The New Zealand tea tree or 'Manuka, (Leptospermum scoparium) is an upright evergreen shrub that features small, prickly, needle-like leaves, which are aromatic when crushed. In late spring to early summer, the plant produces showy single or double white, pink, or red blossoms that are attractive to bees and other pollinators. In fact, manuka honey, a popular honey for culinary uses and alternative medicine, is produced from the nectar that bees gather from this plant.

During November/December every year on my favourite section of the upper Clutha River these little guys hatch and all climb to the top of the nearest plant. They form vast blankets of shiny little beetles which is truely amazing to see.

They are of particular interest to flyfishers, as the trout gorge themselves on the beetles when they inevitably fall into the water.

Manuka honey is recognised world wide for its healing properties. This is a wild shrubby tree that grows wild and covers unkept areas in a swathe of white blooms in spring. Hybrid varieties in different colours, and flower sizes have been raised and are for sale in garden centres.

A dark and dramatic, gritty noir depiction of St Paul's Anglican Church in Canberra, Australia. The photograph was taken looking east into the pre-dawn light. I was losing the battle against the grain that accompanies low light / high ISO photographs taken with an iPhone camera. So I decided to go with it and add some more grain!

St Paul's Anglican Church has been registered by the the ACT Heritage Council. It was designed by Sydney Architects Burcham Clamp and Son The red brick building, with elements of both Gothic and Art Deco styles, was completed in 1939, just 2 months before the outbreak of WWII.

Due to financial constraints, only part of the design was actually built in 1938/39. The original design, including the prominent octagonal tower, was completed in 1956. Two additional bays, with the same style as the existing structure, were added in 2002 on the southern (righthand) end.

I recently bought a new Marco lens to use for those realy small shots. This is the first time I have used my new Macro 2.8 100 IS L mm lens. So instead of trying it on something small, I tried it out at this sports event to capture some action.

Details of the shot and match below:

From the Stony Bay to the Lookout- we finished the last half of the walk by coming in from the other end at Stony Bay a few days later(& in the process missing a very steep climb to the lookout) From start to finish the walk is 7kms but to drive from the start to end it's 56kms on some very winding narrow gravel roads.

The pinkish bark produces a red sap was used to make red dye and the wood charcoal to make black dye.

The bark, leaves, and flowers of kōlea (Mysine spp.) were used medicinally to treat pāʻaoʻao (childhood disease, with physical weakening) and ʻea (thrush).

Habitat where an adult male southern bush gecko (Woodworthia sp.) was found in manuka (Leptospermum scoparium) shrubland (just right of centre) on Three Sisters Hill. It was found beneath a lone loose rock in an area of a near-monoculture of manuka.

Previously known only from about three small rock outcrops on the hill, the discovery of this specimen in an area of extensive manuka suggests that there may be a much larger population than had at first seemed likely. But it does raise an interesting question about habitat use, as most of the manuka has no suitable retreat sites for this species, the trunks being too slender to have crevices or holes that a gecko could fit into. The much rarer and more strictly arboreal Tautuku and jewelled geckos (neither of which have yet been found here) can get by fine in this situation but it is an unusual situation for the korero. I suspect they may be very sparse in the manuka as a result. More unlikely but still possible, the gecko may have wandered a long way from its usual habitat. Some night searching in warm weather might help clarify the situation, but in the mean time this find does show that manuka shrubland is potentially a viable habitat for this species. Equally intreguing, if this species has survived in this shrubland area, could the rarer Tautuku and jewelled geckos also be hanging on here?!

I since turned up a specimen of Oligosoma chionochloescens (tussock skink) here too.

Oh yes, TGIF!

This week: 5 days; 2 set up day; 6 million review meetings; 3 live events (conference thingies) on site; 2 events off site; 1 day working from home; 2 nights staying with my friend so I don't have to drive late/early and have 2 more hours in my day ... another busy week ...

Today was good though - 2 'conferences' and got to play with my camera. This shot was after the meeting uploading some shots from the day.

Micro pig Manuka with Hector the cat in April 2009.

Jane Croft and her one-year-old micro pig Manuka, Christchurch, Cambridgeshire, Britain - 22 Oct 2010.

They may start out life as pocket-size piggies but micro pigs don't stay mini forever. Meet 'micro pig' Manuka, who lives with animal lover Jane Croft at her home in Christchurch, Cambridgeshire. The not so tiny trotter has had the run of breeder Jane's home ever since she was just a petite porker. Then, when she was just a few weeks and months old, her doggy pal Daisy would tower protectively over the youngster. However, now she has piled on the pounds one-year-old Manuka is more than a match for her canine companion. When they are first born micro pigs are the size of teacups. By the time they are two years old they are fully grown, weighing in at around 40-65 pounds and standing at knee height (12-16 inches). Alongside Manuka and Daisy, Jane's home is also given over to a menagerie of other creatures, including Hector the cat, Badger the puppy and other baby micro pigs..
