The ornate wrought ironworks that have become a symbol of Charleston made by African American blacksmiths since the 1730s. Shown here is the Snake Gate located at 329 East Bay St. in Charleston made by master blacksmith Philip Simmons who left a legacy of over 500 pieces of ornamental ironworks. The Philip Simmons Foundation, Inc. has turned his home and workshop into a museum and they offer walking tours of his ironworks (every fourth Saturday 4-6) and ironworking demonstrations (every Saturday 2pm).
