When you grow you own strawberries they’re so much better than what you get at the store, you don’t want to overpower them with too much sugar. I make homemade shortcake with real butter, whole grain flour, crystallized ginger and just a small amount of sugar. This lets the sweetness and flavor of homegrown sun ripened strawberries be the star of the meal. The shortcakes are cooked until crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. When cooled we crumble them in a bowl, top with strawberries macerated with maple syrup and a dash of vanilla. Then we top it all off with some raw milk.

The Sponge Bob candle is sitting in a bed of "sand' that is made from vanilla cake crumbs.

Pretty darn good on a hot hot day

I found a recipe online last week for cupcakes for two. I thought it was just too perfect for me, since I have been in a big baking kick, but am the only one eating my goodies pretty much. So, I tried it out tonight. The recipe was just for vanilla cupcakes, but I added some sprinkles to make them funfetti. It was the first time I had made cupcakes from scratch, and they were delicious. The frosting was made from scratch too, and together it was the perfect little treat.

I gave one to my roommate and she took a bite before I could get a picture, but, I am glad she did!

A 8" cupcake with a gingerbread man and the initial "G"

The tiara was hand made from fondant and gumpaste with the babies name piped in royal icing.

This cake was all hand decorated. After covering the cake in white fondant, it was quilted and then the accents were put on. The chain was made of individual loops all hand painted with silver luster.

Yes, this day was very inspiring! I remember it was both fun and educational. Oh, you should see pictures we took during our creativity...

So, our dining table is covered with (from the left to the right):

macaroon roses, sesame sticks & pretzels, and sugar cookies.

Samac, Bosnia

This two tiered ombre luau themed cake was the top of a cupcake tower with matching cupcakes.

Hand sculpted and painted fondant teapot, teacups and saucers.

The cake is iced in vanilla buttercream, decorated with fondant zebra stripes and fondant bands and bow.

Wildlife woodland themed 1st birthday cake. All of the animals are sculpted from fondant.

Gingerbread, holly, snowflakes and flowers are cute decorations for any winter party.

Musk Lavender Patchouli Handmade Natural Soap

This brick and purple polka dotted soap is made with musk fragrance oil, lavender essential oil and patchouli essential oil. The dark brick red color is musk, so the scent is mainly musk, but the lavender patchouli dots come through very nicely to give this a well rounded scent. I've inriched this bar with avocado butter, jojoba oil and sweet almond oil for extra moisturizing goodness.

The ducks were real rubber ducks but all other decor was made from fondant or buttercream.

Stefano took this picture; I think it's so beautifulllllll. Probably some of the softest yarns I've worked with (angora and cashmere) and they're recycled as always!

This 10" round cake was 2 layers of vanilla cake with a middle layer of chocolate cake, filled with vanilla buttercream. The filling was done in a rainbow of colors, a fun effect for a birthday party.

Lots going on with this cake. Zebra stripes, a bow, curls and stuff sticking out of the sides. It was a fun and different Sweet 16 cake.

What do you do when you accidentally over bake rolls and they are too dry? You bake them up into a delicious custardy bread pudding. Also a great use for some of that extra cranberry relish left over from Thanksgiving. It was so good I may "accidentally" over bake rolls again. I used the recipe from The River Cottage Cookbook (I used half the amount of sugar)

I grew up in a Colombia and the long, slow cooking of meat over fire was a part of almost every celebration. I grew to love the taste and always equated it with happiness and celebration.

recipe in nigella lawson's "How to Eat" - i so love her.

Light green swirls cover the sides and top of this 1/4 sheet cake with purple flowers as accents.

This cake was actually 2 cakes that you could pull apart at the seam. The father and son birthday cake had their names on the side with the age in the "eye". The cake was covered in fondant.

Both Stu and I are watching our Carbs so today I made a Cauliflower Crust Pizza with tons of toppings. I found a fairly easy recipe that didn't require squeezing the cauliflower out. I made this totally from scratch! Stu said "This is really good!" I had to agree "if I do say so myself!"

This is the second batch of cookies I've made without any recipe!

They rose a little higher than I wanted, but I know what I should have done. (bit more butter, should have halved the egg)

They're basic chocolate chip cookies, but with almond extract instead of vanilla, chocolate flakes & chunks instead of chips, and fluffier than the norm.

Baked last night.

Baking, science in the kitchen.

Buttercream clouds and fondant butterflies adorn this fun girly birthday cake for a little girl named Sunny.

Since we can't copy trademarked characters, we made up our own! These Super Hero cupcakes have hero's inspired by the originals. Pow, Bang, Boom!

Hollyberry Shea Butter Handmade Natural Soap

A beautiful merlot color and a pine, berry, clove, unisex, seasonal scent. I've inriched this bar with shea butter, sweet almond oil and vegetable glycerin for skin loving goodness.

"Marbelous Chocolate Peanut Butter Cake with Salted Caramel Glaze"- found in Better Homes and Gardens.

It was yummy. Not amazing, but very good. As I continue searching for bundts, I'm becoming more and more picky. Maybe it's because I'm such a big fan of peanut butter, and I could taste more cinnamon than peanut butter in this, or maybe it's because they only use 1 stick of butter in the recipe instead of two. . .

There’s not much I enjoy more than spending a day in the kitchen cooking up all kinds of goodness. Since there are only 2 of us in the house and we don’t eat lots of sweets or grain items, it doesn’t take much time to prepare the food we eat. I’m always happy when there’s a party invite or some other event that allows me to spend the day baking/cooking.

chiotsrun.com/2012/07/28/cooking-up-a-storm/

The beautiful thing about this dish is that it can be made with whatever you have in the kitchen or whatever happens to be in your harvest basket that morning. In mid summer tomatoes, peppers and basil would be heaven; in spring asparagus, leeks and cheese are perfect. The possibilities are truly endless. Assemble them the night before letting them rest on the counter overnight or if you’re squeamish about food being warm put them in the fridge overnight (they’ll cook much better if you warm them on the counter for an hour before baking).

Growing up my mom always made tons of Christmas cookies, caramels and other goodies and sent a big plate full to each neighbor. We've done something similar since we moved in here. I'm not much of a cookie maker when it comes to the holidays, I prefer chocolates and other things like caramel corn. We also don't stop at the neighbors when spreading delicious holiday cheer. We take goodies for everyone at the Post Office, the library and our small town local bank. Of course we live in a small town, so each of these place only has 4-7 employees.

after having my sewing machine for over 25 years, I finally discovered that I had always had a 'concealed zipper foot'!!! I've always struggled to put zips in...after 2 attempts with the new(ly discovered foot) I figured out how it works...pretty darn pleased with the result!
