The New York Historical Society took their art collection to the streets in the public art installation entitled Making History Matter. Replica portraits of Abraham Lincoln and Peter Cooper were strategically positioned in the Astor Place Triangle to celebrate New York’s 400th anniversary as well as the life and accomplishments of the two men. Cooper established the venerable Cooper Union College, located adjacent to the installation, and Lincoln delivered an important presidential campaign speech at the same location.

I landed trackside at Fairview Ave a little after noon (Free parking!); quite frankly I’d have preferred to go just about anywhere else, but it won out simply because the depot would be a decent subject if nothing was running. As it turned out that was something I didn’t have to worry about, walking up to the tracks I found green signals in both directions along with a headlight to the west. I’d gotten a heads up from a friend out in Sandwich that an inbound unit coal with an ACe trailing was on the way, could this be my train? It seemed doubtful, I’d gotten the call about an hour earlier, and while it’s possible for a train to get to Downers in an hour, two has been the norm as of late. Bingo, it was my train, and if I’d been just a few minutes late I’d have missed it! I’d carefully planned out my shots, with only 4.1 megs of resolution to play with I wanted captures that worked with a minimum of cropping.

A "top-worker" of the quarry. He is preparing with a hydraulic press the rough paving stones that a colleague will refine with hammer and chisel.
Both are working in a team together and produce several cubic meters of stones each day. They are paid by the quantity (they have to make a given quantity per day so the length of the day will change according to their speed). Usually their salaries are about 6'000Sfr.
