I think this is a bark scorpion. Little beastie with a nasty sting. But they're only lethal to the elderly, children and those who go into anaphylactic shock. Still I wouldn't try to get too close even if you're none of the above.
Its armor looks like it was welded together.
Edit: After researching some more, I no longer think this is an Arizona bark scorpion. The closest so far is Serradigitus agilis. Not a medically significant species. I was nervous for no good reason then . . . :-)

I found this poor little thing laying on one of my dogs beds. At first I thought it may have been sleeping, as it didn't appear injured or sick in any way. I scooped him up and there was no movement, so I asked politely if he'd be happy to pose for a focus stack. I gathered from the lack of response that he didn't care either way.
This stack contains 11 photos taken at 2x magnification. I may have been able to get away with less, but it's only my second attempt at a stack so I figured the more the merrier :o) It was compiled with Zerene Stacker.
There'll be days
When i'll stray
I may appear to be
Constantly out of reach
I give in to sin
Because i like to practise what i preach
I'm not trying to say
I'll have it all my way
I'm always willing to learn
When you've got something to teach
And i'll make it all worthwhile
I'll make your heart smile

Happy Friday Caterpillar...More aggressive self-defense measures are taken by some caterpillars. These measures include having spiny bristles or long fine hair-like setae with detachable tips that will irritate by lodging in the skin or mucous membranes. However some birds (such as cuckoos) will swallow even the hairiest of caterpillars.

I am still determined to be cheerful and happy, in whatever situation I may be; for I have also learned from experience that the greater part of our happiness or misery depends upon our dispositions, and not upon our circumstances.

Puddling...the butterflies need these minerals to supplement their diet. This behavior is called puddling. Sometimes, butterflies will fly away from a puddle and return to it a few seconds later -- this may disturb the water, bringing more minerals to the surface. If there's no water around, a butterfly may regurgitate into the soil and then drink in the hope of retrieving minerals.
The main purpose is to enable male butterflies to contribute to females' ability to lay eggs.
