The Great Leader's portrait appears in the vintage faux leather hardcover "Juche Art." Stage-managing the Mad magazine slogan beneath Him makes this a no-no pic in the DPRK (heh heh) and a no-no pic in Seoul (no DPRK materials allowed). Only in the imperalist aggressor US is this a legal picture. ;-)

Managed to whip these out of the apartment before the latest guests' kids saw them. #breasts #penis #taschen #book

Finally, I managed to open the box of my new Nikon D700 (which arrived a few days ago but I was just so busy that I never had a chance to open the box!).

As such, the first thing I had to do was to try out its high-iso capability (afterall, that was why I bought this camera). Went out for a quick photo-walk around the block at my work place and saw this very subtle "protest" sign at the corner of Robson and Cardero. I just had to have a picture of this.

Also, the condition back then was VERY dark. In fact, this looks like daylight when compared to the actual conditions. Also, I wasn't using any flash. I'm truly finding that the D700 almost "sucks" light in! Quite impressed with its high iso capability now.

Hope you like my picture of the day as much as I do.

ps - This was taken with ISO 6400.

pps - For those of you not in North America and specifically not in Canada, the Tar Sands is located primarily in Alberta and the way oil is stored in these "tar sands", it requires a different way of extracting it (for petroleum purposes) which is a lot costlier than the traditional way of drilling and more disturbingly, with a MUCH higher environmental impact.

I managed to spend some time today in the park, just taking in the glorious sunshine and reading a book. I took my camera because I knew I would find something that interested me. However, it was more of a feeling about the unique feeling that you get from just chilling out in a park that caught my attention.

Anyone in London this weekend will tell you that a day like today just had to be spent in the park and was quite special for this time of the year. I tried to capture the autumnal leaves and the rich green and blues to pull it all together.

This is actually a 3 shot HDR as the "original single shot" was looking too dull to convey the colours correctly. As always, I have gone with a very subtle HDR process.

I managed to complete round 51 of the All New Scavenger Hunt.

Mannequin, vanishing point, leaping, hook, nature taking over, non-cube die.

Souvenir, favorite place, first thing in the morning, public restroom, seasonal dress, obsolete.

Someone in uniform, 50/50, shooting blind, push-pull, heart and stroke awareness, two-legged.

A knife, fork and spoon; tree house; peCAN; CANoe; intoxiCANts; CANtilevered.

Managed to find a quiet passageway at Goodge Street (as far as I remember!) underground station. I blended 3 shots for this HDR.

"Brompton Cemetery is a London cemetery in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. It is managed by The Royal Parks, and is one of the Magnificent Seven cemeteries. Established by Act of Parliament and erected in 1839, it opened in 1840 and was originally known as the West of London and Westminster Cemetery.

"Consecrated by Charles James Blomfield, the Bishop of London in June 1840, it is one of Britain's oldest and most distinguished garden cemeteries. Some 35,000 monuments, from simple headstones to substantial mausolea, mark the resting place of more than 205,000 burials. The site includes large plots for family mausolea, and common graves where coffins are piled deep into the earth, as well as a small columbarium. There is also a secluded Garden of Remembrance at the northern end, for cremated remains. It is also an urban haven for nature.

"By the early years of the 19th century, inner city burial grounds, mostly churchyards, had long been unable to cope with the number of burials and were seen as a hazard to health and an undignified way to treat the dead. In 1837 a decision was made to lay out a new burial ground in Brompton, London. The moving spirit behind the project was the engineer, Stephen Geary, and it was necessary to form a company in order to get parliamentary permission to raise capital for the purpose. Securing the land – some 40 acres – from local landowner, Lord Kensington and the Equitable Gas Light Company, as well as raising the money proved an extended challenge. The cemetery became one of seven large, new cemeteries founded by private companies in the mid-19th century (sometimes called the 'Magnificent Seven') forming a ring around the edge of London."

Managed to finally finish four in progress headbands. Most are too big for Maya since they're meant for the bigger girls.

Maya also tried on Cookies wig for size and I think she looks cute with it :)

Managed to catch this photo at range. Took 3 shots with the camera on burst mode. This is from about 15 feet away and the pressure from the shot is still pretty strong!

I'm cross because I didn't manage to get the scale of these shoes - the turquoise ones are Merri's first Crocs and they are incredibly dinky. She loves them.

The question was, WILL these fit their feet? (They do). WILL the fine weather last (GOKs?). WILL we get to Legoland at the weekend (Yes, Matt found some diesel. Phew!).

WILL for the March Scavenger Hunt.

ps Matt just surprised me with lovely carbonara and a mini bottle of our wedding Champagne as a late birthday surprise. Much love!

I manages to dodge the showers for my morning and afternoon walks with Bonny. I also took a ride around the 3 mile circuit now that the bike is more or less ready for some action. I hadn't ridden this far in probably 15 years and certainly not since we moved here - it's too hilly! Still, I braved it and got round without getting off, so that's a good start.

I spotted these cow parsley seed heads on my way round this afternoon. I'd never really noticed them before.

I like this one; I managed to get the silhouette of Mt. Barney in, which I thought was a nice touch.

It was exciting to see a family of three of these threatened birds feeding in the adjacent farmland to the national park, where we stayed. Photos like these are valuable because it shows that the trees here are used by the birds, and therefore must be conserved. They are one of very few, if not the only tree the Glossy's feed on, and the tiny seeds mean that the Cockatoos have to stay in one clump of trees that they know to have adequate seed supply. So if this single clump is lopped, then the Glossy's have to fly distances that the seed simply don't give them the energy for, often leading to their death. It's tragic to see how easily we've threatened them.

In 2015-16, the Standing Panel on Impact Assessment commissioned a set of studies to document the adoption and impact of five well-recognized natural resource practices that were developed, adapted, and promoted by CGIAR centers, research programs and its partners. The practices—conservation agriculture, fertilizer tree systems, alternate wetting and drying (AWD), integrated soil fertility management (ISFM), and micro-dosing of fertilizer—were all expected to enjoy large-scale acceptance among smallholder farmers where they were promoted in South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Sub-Saharan Africa. Results have landed and they are sobering. The low adoption rates reported by these studies provide an important reality check on the returns to some natural resources management (NRM) research investments, and suggests the need to rethink the impact pathways through which NRM research is expected to contribute to sustainable development outcomes—outcomes that nonetheless depend acutely on changes in the way we manage scarce natural resources.

This policy seminar provides insights from economics, integrated landscape strategies, and geospatial analytics to recommend ways forward for NRM research that most effectively contribute to the development of sustainable production systems, while also highlighting innovative methods and tools to evaluate adoption and impact more precisely.
