I went out to capture some Christmas fun at 2.7 megapixels. Because film isn’t challenging enough. Nikon D1 digital camera, still a pro, even if it isn’t up to modern ‘Hype’. It can get the job done. These were shot at ISO 200 and f/22. Using a Kodak DKL Schneider-Kreuznach Retina Xenon 50mm f/1.9 lens adapted to Nikon. That lens is late 1960s vintage repurposed from a retired Kodak Instamatic Reflex 126 camera. I meant to set the shutter speed as well, but in the end, I forgot and left the D1 to its own devices. These are Downtown, Ogden, Utah shot on Boxing Day 2021.

This is a 91 megapixel panoramic merge created from 17 different frames. You can see zoomed in details on my site- danhawk.com/danhawk/the-upper-falls-of-multnomah-creek
The kids and I hiked up past the upper observatory deck of Multnomah Falls to see the two waterfalls that most visitors never see. Dutchman falls is a smaller cascade over a mound of basalt chunks and then a gentle pour from the pull beneath. There's been a log in front of the falls for a couple years now, but hey, that's nature.
The trail continues to wind up into the forest, but not before a beautiful view of Weisendanger Falls. There are a bunch of logs to climb if you want to get right up near the falls, but it's pretty easy even for my 7 year old. Weisendanger can fluctuate quite a bit, and this photo shows it at a particularly light flow. I'm looking forward to coming back once the rains start up again and we get more snow pack.

I was going to be cheeky and ask how you like my new Fuji GFX? But that would be a misleading question. Here's what I actually did:
To isolate the subject from a potentially cluttering background I used the Brenizer Method to -
- Using a hefty tripod
- Using a Sony A7
- Using a Nikon Nikkor-P 105mm f/2.5 K pre-Ai (Xenotar)
- Using a cheap macro slider bar to center the lens nodal point over the tripods swivel point
- Take 20 to 30 photos (several rows by several columns overlapping 30 to 50 percent)
Processing -
- Using RawTherapee
- Using a "linear" camera profile
- Process images
- Using Hugin "Simple" interface
- Load/align processed images
- Using Hugin "Advanced" interface
- Allow application to set (HUGE) image size
- Stitch image
- Using Rawtherapee
- Using "Film Simulation" Fuji Classic Negative
- Using Vignette
- Adjust Exposure/Brightness
- Lower LAB Contrast/Chroma
See? Easy Peasy. I'll probably write something on my blog about these as there are a lot of details that I considered in this process. Including considering why I used a relatively small aperture f/2.5 lens when wider apertures are normally used in this method.

Alas, it doesn't work, hence the fifty cent price at the Flea Market. The Canon Powershot A5, which came out the same year, is a much more satisfying camera just to hold and to look at, as an industrial design object, but the Kodak has a funky, plastic kid's toy like charm. At $600, though, would you have given it to your third grader?

From the archives... this was shot in 2002 with a Sony DSC-S30 (1.3 megapixels). Was amongst the best digital cameras at the time : )
This is SOOC
That's 140 megapixels. But not quite, because there is no way to upload a 140 megapixel jpeg to Flickr. I had to downsample this 50%, and save as a jpeg with a compression of 8 to get under the 20 megabyte Flickr limit.
Anyway, the usual spot in Sabino Canyon, Tucson, Arizona. The monsoon finally arrived, the temperatures decreased slightly, and the clouds make for pretty pictures. [FYI I desaturated and lowered the contrast of the clouds by 30%].
This is another exercise in "über-resolution" processing. Here, I am combining two processes.
This image is a panorama stitched in CS4 from four vertically-oriented images. Each of the four images is a 57 megapixel image superresolved using PhotoAcute from a burst of eight to ten RAW frames.
So, there you have it. With some practice, I think I can take all these data in less than 30 seconds. A multiple row panorama would yield better results. But, panoramas are like puzzles. Screw up on piece, and the panorama is ruined. This combined panorama/superresolution technique seems more robust to field error.
We'll see.

Well, I went back through over 100 photos tonight and re-edited them! I thought I was done a couple days ago for December's LA Gallery show, but art is never done until it's done, and even then. . . Will be busy printing and framing in nice large, matted formats and frames and museum glass! Five of these photos will be printed on 40" x 60" floating wall mounted metal sheets! I think I know which--will share photos of the photos hanging on the walls!
The secret to HDR photography is that you want people to say, "Woe dude--that's unreal!" And not, "Dude--that's not real!" "Unreal" is the word they use when they're trying to figure out the photo--what makes it cool--is it a photo? Is it painted? How'd it come to be--how'd you bend the light that way? "That's not real," is what they say if you have the saturation/HDR/ etc. turned up too high. :)
Some (almost) final edits for December's Los Angeles Gallery Show! Printing them on metallic paper at 13" x 19" and mounting and framing them on a 4mm 18x24 white mat and 2" dark wood frame. Also printing some 40" x 70" whihc is over three feet by five feet! Wish you all could come (and hang out with the goddesses)!
Let me know your favs.!

The universe itself is God and the universal outpouring of its soul. --Chrysippus (Quoted by Cicero in De Natura Deorum)
Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness
Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun
Conspiring with him how to load and bless
With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run;
To bend with apples the moss'd cottage-trees,
And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core;
To swell the gourd, and plump the hazel shells
With a sweet kernel; to set budding more,
And still more, later flowers for the bees,
Until they think warm days will never cease,
For Summer has o'er-brimm'd their clammy cells. --To Autumn. by John Keats

To isolate the subject from a potentially cluttering background I used the Brenizer Method to -
- Using a hefty tripod
- Using a Sony A7
- Using a Nikon Nikkor-P 105mm f/2.5 K pre-Ai (Xenotar)
- Using a cheap macro slider bar to center the lens nodal point over the tripods swivel point
- Take 20 to 30 photos (several rows by several columns overlapping 30 to 50 percent)
Processing -
- Using RawTherapee
- Using a "linear" camera profile
- Process images
- Using Hugin "Simple" interface
- Load/align processed images
- Using Hugin "Advanced" interface
- Allow application to set (HUGE) image size
- Stitch image
- Using Rawtherapee
- Using "Film Simulation" Fuji Classic Negative
- Using Vignette
- Adjust Exposure/Brightness
- Lower LAB Contrast/Chroma
See? Easy Peasy. I'll probably write something on my blog about these as there are a lot of details that I considered in this process. Including considering why I used a relatively small aperture f/2.5 lens when wider apertures are normally used in this method.

Yet more photos and more final edits! I was up at 4:30 AM the past four days shooting sunrises! Awesome sunrises over Point Dume thie time of year in Malibu.
Then I spent all day today moving over 75 large photos into the gallery! Most of these are framed and matted with 13"x19" metallic prints and an 18"x24" mat and a 3" wood-grain black frame! They look awesome! Stop on by Bel Air Camera's Gallery downstairs if you are close to UCLA or in Westwood. Give me a head's up, and I will meet you there if I'm free.
