…The chiming beauty of a couple of natures simple little wind chimes. Very simple to many, but so beautiful to me. I enjoy the sounds these seedlings make when caught up in the wind, and love to think about natures lifecycle. Fall truly is a beautiful season, and not everything passes away in the glory of autumn. This is my next-door neighbor's gargantuan maple tree, bursting with red buds.
Seems like it was just yesterday when I was mowing the leaves from this tree that blow into my back yard. I don't mind, though. It puts on such an impressive display of autumnness every year, and I enjoy photographing it.

This has been the most beautiful fall! The leaves are bright and so colorful, I saw these two on a maple tree in the yard just holding on and thought it would be a cool shot!
It was such a nice day yesterday and the fall colours are perfect right now. We went for a walk before dinner and I saw a beam of sunlight land on this little maple tree in the bush.

The Maple tree in the front yard is not doing well but is hanging in there. It would seem to be as old as the neighborhood but not as old as the ones along the property line that predate the subdivision. This macro is of some of the lichen on a bit of that bark.
I struggled to find a photo from five years ago today when it was announced at the Faculty Senate meeting that we would have Spring Break the following week, then not come back to campus. The global pandemic of Covid 19 had struck Springfield. Somehow this lichen fits the mood better than any other photo I found.
About 310 km from Scarborough, Algonquin Provincial Park is located between Georgian Bay and the Ottawa River in Central Ontario, mostly within the Unorganized South Part of Nipissing District. Established in 1893, it is the oldest provincial park in Canada. The park is considered part of the "border" between Northern Ontario and Southern Ontario. The park is in an area of transition between coniferous forest and deciduous forest. This unique mixture of forest types, and the wide variety of environments in the park, allows the park to support an uncommon diversity of plant and animal species.

Maple syrup
"Maple syrup production is centered in northeastern North America, and is commonly associated with Quebec in Canada; however, given the correct weather conditions, it can be made wherever maple trees grow. Usually, the maple species used are the sugar maple (Acer saccharum) and the black maple (Acer nigrum), because of a high sugar content in the sap of roughly two percent. A maple syrup production farm is called a "sugar bush" or "the sugarwoods". Sap is often boiled in a "sugar house" (also known as a "sugar shack" or cabane à sucre), a building which is louvered at the top to vent the steam from the boiling sap.
Canada makes more than 80 percent of the world's maple syrup, producing about 26.5 million litres in 2005. The vast majority of this comes from Quebec: the province is by far the world's largest producer, with about 75 percent of the world production (24.66 million litres in 2005).[3] Production in Quebec is controlled through a supply-management system, with producers receiving quota allotments from the Fédération des producteurs acéricoles du Québec. The province also maintains it own "strategic reserves" of maple syrup, which reached its highest point in 2004, when it totalled 60 million pounds, or 17.03 million litres.
The provinces of Ontario, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and British Columbia produce smaller amounts. The province of Manitoba produces maple syrup using the sap of the Manitoba maple tree (Acer negundo, also known as the "box-elder"). Manitoba maple syrup has a slightly different flavor than sugar-maple syrup; because it contains less sugar and the sap flows more slowly, the Manitoba maple tree's yield is usually less than half that of a similar-sized maple tree.
Vermont is the biggest U.S. producer, with 920 thousand US gallons (3,500,000 l) in 2009, followed by Maine with 395 thousand US gallons (1,500,000 l) and New York with 362 thousand US gallons (1,370,000 l). Wisconsin, Ohio, New Hampshire, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and Connecticut all produced marketable quantities of maple syrup of less than 120 thousand US gallons (450,000 l) each in 2009.
Traditionally, maple syrup was harvested by tapping a maple tree through the bark and into the wood, then letting the sap run into a bucket, which required daily collecting; less labour-intensive methods such as the use of continuous plastic pipelines have since superseded this, in all but cottage-scale production.Production is concentrated in February, March, and April, depending on local weather conditions. Freezing nights and warm days are needed to induce sap flows. The change in temperature from above to below freezing causes water uptake from the soil, and temperatures above freezing cause a stem pressure to develop, which, along with gravity, causes sap to flow out of tapholes or other wounds in the stem or branches. To collect the sap, holes are bored into the maple trees and tubes (taps, spouts, spiles) are inserted. Sap flows through the spouts into buckets or into plastic tubing. Modern use of plastic tubing with a partial vacuum has enabled increased production. A hole must be drilled in a new location each year, as the old hole will produce sap for only one season due to the natural healing process of the tree, called walling-off. Walling-off may also occur if the hole is drilled too early in the season, before daytime temperatures are above freezing. Holes also need not be plugged at the end of the season for this same reason.
Maple sap is collected from the buckets and taken to the sugar house; if plastic tubing and pipelines are used, then the pipelines are arranged so that the sap will flow by gravity into the sugar house, or if that is not possible, into holding tanks from which the sap is pumped or transported by tanker truck to the sugar house.
It takes approximately 40 litres (10 gal) of sap to be boiled down to 1 litre (1 quart) of syrup. A mature sugar maple produces about 40 litres of sap during the 4- to 6-week sugaring season. Trees are not tapped until they have a diameter of 25 cm (10 in) at chest-height and the tree is at least 40 years old. If the tree is more than 45 centimetres (18 in) it can be tapped twice on opposite sides. It is recommended that the drilled tap hole have a width of 8 mm (⅓ in) and a depth of 25 to 40 mm (1.0 to 1.6 in). During cooking, the sap is fed automatically by pipe from a storage tank to a long and narrow ridged pan called the evaporator. The evaporator is usually divided into two sections, the front pan and the back pan.
As the sap boils, the water evaporates; it becomes denser and sweeter. As the density of the sap increases, it works its way from the rear of the back evaporator pan to the front evaporator pan. The syrup is boiled until it reaches the correct density of maple syrup, 1333 kg/m3. The proper density of at least 66% sugar is reached when the boiling sap reached a temperature of 219 °F (104 °C). The density is tested with a hydrometer. If the density is too low the syrup will not be sweet enough and the syrup will spoil. If the density is too high the syrup will crystallize in bottles. When the syrup has reached the proper density, it is drawn off, filtered and bottled while hot." wikipedia.org

It's officially fall.Soon the kiddos will be jumping in leaf piles and carving pumpkins for halloween. I like fall, the fresh, cool air and pretty colours - but I will definitely miss summer.

Smoke Tree Flame is a stunning medium sized shrub. The rounded foliage of mid green is highlighted by feathery plumes of silvery white in summer. This spectacular deciduous shrub changes into glowing tones of red and orange as Autumn approaches.
Wandiligong is a town in north-eastern Victoria in the alpine region around 330 kilometres from Melbourne. Established in the 1850s as part of the Victorian Gold Rush, Wandiligong became a hub for many gold miners, including a large Chinese community. At its peak, the town was home to over two thousand inhabitants and boasted shops, churches, a public library, halls and even an hotel. Much has changed since those heady days of the gold rush, and the picturesque town nestled in a valley and built around the Morses Creek, is now a sleepy little town full of picturesque houses which are often let to visitors to the area. The whole town is registered with the National Trust of Australia for its historic landscape and buildings of historic value.

Bright, a town in north-east Victoria, is situated in the Ovens Valley and is part of the Alpine Region of Victoria. 210 kilometres from Melbourne, Bright was one of the towns in the Ovens Valley where gold was discovered. Gold was found near the junction of Morses Creek and the Ovens River in the 1850s. Established in 1862 and named Bright, most likely after John Bright (1811 - 1889) an English publicist, reformer and parliamentarian the township thrived. With the Gold Rush in full swing, Bright soon had Catholic, Wesleyan and Presbyterian churches, schools, three hotels, three quartz mills and two bank branches. As the yield of gold declined in the 1870s, so too did Bright’s population, yet by the 1880s, it became an alpine tourism town. The Bright Alpine club was formed in 1887 and a community library was started there in 1889. In the following year Bright was connected by railway to Myrtleford and Wangaratta, bringing with it much needed tourists from Melbourne. In 1910 a grand chalet was opened at Mount Buffalo and Bright ran a hire car service for visitors, who often stayed there overnight at a hotel or guesthouse. In 1919 a secondary school was opened in Bright. It also had a tourist progress association and local angling, bowling, racing, tennis and golf clubs amongst its many attractions. By the mid 1920s the people of Bright began planting exotic trees partly for landscape improvement and partly to lay the summer dust. The street tree plantings produced extraordinary autumn colours. By 1933, Bright was described as the “Tourism Capital of the Ovens Valley”. Bright’s train line continued until 1983 when it was finally discontinued and replaced with coaches. By that time, it was a well established tourism town with people flocking there all throughout the year for different reasons. Bright is a base for exploring the peaks of Mount Buffalo National Park and Alpine National Park as well as Mount Hotham, a popular ski resort. Bright is a starting point for the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail, a hiking and cycling path. Bright Museum, in the town’s former train station, documents rail and gold rush history. The region is also known for wineries and of course its amazing display of autumnal foliage.
More buds bursting forth on one of our maple trees as the rains were winding down. Taken while still raining a little and the sun just starting to come out. And yes, these will make a mess and fill the rain gutters shortly. :) Some not in sharp focus but saving for now since not much else to photo. More storms and very rain starting tonight for a couple of days. :( A very small tornado hit about 10 miles from us causing only minor damage 1 1/2 hours before these photos, one downside to the beauty of Spring.

This aint no accident, a Fluke of Nature, a result of a Big Bang, Big Bangs blow and burn things up. This is a result of Team Work, thats right Team Work and with a huge amount of creativity and thoughtfullness put into the final result and we know who the Team is. It is a famous Man and Woman duo, and is non other than our Heavenly Father and Mother Nature. And we all know behind every great man is a great woman :) My they do good work :)

A tapped maple tree at my brother's property, where I have been helping with sap collection and cooking this week. I guess spring is here.

Quite a volume of captures made with this arrangement to get something I was pleased with - this one was closest to my vision of what I wanted to do.
