At the Kapiti Food Fair with a manuka smoked bacon and egg buttie ($6 and delicious),
I had a fabulous day here. I started with this buttie. Then Margaret, Chrissie and Sharon from the Momentum Meetup group arrived. We watched Annabelle White's cookery demonstration and then wandered around the stalls.
I bought: limoncello, orangecello, lemon cream liqueur;
tamarillo vinegar and kiwifruit vinegar;
three cheesecakes;
feta & spinach dip, pita breads and falafel from a nice man from Egypt and his assistant from Peterborough;
Pete's Natural juice drinks; (a real bargain - 4 for $15 or 8 for $20);
almond butter - I'd never tried it before and it was lovely, not as sticky as peanut butter, I got a chocolate flavour one too;
a couple of bars very nice chocolate, one with sea salt and one with mandarin;
drank a Whitakers hot chocolate;
and, before heading home, some mini pancakes with strawberry coulis topping.
I also tried some of the cinnamon chimney cake that Jae bought;
tasted some lovely quince jam made by the lady who was selling it and her mother from fruit on their own property.

Doughnuts with tamarillo and apple compote filling, manuka honey icing and gingernut crumble; and Whittaker’s Peanut Slab topping with a peanut and chocolate filling inspired by or composed of said slab.
Aotearoa, I’ve loved you a long time (yes really) but your cuisine is one of the hardest to find in London. The national dish is bacon and egg pie (*don’t* think quiche) but not something I could get hold of nor someone to make it for me.
So I waited for Waitangi Day to roll round, on February 6. Turns out it has been celebrated in London by Kiwis with great gusto for many years. But I wasn’t sure I was up for a whacky costume-adorned pub crawl – a wonderful hoot though it would have been.
When I spent a month there in 1989, I think I lived almost exclusively on meat pies in cellophane packets and hokey pokey ice cream (butterscotch brickle). But my dietary standards have improved since then, well marginally...
...therefore what we have here are two very NZ-themed doughnuts – both sold as a limited edition around Waitangi Day. And not a kiwi fruit in sight (I can’t abide by them).
Accompanied by a flat white of course, which NZ can arguably lay claim to along with my country of origin. Let’s not even get started with pavlova. I’m unusually neutral on Oz-NZ rivalry, having a strong family connection to both countries.
Tamarillos are a bit like red-skinned passionfruit to my mind. They were adopted (from South America), further developed and named in NZ (with maybe the only instance of a Māori-Spanish word). Whittaker’s Peanut slab is not something I remember, but clearly part of a nostalgic national confection roster – which almost every country seems to have. Anyway they were delicious — of course they were.
Why doughnuts? Well the London-based Kiwi chef Peter Gordon is involved with the doughnut business.

Thanks Celeste, I keep this as "Manuka flower (New Zealand)", till someone correct us :-)
I, however, feel you are right, this resembles Manuka flowers very much.

The New Zealand tea tree or 'Manuka, (Leptospermum scoparium) is an upright evergreen shrub that features small, prickly, needle-like leaves, which are aromatic when crushed. In late spring to early summer, the plant produces showy single or double white, pink, or red blossoms that are attractive to bees and other pollinators. In fact, manuka honey, a popular honey for culinary uses and alternative medicine, is produced from the nectar that bees gather from this plant.
