A Taste Of Summer’s Glaze -

Beneath the scorching eyes of the sun, every butterfly dreams of a perpetual burst of energy and achieving that perfect cinnamon tone. I hooted the moths for tanning in the moonlight but they always pocket my insults quietly. My biggest mistake is to accept as true; liver spots and freckles happen only to the fair-skinned. How naïve of me to believe I can escape the curse of the sun merely because I’m ebony. As you see, the result of baking too much under the sun is having white freckles all over my dark wings. Now it’s the moths’ turn to make fun and laughed at the speckles of my folly.

Flies in the Diptera family Asilidae are commonly known as robber flies. The family Asilidae contains about 7,100 described species worldwide. All robber flies have stout, spiny legs, a dense moustache of bristles on the face, and 3 simple eyes in a characteristic depression between their two large compound eyes. The mystax helps protect the head and face when the fly encounters prey bent on defense. The antennae are short, 3-segmented, sometimes with a bristle-like structure called an arista. The short, strong proboscis is used to stab and inject victims with saliva containing neurotoxic and proteolytic enzymes which paralyze and digest the insides; the fly then sucks the liquefied meal through the proboscis. Many species have long, tapering abdomens, sometimes with a sword-like ovipositor. Others are fat-bodied bumble bee mimics. Adult robber flies attack other flies, beetles, butterflies and moths, various bees, dragon and damselflies, ichneumon wasps, grasshoppers, and some spiders.

True Friends In Trying Times -

You remember the times when we shared a stalk of beauty leaf and split the midrib in halves? Remember how we joined hands and chased off the earless agamid who tried to smoke a cigar with our rolled leaves? He can’t do that, we have babies inside! The day we met, I knew from the start this friendship would last. Man is self-centered but insects are friendship-centered. You tell me a funny joke on my bad days and I’ll lend a listening ear to your complaints for a month. You get upset over things or anyone, I’ll cry two buckets with you. If it’s not enough, I don't mind knocking out my front tooth and beam a silly grin so you’ll laugh. In the real and virtual world, blue skies may change grey and young trees wilt, but our friendship endures happily ever after.

greenbottle fly (lucilia sericata)

I ran into this model in my backyard today. He seemed very unbothered by me sticking a camera lens right in his face. This was shot with my D90 through a 50mm 1.8 reversed with a Macro ring.
