Managing Forced Displacement in Africa
How Collective Efforts Can More Effectively Address the Surge of Refugees and Displaced Persons
Africa hosts more than one-third of the world’s refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs)—many of whom are fleeing ongoing conflicts in Somalia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Sudan, Sudan, and the Central African Republic. This growing phenomenon impacts not only those fleeing conflict, but also the host communities and countries who now face complex logistical and humanitarian challenges. A comprehensive response to this problem must seek to address root causes, thereby preventing further displacement, and also find durable solutions for the many millions already displaced.
Human migration is a natural, constant process and contributes to the development of cultures and economies. But when displacement is forced—whether by violent conflict, poor governance, or environmental factors such as natural disasters or drought—the displaced often find themselves traumatized and vulnerable to physical and economic insecurity. And for those who live in refugee camps and host communities, the conditions are as diverse as the issues that drive displacement. That’s why, in acknowledgement of both the challenges of displacement and the leadership roles played by African countries that host refugees, the African Union has named 2019 the year of refugees, IDPs and returnees.
The U.S. Institute of Peace, the African Diplomatic Corps, and the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars hosted a discussion on forced displacement in Africa. The panel conversation highlighted African policy responses to displacement at the national, regional, and continental level, discuss current and anticipated challenges, and brainstorm innovative approaches. January 24, 2012 - "A Regulatory Framework for Managing Systemic Risk" - Steven L. Schwarcz presented a Risk Regulation Seminar about the systemic risk in the financial sector and how current approaches to regulating financial risk are insufficient. Schwarcz suggested that a new analytical framework could be established in order to help internalize risk within financial institutions themselves to as to minimize external risk that might affect multiple institutions within the economy. This might involve firms paying into a 'systemic risk fund' that would help firms to be able to recover from financial failures. Schwarcz is a Stanley A. Star Professor of Law and Business at Duke University.

In September of 2022 we finally managed to get up to the north east of England again to visit this idyllic part of the coastline. We stayed in a small village to the south-west of Saltburn-by-the-Sea and ventured for a few hours down to the classic fishing village of Staithes.
Staithes is a seaside village in North Yorkshire, England. Easington and Roxby Becks, two brooks that run into Staithes Beck, form the border between the unitary authorities of North Yorkshire and Redcar and Cleveland. The area located on the Redcar and Cleveland side is called Cowbar.
Staithes is a gorgeous fishing village with a cosy harbour, a great location for geologist and fossil hunters and perhaps most famously, the home of a community of well-known artists.
The pictures in this album are of the town and the harbourside and, I hope, give my millions of flickr friends around the world and opportunity to see just how photogenic it is!
Staithes isn’t full of airs and graces. To use what is now an old cliched phrase, “What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get”! But I do hope those who take the time to look at this quaint part of England get some pleasure from seeing its rawness and charm!

On Day 2 of the Managing Directors' Mr Thierno-Habib Hann, CFA official Mission to Nigeria, we had working sessions with our partners from The Real Estate Developers of Nigeria (REDAN), Family Home Funds and Modern Shelter. We also met with the Management of the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Fund (NSIA), as well as the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria; Mrs. Aisha Ahmad
The day was capped by a private audience with the Honourable Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, who reaffirmed Nigeria's firm commitment to Shelter-Afrique as one of the largest shareholders.
