of us).

Despite a price that is well beyond my budget, I'd say the GX100 looks like the choice for me. If I were still in the market for a pocket camera, that is.

Instead, I think I'll wait another generation for Ricoh and Fuji to iron out some more kinks or for their current-generation cameras to drop below $300. Hopefully, that will be soon — because once the US Dollar reaches parity with the Yen, party's over folks.

12 Megapixel vs. 8 Megapixel. Photo's made in the same setting with ISO 200 and flash. No further alterations. You can see the size difference between 12 (left) and 8 (right) Megapixel.

Fuji F50fd left, Canon Powershot A720 IS right.

Fuji has better colour rendition (IMO), but both images noisier than should be. I choose the Canon over de Fujifilm since the Noise reduction algorithm of the Fuji really falters at anything over ISO400 and makes the image splotchy. Canon goes softer and smoother, but more to my liking.

Inset is crop from 1:1 size (Canon) compared to 1:1 from Fuji F50fd 12MP.

I brought the f50d back and exchanged it for the A720.

Alright, so I got a new camera today, and I'm super excited! The one I used before was my parents', so now I actually have my own to mess with! I paid for most of it, too. Yay! As soon as we got home, I started playing with it. It has 5x optical zoom and 8.1 megapixels. I'm lovin' it! Just a little clump of clover. Testing out the closeup capability on this camera.

Just as IP camera manufacturers are widening their offering and making it increasingly difficult for integrators to continue arguing the case for analogue, so lens producers are widening their megapixel offerings. Fujinon have introduced a 32x megapixel zoom, the D32x15.6HR4D, which will support resolution of up to 1.3 megapixels. Wide aperture can be F3.9 and the auto iris can be DC or video type with preset function.

The optical design avoids the problem of focus shift between day and night-time modes and integrators will find the unit valuable on projects requiring 24-hour surveillance. Perimeter security at large sites such as military bases and highways are obvious applications for end-users demanding a high level of Rotakin performance.

My Pink Lady flowering quince has been blooming since late December, and just now it is coming into its own. This year I noticed that the blossoms are more uniform in color than in previous years. Many more are on the way.

I took this photograph using my Sony DSC-RX100, but instead of using the Sweep technology, I stitched together 4 photographs, as the Sweep really is meant for a larger area than a bonsai. The image I made gives me a resolution of about 52 megapixels.

This 3-D pano is unusual in another respect. I figured out a way, at least for this picture, for the pink to remain pink in an anaglyph image. I will do more testing, and then probably write about it in the future.

Stop on by the Bel Air Camera Gallery and Enjoy Dr. Elliot McGucken's epic fine art photography in person!

Vanice Beach sunset through the V! Well, I went back through over 100 photos tonight and re-edited them!

These were shot with Nikon's best D800 with the 14-24mm wide-angle Nikkor lens. 7 exposures were taken at 1 EV intervals, and combined in photomatix to bring out the shadows and highlights.

Rather large HDR (high dynamic range) photo--you can see great detail both near and far! View the detail at full size!

This is a 130 Megapixel Panorama stitched together using 24 frames shot handhold with a 135mm lens on a Canon 5D Mark II.

You might notice some JPG artifacts in the sky. This was caused by a quite high compression algorithm used due to the 20MB file-size limit of Flickr. The fine JPG was around 135MB.
