Summer is here. For me that means we went out to Grimsby Beach and had a swim in Lake Ontario. That is a bit of a late start for me, but the start of my Summer 2021 is in the books. We arrived as the sun was beginning to set over Lake Ontario, and by itself that would have been a good evening. But, as I had hoped/anticipated, Rob (a Grimsby Beach resident) was sitting on the remains of the old pier playing his sax and that is always a recipe for a special evening. But he left the pier to stand around playing on the beach proper. A few people were setting something up on the pier, glass enclosed candles, a table with champagne, flowers, brownies (I think), a photographer was setting up a video camera on a tripod. My curiosity was aroused so I sauntered over casually and mingled with a few spectators and noticed a trail of red rose petals was sprinkled on the path leading from the top of the cliff to the setup on the pier. A boy of some 10 years (little hard to tell) was standing around anticipating something and I noticed his yellow shoes. Curiosity got the better of me so I asked around as to what was happening. Turns out this was about to be a marriage proposal for a lady named Brittany and the full Hollywood treatment had been laid on. Rob and his sax, an unplanned addition to the proceedings, were working on playing Wonderful World in anticipation of a Yes response. I must admit it did cross my mind that Yes was not guaranteed so I asked Rob if he knew Cry Me A River, purely as a backup. (Somebody has to thing of these things!). A lady next to me spoke up and said it was going to be a Yes so I asked how she knew. I was politely informed ‘I am her mother! And it was a real job to not let her know what this surprise was.’ Apparently a grand tour of Niagara wineries featured significantly in the distraction process. A bit of a wait later, an elegant lady in a white formal dress walked down the rose petal path, was greeted by the gentleman on the pier, and the event got underway including the question being posed in traditional fashion: on one knee. The answer BTW was yes, so Rob did not have to play Cry Me A River. All through this the clearly excited boy was right up there in the action. Turns out he was the son of Brittany and he clearly was on board with all this. So, as for the shoes… While all the setup was underway, I had spotted the boy’s yellow shoes so I asked him if he would mind if I took a photo, not of him but just of his cool yellow shoes beside the rose petal path. He said yes. Yes must run in the family I guess. So all-in-all it was a great evening at the beach: a swim to launch Summer 2021, Rob on the sax serenading everyone and a cool marriage proposal to top it all off. Doesn’t get much better. The rest of the Summer has a lot to live up to! - JW

there's a nice little photo story, I shot by accident...
see the kissing couple on the left corner? she's sitting on a bench and he's on his knees in front of her.
so... when I took about 5-7 pictures of our shadows on the ground (in various silly poses), I didn't pay much attention to them. when we walked past them, I saw that she was crying and staring at a ring on her finger ;) when I was at home I took a closer look at the photos, and I realized that I captured the whole story how he popped the question! from when he is holding the ring in his hands, to her jiggling like a little child, to him putting the ring on her finger... and finally... the kiss.
I regret it so much, that I didn't check the photos immediately on the bridge and asked for their email adresses. I think it would have been so nice to send them the pictures of the proposal. but on the other hand... is this the right moment to interrupt and ask for email-adresses? probably not...
so, in my memory the brooklyn bridge will always remain as the "cute-couple-getting-engaged"-bridge :)
When my youngest son (Cameron) asked me to help him pull off an epic marriage proposal to his girlfriend (Kenzie), of course I was ALL IN!!!
He painted the proposal on 25 king size bed sheets that were staked to the ground which we then just "happened" to fly over while taking her on her first flight in a small airplane!
I created a video of the event and posted it on YouTube HERE
I don't think either one of them will be forgetting the details of that day any time soon! ;-) Congrats Cameron & Kenzie!

This impressive portrait is the earliest painted portrait in the National Portrait Gallery's collection. The inscription records that the portrait was painted on 29 October 1505 by order of Herman Rinck, an agent for the Holy Roman Emperor, Maximilian I. The portrait was sent to Margaret of Austria as part of an unsuccessful marriage proposal, as Henry hoped to marry Maximilian's daughter Margaret of Savoy following his first wife Elizabeth's death in 1503. Note that he isn't wearing a chain of the Order of the Garter - England's highest and most coveted order of chivalry - instead, he chose to be diplomatic and selected the Order of the Golden Fleece, founded in Burgundy and associated with the Austrian Habsburgs.
Born in south-west Wales, Henry Tudor had a tenuous claim to the English throne through his mother’s descent from Edward III. Skilful and shrewd, Henry defeated Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485 and was crowned on the battlefield. Henry married Edward IV’s daughter, Elizabeth of York. They named their first son Arthur after the legendary British king in order to inspire the people of England and Wales to accept the rule of the new Tudor dynasty.
This is the earliest painted portrait in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery in London. The inscription records that it was painted on 29 October 1505. The frame is integral with the panel painting and thus original, being made out of a single piece of oak, but for an applied soft wood moulding forming the outer element of the arched top. Gessoed and water gilt, the gilding modern (later black paint on outer moulding removed, 1972), 1 1/8 in. (29 mm) wide.
Henry VII, (1457-1509), reigned 1485-1509, by an unknown Netherlandish artist, painted 29 October 1505. Oil on panel.

While touring the landscape of Chanticleer Gardens in Wayne, Pa. I noticed a couple having a lovely picnic under some shade trees. They had everything right down the the blanket and woven basket. When things took a turn for the romantic, I gave them their privacy. Hope she said 'yes'.
we're gonna do it. this is how i decided to tell my extended family:
ME: hey guess what!
THEM: ...
ME: i'm gonna get married!
so far i've been met with varying degrees of excitement, but the person i was most worried about telling -- my sister, who's had a rough month -- was by far the happiest about it.
luckily it is already WELL established that i'm the weirdo black sheep of the family, so hopefully that will head a lot of annoying conversations off at the pass. thanks for small favors.
This was the highlight of yesterday. We got to witness the sweetest guy propose to his girlfriend. I was able to get this picture right as he proposed! We hooped and hollared afterward and then went down and congratulated them. They were so adorable and so gracious that we got a picture of the propsal. My mom ended up taking pictures of them afterward with their sweet little son. It was the best way to end a great day
She probably said yes before, but he gets down on his knees in the Sanibel surf to pop the question all over again as a professional photographer records the scene for posterity.
Arkalalah Parade
Arkansas City, KS
This fine gent entered a mini-house on a trailer sporting a "Marry Me" sign over the back porch as a float in this year's Arkalalah Parade. Manning the porch, when his float reached the appropriate place along the route, the suitor stepped off from it and invited his gal out onto Main Street USA, and popped the question. He gets 5-stars for proposal creativity, providing a proposal which she will probably not soon forget.
She said "Yes!".
I proposed to Rachael Madeline in March by developing film with her, as we did on our first date three years ago. She discovered the message when I asked her to return to the bathroom (*cough* darkroom) and squeegee the developed strip of film for drying. Thanks, Ilford HP5 Plus.
I went through nearly 5 pounds of Sweethearts Candy before I could find a few quality, readable “MARRY ME” hearts LOL. I epoxy’d them into the jewelry case so they would stay put. We met on Valentine’s day so I thought it would be appropriate to propose on Valentine’s day with a heart shaped diamond.
Interesting trivia fact: one out of every 40 NECCO heart candies should be a ”MARRY ME” heart – though in my 5 pound statistical sample it was more like 1 in every 500 LOL.
Happy belated Valentine’s Day everyone!
