The "Visivision" Machine
This brilliant piece of electrical engineering of 1910 must surely have been the first attempt to snatch pictures from the ether, and foreshadow television-to-come.
It is constructed, at white heat, from the things most easily to hand, such as the parlour gramophone, and Auntie's old sewing machine.
Note particularly the egg-beater for stirring up electrons, the large thermionic valve (which apparently started life as a case of butterflies) and the wandering antennae, which feel through the atmosphere for the appropriate impulses.
Unfortunately these have so far only managed to assemble an inexplicable and shadowy picture (but, nevertheless, in colour!) of Grandpa bull-fighting next door's goat.

The operator does not interact with riders at all. Fares are either paid off-board, or at this on-board vending machine. This on-board system is found in Portland and Tacoma as well.
I was invited by Benny of Tenacious Toys to be a part of their first custom toy show, the Candy-Coated Custom Show. The show was held on April 21, 7-9pm at The London Candy Company, 1442 Lexington Ave. New York, NY 10128.
The theme of the show was either candy or something British; I decided to focus on doing something totally different than my usual work. I wanted to create a piece that not only would allow people to view it but also had them play with it. After much deliberation and trial-and-errors, I decided to concentrate on making a real working gumball/mystery machine.
This was created using a 10" Mad*L and incorporating parts from a gumball machine into it. There were many obstacles in making this:
- getting the base of the figure to hold the slot/wheel
- getting the wheel to work correctly
- getting the quarter to fall into the correct place in the back
- getting a way to get into the figure to grab the quarters and locking it
- getting a way to put gumballs into the head
- getting the head to have the gumballs fall into the base correctly
- etc. etc.
At the show, the idea would be to put a quarter into the slot, turn the wheel and catch the gumball that comes out. I placed 2 marbles (the "eyes of the dragon") inside with the gumballs and if you were lucky to grab one of the marbles, you would win a prize (one of my "Circuit Death" t-shirts).
Throughout the night, people were popping in quarters and only 1 person won a shirt!
This was probably my most ambitious and first functioning custom vinyl toy. I chose to not do too much paint work on the figure and keep it more to a mystery machine. Our Maker Art class created a Time Machine this year, inviting you to travel through time from the age of dinosaurs to the 50th century.
Our 4th and 5th graders at the Lycée Français designed their own scenes from the past, present or future, and brought them to life with motion, lights and sounds. They also worked in teams to build interactive features like illuminated keypads, spinners and doors, using the popular Arduino platform.
In our after-school classes, we combine art, technology and storytelling to help children create their own magical worlds. They learn to design their ideas, build them with a variety of tools, animate them with electronics and tell their stories. This unique multimedia course helps them develop their creativity, collaboration and problem-solving skills -- and builds their confidence that they can help change the world.
This year, we had a really good group of 9 students, ages 8 to 11 -- many of whom had taken our Maker Art classes before. They were very creative and engaged, and did a great job presenting their work at the Lycée Français -- and at Marinovators at the College of Marin on April 22.
This Maker Art class was taught by Fabrice Florin and Edward Janne at the Lycée Français in Sausalito in winter 2017. We met every week for 12 workshops of 90 minutes each, Thursdays at 3:30pm, from January 5 to March 30, 2017. Our teachers are part of the Tam Makers learning community and we prepared materials for this project in our state-of-the-art makerspace at the nearby Tam High School.

Great condition Brother Ult 2001 sewing machine from original owner. Lightly used, was never my primary sewing machine and only briefly my primary embroidery machine. This baby has been living the life of leisure at our summer home for the past 6 years. Used, but not heavily, during this time.

Mark Murphy says Boris is "a great proponents of simply superb singing". Boris Savoldelli is a new vocal performer on the music scene who is receiving kudos from around the world. He is always challenging his “vocal instrument” with new and original ways of singing, thanks to his music background that ranges from classical studies to jazz to rock-funk to avant-garde experimental music. His influences include his mentor in jazz, singer Mark Murphy.
In 2008 Boris released his most representative album titled INSANOLOGY, an experimental vocal solo project, composed, largely arranged and recorded using only a looper machine. This CD represent Boris’ “light side”, the melodic and more accessible part of Boris’ music. “Insanology” received flattering reviews from all around the world (Italy, USA, Brazil, France, UK, Holland, Russia, Germany, Israel).
In 2008, critic and producer Arnaldo DeSouteiro (Herbie Hancock, John McLaughlin and Joao Gilberto) put “Insanology” on his list of “Ten Best Vocal Jazz Albums of the Year.” He also put Boris in third place in the category of “Best Male Jazz Singers” after Tony Bennet and Al Jarreau. A year later, in 2009, Boris placed second on DeSouteiro’s same list. In 2011 Boris placed fourth again in the category of “Best Male Jazz Singers” on DeSouteiro’s poll and Boris' 2011 cd, "Biocosmopolitan", on his list of “Ten Best Vocal Jazz Albums of the Year 2011.”

My newest two sewing machines. This brings my working herd up to 11 machines, the oldest will be 100 next year.
In this view we can see that the holes in the filter plate in the head of the machine are randomly punched: original Italian machine have hole forming the outline of a six pointed star. You can also see that the screws that hold the plate in have rusted badly- and one has snapped off.
Around 2006 brand new atomics started appearing on the market. Though they didn't exactly look brand new... For many years prior to this the only source of Atomic coffee makers was second hand markets and auction houses. Lucky individuals found one in the attic or at a church sale, but most people had to bid high, and pay through the nose.
However all was not as it seemed with these new machines. Although they were labeled as being Bon Trading (australia) imports of Italian made Atomics- they were very poorly made with a rough, hand finished appearance. Many of them did not work very well, and they were 'not quite right'...
It was soon discovered that these machine were made in India and falsely labeled as being made in 'Italy'. The prices of these dodgy machines dropped rapidly and then they disappeared from the market altogether. Today it is hard to find one of these Indian made Atomics and they are collectible in their own right.
For the collector interested in purchasing an Atomic it is a simple matter to identify one of these fakes. The most prominent difference between these machine and earlier Italian made Atomics is the boiler plug. On the Indian machine this plug sticks out in an ugly fashion. Other obvious differences can be seen in the bakelite parts. These parts are much thicker and are poorly formed compared to vintage Italian machines. The filter basket is distinctive: the holes in it appear to be randomly punched with a nail or similar implement by hand.
These machine are not too bad as a hand finished attempt to replicate the atomic form. It is by no means an easy (or cheap) process. Sand casting the body is an art in itself. It is clear this atomic was reverse engineered from an Italian made Atomic- probably a model dating from the 70's. They copied every detail right down to the label.
The example pictured here works and was actually used to make coffee by its original owners for over 4 years. When they purchased it they were told it 'was made in Italy'. When they complained of the poor quality they were sent another one...
However the machine was marketed deceptively, and we would not recommenced using one to actually to make coffee: they are poorly made from inferior materials. There are rumors the alloy was recycled from old car parts...

If you have good eyes you can spot the wooden bridge in the background. I have used that bridge many times over the last decade shooting my View From A Bridge photos. Walking out on the bridge earlier today I spotted this beast at the other end of the pond. It made a lot of noise so I decided to check it it out. It was a guy from Maxtech. They have a few impressive machines. This might be an amphibian tool from Truxor. The guy told me that they had fixed another wetland in the area and I told him that I had been there and taken a few photos.
The vending machine, this one particularly, are big energy wasters. They stay on all day and not only use light but they use energy to keep the refrigeration on and running. The products are also in plastic containers and most can be brought from home.

Although having a family resemblance to the XK120 and XK140, the XK150 was radically modernized. A one piece windscreen replaced the split screen, and the wing line no longer dropped as much over the doors. The alloy bonnet was also widened, and opened down to the wings.
In the interior, the XK140's walnut dashboard was replaced by an elegantly leather trimmed dash. Thinner doors gave the interior needed space as well.
Four-wheel Dunlop 12 in. Disc-Brakes appeared for the first time. Suspension and chassis were very similar to that on the XK140. Steering was by rack and pinion; power steering was not offered. Production ended in October of 1960.

This iconic British roadster is finished in a beautiful metallic blue over dark blue upholstery, complimented by chrome wire wheels, and driving lamps; displaying excellent fit and finish throughout. The car also features correct “J” headlamps and dual exhaust.
The cabin of the 150 is quite striking. Supple hides and well polished wood adorn the cockpit as well as plenty of brightwork. An aftermarket stereo system has been installed under the dash.
The well sorted 3.4L motor is quite stout, exhibiting strong acceleration and steady idling as the automatic transmission shifts through all gears with ease. As a reliable machine, this Jaguar certainly draws attention with its striking looks, all while offering a pleasant care-free driving experience.

The second problem with the machine is my own damn fault, because I was trying to fix too many things at once.
This is the 4-digit display in the apron, that shows your remaining balls and credits. When I first started up the machine, this was working fine, but there was a piece of green transparent plastic over it that had come loose. Also the ball return wasn't working. So I took off the apron to fix the plastic overlay, and also take a look at the ball return.
In the process of fixing the ball return, and also testing the rest of the components, I fired a few balls and let them roll down the playfield. One ball rolled down the left outlane, and without the apron to divert it toward the drain, it rolled right underneath this display. I reached in to fish it out, and pressed it up against the backside of the board, shorted a whole bunch of circuits, and got a mild electric shock. A few seconds later, the display read EE:EE, and faded out, and that lovely black spot appeared in the top right corner. It hasn't worked since.
Fortunately, they're only $28 at Pinball Resource.
It's especially sad because a lot of the stuff I've read about Gottlieb System 80 games talks about how hardy these displays are, and how even though there are a lot of other electrical and design problems with these games this is the one thing Gottlieb got right, and unless you do something really dumb and negligent they'll last forever.
Oh well...

After I got my shots of the High Street, I went back to Henley-in-Arden Station to go home.
As I expected, it is quite a deserted station (maybe as it is a Sunday).
And another thing, the station building is boarded up, so if you live round here, where do you buy your tickets from (other than online)? Didn't see a ticket machine.
This is the second station to be called Henley-in-Arden Station. It opened in 1908.
