The current price at a well known UK health shop for 250g of manuka honey is around £15. So each of these drums is holding in the region of £19,500 of honey. And yes, this is how it arrives in the UK; not in little pots.

A Matapia gecko (Dactylochnemis sp.) on the Aupouri Peninsula, Northland, NZ. Among the famous pink manuka flowers that produce the best quality manuka honey!
This beautiful little species was first identified after diminutive specimens (SVL 45-55mm) were found co-existing with "pacific geckos" on the small and weirdly-shaped Matapia Island off the west coast of the Aupouri Peninsula, in the 1980's.
They are now known to range widely on the Aupouri Peninsula itself, where the animals are larger (SVL around 55-65mm) but usually have the same characteristic striped colour pattern (a tiny portion are instead blotched), spotted belly and dark grey tongue.
They typically spend the day hidden in creviced clay banks, under kanuka bark or in thick vegetation, and forage among scrub and foliage at night.
Matapia geckos are the smallest and most docile species of Dactylocnemis; indeed, rather than physical differences, all three of the species found on the mainland can be more easily distinguished by their temperment, Matapia geckos being very docile and a pleasure to work with photographically; Pacific geckos highly nervous, and Te Paki geckos in between. The Matapia gecko is the only one to be nearly-consistently striped and pale-brown, however, and the other two are far more commonly dark brown or grey with bands or blotches.
From Stony Bay to the Lookout- we finished the last half of the walk by coming in from the other end at Stony Bay a few days later(& in the process missing a very steep climb to the lookout) From start to finish the walk is 7kms but to drive from the start to end it's 56kms on some very winding narrow gravel roads.

The weird thing about looking at this photo, I find, is I don't think it shows just how steep the drop off actually was. I like heights and I got very close to the edge here, a little further and I think I would have lost that love of heights.

This is a real hero. Sailor, engineer, boat designer, boat builder and my big brother. I am deeply fond and proud of Derek.
His mischievous sense of humour, courage, strength and example remind me that any problems and challenges I face are minor.
Look up syringomyelia. Derek appears in case histories as patient #1 - one the first to be successfully treated. Though the genius of the medical team involved can't be denied, his own role in suggesting the solution is completely overlooked.
Couple that with a successful 10-year fight against MRSA , acquired from the local hospital following a hip operation - and eventually cured, of all things, by applying Manuka honey to an open infected wound, then you can understand my pride.
The boat designer thing? In the early days of his recovery, Derek designed and built by hand, the first Somerset Dory to be built and launched from a Somerset slipway for 300 years.
Ingredients + Method

large scoop of ice,
1/2 cup frozen mixed berries,
1/2 cup Jalna a2 yoghurt &

A Canberra school ahtletics carnival, 1965-style. A group of schoolboys relax at Manuka Oval during the carnival, listening to a portable gramophone. Replace it with an iPad or iPhone and you'll have the modern-day version. We wonder what they were listening to in 1965? And which school does that uniform belong to?
