Following on from my itsy bitsy Monument Valley, I decided to make a handheld version of Delicate Arch. It's four inches wide, laser engraved, and assembled from four layers of cherry veneer plywood.
This represents probably upwards of fifteen hours fiddling around in Inkscape getting the little details just so. It started with photos of the arch, traced for shape. After that was a lot of manually filling in the lines and details in such a way they would look decent coming out of the laser cutter, and then a lot of iteration to get the physical product to look something like what I wanted. Sure, I could have just plopped a photo down and let some image processing software do the work, but where's the fun in that?

In the 1990s I used to have to make regular visits to a bank (a branch of Bank of Scotland) in Cockspur Street, near Trafalgar Square. I never minded if there was a wait because it gave time to take in the finely detailed interior décor, presumably from the early 20th century.
In time, the branch closed and stood empty for a number of years: whenever I passed it I'd look through the grimy windows, wondering if I'd ever have another chance to see inside.
In September 2017, such an opportunity presented itself when I saw the door open and a sign announcing a display of Brazilian art and design.
It was great to once again see (and this time photograph) some of the painted plaster panels, and also see some of the current day art being exhibited.
Apparently, the building has been taken over now by the Brazilian Embassy, hence the Brazil connection. I learned too the reason why many of the painted panels were travel-related: the building had originally been a booking office for P&O, as evidenced by their logo being featured here and there.
Artists with works in the exhibition included Luiz Miranda and his daughter Julia Miranda, and Gisela Bentes Simas.

Erin's new ride - a 2009 Subaru Forester 2.5 X Premium with Manual Transmission in Newport Blue. Its got a huge sunroof (or is it convertible) top. We've had our eye on these since the auto show earlier this year and waited until our lease was up to pull the trigger. It'll be nice to have AWD again.

Once again the Bay Area LEGO Users' Group had a large 2000 square foot exhibit at Maker Faire Bay Area in San Mateo, CA.
Landon Donovan and the LA Galaxy helped make a wish come true for Brendan, a 7-year-old boy from Lakewood, Colo., which was featured in ESPN’s SportsCenter 2011 "My Wish" series. Brendan, who was diagnosed with acute myeloctic leukemia, met the 11-time MLS All-Star and had a two-day wish experience hosted by Donovan and the LA Galaxy at The Home Depot Center.
