Constituents: Egg white, a protein. 90% water 10% protein
Material+ Process+ Structure: Egg white consists of curled up balls of amino acid chains suspended in water. These chains are composed of amino acids, some of which are hydrophilic while others are hydrophobic. In a freshly cracked egg, these amino acid chains are wound up in a ball, with the hydrophobic parts of the chain inside and the hydrophilic parts exposed to the water. When an egg white is agitated, these chains come loose and interact with the water and other chains. Instead of winding into balls again, they connect with like amino acids on other chains, forming a matrix within the water. When the water dries out, the framework - a porous, interconnected structure remains- which is what we see in the SEM images. The scaffold on which these material form is bubbly- made up of roughly same sized spheres packed together which lends itself to the 120 degree connections we see through the images.
More thoughts: It's interesting how the same material can be a flat fibrous looking sheet along one dimension and a foam along all others. It shows how the process and mold are essential to biomaterial fabrication/ function. I think it also pulls attention to the fundamental role of hydration in biomaterial processes. Water facilitates the formation of the foam- which ends up becoming the defined structure we observe. It also allows the material to be soft, flattening and taking the shape of its mold. It's important to think about processes that allow more than one function/structure in order to make multi-functional things.

Cabinet of the (Material & Virtual) World, Commonplace (2009)
The objects to which we ascribe meaning are central in determining our place in the world. However, in our contemporary society ‘things of meaning’ can no longer be solely placed within the physical realm. This cabinet brings together both the material and virtual worlds with sixteen drawers for physical archiving on one face and sixteen corresponding engraved patterns linking to digital data on the other.
Each pattern is a unique universal (data matrix) barcode which can be decoded to allow the user’s meaningful data (i.e. digital photos, videos) to pop up when interfaced though a camera phone or computer. Although each code is permanently engraved, the digital content that is linked to each pattern can be easily changed, rearranged, or updated via a website.
This project is an ongoing investigation based on the historical cabinets of the sixteenth and seventeenth century. Throughout the Renaissance, objects representative of god (naturalia) and man (artificialia) were displayed in cabinets as an index of their proprietors’ world view. This cabinet borrows the structure of the cabinets of the past, but instead frames a contemporary context. Since we are no longer concerned with the dichotomy of nature and art, but with the duality of the material and the virtual, this cabinet brings together both physical and digital space in one archival system.
