Who ever said Southern California doesn't have Fall color, just didn't look hard enough! We took a little road trip to Idyllwild and beyond today, looking for some color. Not a lot during this drought, but what we DID find was beautiful!

I took this picture of the treehouse in my backyard. I liked how the tree made your eyes look at the whole picture by following the branches. I wanted the picture to be fairly symmetrical so I centred the treehouse and the two main branches. I also changed the leaves to make them more orange because they were yellow before but the orange looked better to me.
A fire destroyed the Chicago Blue Island Maple Tree Inn restaurant. The building was built in the 1890's and the restaurant was here for decades. I heard it was a gas fuel fire. I do hope the Maple Tree Inn will be rebuilt. I went for a beer here back in 2016. Wish I went back a few more times
Wandiligong is a town in north-eastern Victoria in the alpine region around 330 kilometres from Melbourne. Established in the 1850s as part of the Victorian Gold Rush, Wandiligong became a hub for many gold miners, including a large Chinese community. At its peak, the town was home to over two thousand inhabitants and boasted shops, churches, a public library, halls and even an hotel. Much has changed since those heady days of the gold rush, and the picturesque town nestled in a valley and built around the Morses Creek, is now a sleepy little town full of picturesque houses which are often let to visitors to the area. The whole town is registered with the National Trust of Australia for its historic landscape and buildings of historic value.

Some species, hybrids and cultivars of vervain are used as ornamental plants. They are valued in butterfly gardening in suitable climates, attracting Lepidoptera such as the Hummingbird Hawk-moth (Macroglossum stellatarum), Chocolate Albatross (Appias lyncida), or the Pipevine Swallowtail (Battus philenor), and also hummingbirds, especially Common Vervain (V. officinalis), which is also grown as a honey plant.
Vervain has longstanding use in herbalism and folk medicine, usually as a herbal tea. Nicholas Culpeper's 1652 The English Physitian discusses folk uses. Among other effects, it may act as a galactagogue and possibly sex steroid analogue. The plants are also sometimes used as abortifacient.
The essential oil of various species - mainly Common Vervain - is traded as Spanish Verbena oil. Considered inferior to oil of Lemon Verbena (Aloysia citrodora) in perfumery, it is of some commercial importance for herbalism and it seems to be a promising source of medical compounds. Verveine, the famous green liqueur from the region of Le Puy-en-Velay (France) is flavored with these vervains.
Verbena plants are drought-resistant, tolerating full to partial sun, and enjoy well-drained, average soils. Once the plants are established, they require little care and will spread out to cover the flower bed space allotted for them.

This huge maple is on the border of my yard and my neighbours. Every year about this time the leaves start to change to orange. It also loses its leaves early. It could be that this is caused from stress.
Well I planned a 'tree swaying the wind' long exposure shot for this morning... and then I found that my Lee Big Stopper filter has been completely smashed. I had to go with f22 and a rather shorter exposure than I really wanted, so I may revisit this idea later in the 365. Quite annoyed about the filter, they are not cheap or easy to find.
There is a large section of about 10 varieties of maple trees in Highland Park. T this time of year they are ablaze with color. They can't be seen in one picture. This is only about 1/3rd of them.

February 15th is Flag Day in Canada. On that day we commemorate the inauguration of The Maple Leaf, Canada's national flag, by Governor General Georges Vanier on that date in 1965.
These truly are 'my' maples. I have ten of them here and eight of them I grew from seed ... you know, the ones that spiral to the ground on little helicopter like rotors. I'm serious ... but, before you start wondering, 'Just how the hell old is he?', :-) keep in mind they are really fast growing ... they are actually well under under twenty years old! :-)
Like most everyone who was born here in this province, I first and foremost consider myself a Newfoundlander. That being said, I'm proud to be Canadian and The Maple Leaf, the flag that is, is up 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. When it becomes worn, it's replaced with a new one. To paraphrase a well known commercial: Flagpole - $139.00 at Lee Valley Tools; Flag - Under $20 at the Mall; Maple trees - free; Living here in this province, in this country - priceless.
