Steam valve and manometer

A precursor of the VEB Schwerarmaturenwerk "Erich Weinert" Magdeburg or

VEB Messgerätewerk "Erich Weinert".

The full history of the firm may be read here. Founded in 1850, it was based on the patent for a Manometer registered by Bernhard Schäffer, followed by joining in partnership with his brother-in-law Christian Friedrich Budenberg. The firm specialised in steam boilers and valves. At its peak S&B employed 7000 people, nearly half of which were active in Buckau, Magdeburg. It survived as the same company until 1945 when it became first a Soviet AG, Pribor, then Transmasch, followed in 1951 by renaming to VEB Messgeräte und Armaturenwerk "Karl Marx" , which was amalgamated with the Polte Werke in 1960 to become VEB Armaturenwerke "Karl Marx", which in turn divested in 1965 the Gauge making part to VEB Messgerätewerk "Erich Weinert" . In 1989 the firm was privatised becoming Messgerätewerk GmbH, which eventually became bankrup in 1994. Since 2009, the firm, Messma-Projektgesellschaft mbH & Co.KG has been developing the site for housing or work space.

An example of their workmanship may be seen in the Berlin Friedrichshagen Water pumping works. A branch of the family set up business in Manchester in the 19th century.

During joint UK-Belarus training we had a cultural visit to the Brest Railway Museum. Unfortunately I'm not a train buff, so didn't record any details of equipment, just enjoyed walking around it, made a change from guns and tanks!

The museum is very well maintained, by private individuals with no state funding.

Engineering student Hannah Davis adjusts equipment inside a pipe. “We're studying how pressure drops over a bend,” explains her lab mate Jesse Ware '18, manning the manometer near the middle of the pipe. They’re part of a four-student team in Mechanical Engineering 123, Thermo-Fluid Lab.

Dordt in Stoom is the largest steam festival in Europe. It is held every two years at Dordrecht, the Netherlands. Ships, trains, rollers, tractors, machines, all powered by steam and a variety of other old stuff.

Three fans, can't reach fifty in an 11,000 square foot building.

Some weird hardware in one of the workshops. The lever is connected via pivots and cardan joints to some valve or something furhter up (where you would struggle to reach) - and another pressure gauge... can't have to many of them :)
