deciduous trees are not very common here- most trees in the mountains are evergreen, so a maple tree with red leaves is sure to attract attention.
I believe this is a Acer opalus, Italian Maple- it is growing in Southern Europe from Italy to Spain. Therre were other trees nearby with yellow leaves.
Trees outside of my apartment - just now reaching their peak colors when most of the surrounding area forest trees are now all bare.
Maple syrup in Michigan.
This was the original sugar shack where they distill the syrup. The shack was built by "Grandpa." It's now abandoned. What appears to be ropes is actually the PVC sap lines that now run through the forest.
Maple snickerdoodle. I used this recipe: allrecipes.com/Recipe/Ultimate-Maple-Snickerdoodles/Detai... only switching out some of the white sugar for brown sugar. Delicious!
I couldn't find maple sugar here--in Canada, of all places! So, I just made my own with "medium" maple syrup: I made some maple sugar candy ( allrecipes.com/Recipe/Maple-Sugar-Cookies/Detail.aspx ) and then left a portion in the pot, heating it up a little bit more and then leaving it to harden and crystallize. Mm-mm.
