My family decided to see just how much togetherness we could stand, so we took a three week vacation in June. We drove from the eastern edge of Texas to southern California, took a side trip to northern Nevada, went back to California, and finally drove back home to Texas. It was an adventure, for sure.
We planned our route to visit as many county courthouses as possible along the way.
Evidence of human habitation in the region that became Cochise County, Arizona dates back as early as 300 BCE. The first Europeans to arrive were said to be Spanish explorers who survived a shipwreck off the coast of Texas in 1582, were taken captive by Native Americans, and eventually found their way to Mexico via the San Pedro Valley. Other Spanish explorers and eventually missionaries arrived in the area. The 1853 Gadson Purchase (also known as the Treaty of Mesilla) opened the are to American settlers.
Cochise County was officially created on February 1, 1881 from the eastern portion of Pima County, and named after the Chiricahua Apache war chief Cochise. It is the only county in the state named after an individual Native American person.
In 1877 a party of cavalry was sent in search of renegade Apaches in the Muleshoe Mountains. One of the civilian scouts found signs indicating the presence of lead, copper and possibly silver in the area. The town of Bisbee was founded in 1880, and named for Judge DeWitt Bisbee, one of the financial backers of the nearby Copper Queen Mine. In 1929, the county seat was moved from Tombstone to Bisbee.
Seated on a hillside above the main business district, the 1931 Art Deco Courthouse in Bisbee is the county's second. The building features carvings of miners above the main entrance, and stylized motifs of native desert flora. The grounds feature a large fountain.
After leaving the courthouse, we continued up Tombstone Canyon until it tied in with AZ 80.
