Painshill (also referred to as "Pains Hill" in some 19th-century texts[1]), near Cobham, Surrey, England, is one of the finest remaining examples of an 18th-century English landscape park. It was designed and created between 1738 and 1773 by Charles Hamilton. The original house built in the park by Hamilton has since been demolished.

Painshill is owned by Elmbridge Borough Council and managed by the Painshill Trust. Painshill, which is open to the public (with entry charge), is Grade I listed on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens.[2] In 1998 Painshill was awarded the Europa Nostra Medal for the "Exemplary restoration from a state of extreme neglect, of a most important 18th-century landscape park and its extraordinary buildings."[3][4] In May 2006, Painshill was awarded full collection status for its John Bartram Heritage Collection, by the National Council for the Conservation of Plants and Gardens (NCCPG).[5]

History

Charles Hamilton was born in 1704 in Dublin, the 9th son and 14th child of James Hamilton, 6th Earl of Abercorn. He was educated at Westminster School and Oxford, and went on two Grand Tours, one in 1725 and a further one in 1732.

In 1738 Hamilton began to acquire land at Painshill and, over the years, built up a holding of more than 200 acres (81 ha). His creation was among the earliest to reflect the changing fashion in garden design prompted by the Landscape Movement, which started in England in about 1730. Hamilton used what today are called organic gardening and organic lawn management techniques.[6] It represented the move away from geometric formality in garden design to a new naturalistic formula. Many of the trees and shrubs planted by Hamilton were sent to him from Philadelphia by the naturalist John Bartram. The garden was open to respectable visitors, who were shown round by the head gardener for a tip, and was visited by many well-known figures including two visits by William Gilpin, pioneer of the Picturesque, Thomas Jefferson with John Adams, and Prince Franz of Anhalt-Dessau separately, on special tours of gardens,[7] and the important landscape garden author Thomas Whately. Then as now, there was a particular route round the park recommended, designed to bring the visitor upon the successive views with best effect. Views from Painshill were painted on some pieces of the Frog Service commissioned by Catherine the Great of Russia from Wedgwood.[8]

Hamilton eventually ran out of money and sold the estate in 1773 to Benjamin Bond Hopkins,[9] who held the estate until his death in 1794.[10] In 1778 Hopkins commissioned architect Richard Jupp to rebuild Painshill House in a different place within the park. The house was later extended in the 19th century by architect Decimus Burton and is now a grade II* listed building.[11]

Henry Luttrell, 2nd Earl of Carhampton (7 August 1743 – 25 April 1821) bought Painshill in 1807 from William Moffat. Luttrell lived at Painshill having fled from the ancestral Luttrellstown Castle near Clonsilla outside Dublin, where his role in crushing the Irish Rebellion in 1798 made it unsafe to stay. (His ancestor Colonel Henry Luttrell had been assassinated in Dublin in 1717 for betraying the Irish to King William III of England.) After his death in 1821, Luttrell's wife Jane lived at Painshill until her death in 1831 when it was sold it to Sir William Cooper, High sheriff of Surrey.

Sir William Cooper and his wife, later his widow, lived there until 1863, and installed Joseph Bramah's suspension bridge and water wheel, and planted an arboretum designed by John Claudius Loudon. In 1873, the English poet, literary and social critic, Matthew Arnold, rented Pains Hill Cottage from Mr. Charles J. Leaf and lived there until his death in 1888.[12] In 1904 Charles Combe of Cobham Park purchased and lived in Painshill Park, his son having moved into Cobham Park.

Until World War II Painshill Park was held by a succession of private owners. In 1948 the estate was split up and sold in separate lots for commercial uses. The Park's features fell into decay.

By 1980 the local authority, Elmbridge Borough Council, had bought 158 acres (64 ha) of Hamilton's original estate and the work of restoring the landscape garden and its many features could start. In the following year, the Painshill Park Trust was founded as a registered charity with the remit "to restore Painshill as nearly as possible to Charles Hamilton's Original Concept of a Landscaped Garden for the benefit of the public."[13] There is a wealth of 18th-century images of the main features of Painshill to help the process.

The restoration of this Grade I continued, in 2013 work was completed on the restoration of the Crystal Grotto, further restoration work in the park is dependent on the availability of funding. The park now borders the A3 road, which allows easy access....Wikipedia

The quality of the Cape Queen Elizabeth track is an interesting one, it changes so regularly from 4x4 trails at the start, to beach tracks and skree slopes.

I suppose in the past I hadn't put thought to it, but compared with the monoculture of steps along the classic Inca Trail it was a welcome relief to the knees!

As cyber attacks become more frequent and more damaging, the cost of not being prepared is rising and companies are considering how to mitigate risk. The insurance industry can play an important role in managing cyber risk, but it needs to better understand the threat and quantify the potential damages. Understanding the range and diversity of cyber threats facing American companies, and the cost of cyber attacks and data breaches to victim companies, is essential for insurers to offer new products and services and manage their own exposure to cyber risk.

CSIS will convene a wide range of stakeholders including industry executives, senior policymakers, and security experts to discuss these issues and promote the development of a common understanding of the cyber risks to American companies and how best to manage those risks.

The CSIS Energy and National Security Program is pleased to host a roundtable discussion of the implications of emerging market demand for the near and longer term global energy outlook. Joyce Chang, Managing Director and Global Head of Research at J.P. Morgan Chase & Co., will discuss the headwinds and tailwinds facing large emerging markets – especially China – and the implications for global energy demand. Though many commentators expected non-OECD oil demand growth to compensate for flat OECD demand, China’s recent economic slowdown is throwing such predictions into doubt, raising serious questions about for exporters about the security of demand. Chang will examine the drivers of oil demand in China and other emerging markets, and discuss how slowing economic activity may impact that demand. Should non-OECD demand growth fail to materialize and OECD demand remain flat, exporters will need to adjust their strategies to cope with an overabundance of supply. Daniel Ahn, Senior Advisor to the Chief Economist at the U.S. State Department, will address the implications of persistent low demand for exporter strategy. Catherine Wolfram, Faculty Director at the Energy Institute at Berkeley’s Haas School of Business, will discuss recent debates about whether or not oil demand growth is decoupling from GDP growth across non-OECD countries. Sarah Ladislaw, Director and Senior Fellow with the CSIS Energy and National Security Program will moderate.

CEA recently managed the unloading, transportation and storage of 13 Komatsu 830 E Ultra Class Haul Trucks. The trucks from Indonesia will be stored by CEA in Thailand.

Each truck weighs 164 Tonnes and has a carrying capacity of 200 Tonnes, compared to a traditional transmission/differential drive the Komatsu’s use an electric drive system instead that can provide 2,400 HP.

The 13 trucks arrived on the Vessel HR Recommendation at Laem Chabang Port, Terminal C0, C0 was the chosen terminal due to its proximity to the CEA Free Trade Zone facility which is less than 1km away. The trucks were lifted form the vessel and lowered onto an awaiting 24 axle Combination SPMT, CEA teams secured the truck in place on the trailer ready for the short transportation across the port.

During transportation each truck was shadowed by a CEA Escort vehicle until arrival at the Free Trade Zone. A specialised reinforced ramp was constructed at the CEA Facility that facilitated the unloading from the SPMT Trailer. Each truck was driven under its own power down the ramp and continued on to the assigned storage location.

All 13 trucks were processed well within the three day timeframe and under budget, both CEA and the client were very happy with the execution of the project

The EBRD manages the Ignalina International Decommissioning Support Fund (IIDSF) which supports the development and implementation of key decommissioning and energy sector projects in Lithuania. To assist Lithuania with the decommissioning process, the European Commission together with 14 European governments set up the Ignalina International Decommissioning Support Fund (IIDSF) at the EBRD in 2001.

Lithuania had one nuclear power plant with two units at Ignalina. Both units were Soviet-designed RBMK 1500 reactors.

As part of the EU accession process, Lithuania agreed to the early closure of its reactors: Ignalina unit 1 was shut down at the end of 2004 and unit 2 at the end of 2009.

Dismantling works began in 2010 including mechanical and thermal cutting to reduce secondary waste, to optimise radiation protection.

To date 20% of the total equipment has been dismantled by INPP’s retained personnel. The plant’s preexisting personnel were retained to help in the decommissioning works.

17,000 RBMK spent nuclear fuel rods will be removed from the old Units, secured, and transported 2 kilometers to the newly built Interim Spent Fuel Storage Facility.

Construction works at the interim spent fuel storage facility and the solid radioactive waste management facility are complete. The spent fuel storage facility started operating in October 2016 and the radioactive waste facility is expected to be operational in 2017.

Safe storage of spent fuel and the ability to safely handle and store radioactive waste produced during dismantling works, are key prerequisites for future decommissioning activities.

Rebuilding of Lithuania’s Energy Sector

The IIDSF has financed energy sector development projects which are an integral part of the closure of the Ignalina plant.

The control room for Lithuania’s energy sector manages the export of electricity supply to neighboring European countries.

With the decommissioning of Ignalina, Lithuania went from being a net exporter to a net importer of energy. IIDSF helped fund upgrades to plants such as the Elektrenai Power Plant to help fill the supply deficit.
