Avoiding World War III: Managing Threats from Russia, China, and AI

Managed to sneak in another batch from Toledo before we leave Granada and free internet. Lots from Crista de la Luz, which is a neat Muslim mosque later converted to a church (as happened to many mosques after the reconquest).

Managed to snap this shot in a small speedboat with an impatient driver. Don't know how, but glad I did.

Managed to obtain a photographer's pass to see an intimate gig. Another band performed first, then three members of Wet Wet Wet (including songwriter Graeme Clark) performed a selection of new and old songs.

Barcelona - Bayern Munich UEFA Quarter Final Match at Camp Nou, Barcelona.

Managed to stop off in Gigrin Farm a couple of weeks ago on my way back from a short holiday. I have been once before, back in May last year, so thought January would be good time to have a go again!! Managed 15 minutes of sunshine before the cloud rolled in, but having driven through a huge belt of rain to get there I was very chuffed. Had a cracking day.

The Art Stations along Line 1 of the underground in Naples, managed by ANM, are the result of a project by the municipal administration in Naples. They have inaugurated a new way of devising transit areas which combines architecture and art.

The main purpose of the Art Stations is to preserve the crucial points of the urban transportation’s network from the anonymity and the homogeneity that usually characterizes stations, airports, highways.

The architectures were designed by internationally famous designers such as Àlvaro Siza, Eduardo Souto de Moura, Dominique Perrault, Oscar Tusquets, Karim Rashid, Gae Aulenti, Alessandro Mendini.

Each station has its own stylistic features and was designed specifically for the area it would serve. The designers were also assigned the task of redesigning the surrounding street system and furniture, bringing to new life areas previously abandoned and so doing a strong social requalification and aesthetic rehabilitation were brought about in large areas of the urban fabric.

At the same time, under the artistic coordination by Achille Bonito Oliva, more than 250 works of art by 80 protagonists of contemporary art have been placed inside and outside the stations. There are site-specific paintings, sculptures, mosaics, ceramics, photographs and installations directly commissioned to internationally famous artists.

This strategy aims to improve citizen’s quality of life, not only in physical but also in moral and intellectual terms, and to make the use of public transportation a more attractive experience.

Managing Forced Displacement in Africa

How Collective Efforts Can More Effectively Address the Surge of Refugees and Displaced Persons

Africa hosts more than one-third of the world’s refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs)—many of whom are fleeing ongoing conflicts in Somalia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Sudan, Sudan, and the Central African Republic. This growing phenomenon impacts not only those fleeing conflict, but also the host communities and countries who now face complex logistical and humanitarian challenges. A comprehensive response to this problem must seek to address root causes, thereby preventing further displacement, and also find durable solutions for the many millions already displaced.

Human migration is a natural, constant process and contributes to the development of cultures and economies. But when displacement is forced—whether by violent conflict, poor governance, or environmental factors such as natural disasters or drought—the displaced often find themselves traumatized and vulnerable to physical and economic insecurity. And for those who live in refugee camps and host communities, the conditions are as diverse as the issues that drive displacement. That’s why, in acknowledgement of both the challenges of displacement and the leadership roles played by African countries that host refugees, the African Union has named 2019 the year of refugees, IDPs and returnees.

The U.S. Institute of Peace, the African Diplomatic Corps, and the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars hosted a discussion on forced displacement in Africa. The panel conversation highlighted African policy responses to displacement at the national, regional, and continental level, discuss current and anticipated challenges, and brainstorm innovative approaches. Managing Water and Land Resources for Sustainable Livelihoods at the Interface between Fresh and Saline Water Environments in Vietnam and Bangladesh

The project had five specific objectives:

1.To enhance their understanding of livelihood changes resulting from regional resources management and farm-level technological interventions.

2.

To assess the impacts of agricultural and aquacultural land and water uses on water quality, aquatic biodiversity, and inland fisheries.

3.

To develop ecologically friendly and socially acceptable techniques for rice and rice-aquaculture production systems.

4.

To develop decision-support tools and an institutional framework for integrated multipurpose management of a dual fresh- and brackish-water regime to meet the needs of diverse water users, without an adverse impact on users and the environment outside.

5.

To enhance human resources capacity and develop recommendations for resources management at the farm and regional level.

This rare bird I managed to capture a few shots by shear luck. I was at Springbank Park, London, this afternoon and was heading back to the bus stop. I was walking along the riverside path and low and behold there was mister duck. I had been up and down the river a couple of times between the entrance and the pump house. On my final walk along the river I was rewarded.
