What is CNC Machining?
CNC machine is commonly used in manufacturing and industrial production. But exactly what is CNC machining?
CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machining is a kind of subtractive manufacturing process. In CNC manufacturing, the software control system issues commands to make the tool meet the required movements. This year, we are creating a Time Machine at Pataphysical Studios, with a world-class team of of artists, makers, engineers and multimedia innovators.
This interactive art exhibit invites you to travel through time and meet characters from the past, present and future. We hope to intrigue, enchant and engage visitors in a playful experience that combines interactive art, multimedia theater and technology.
These first designs illustrate the experience we are creating. We will invite our guests to go through a short interactive ritual during their visit: walk around the exhibit, step into a magic portal, pick a time to visit, travel to that time, meet its characters and return back to the present.
This is the most complex art project we have ever created together. We are now working in teams to design and build different parts of the Time Machine, making interactive art with lights, sound and motion powered by Arduino and Raspberry Pi -- as well as producing short videos of the different times you will travel to.
We're all excited about our next collective art project and can’t wait to see what it will look like in a year!

I was going through some old boxes in the basement and was excited to find this. It is a portable (and very manual) adding machine that would have been used before caculators were available/affordable. Based on an Internet search, it appears this is from 1955. I think my great aunt gave it to me when I was a kid to play with.

Not man enough to brave the well below freezing temps, I opted to use my “old man” card and get my four-mile hike in wandering around Town Center Mall. Of course, I took a camera with me and once I saw how many vending machines there are in the mall, I decided to make that my photo project of the day. Sometimes you got to make your own fun.

Ever wondered what trickery was responsible for reading the magnetic strips on your card when pushing into an ATM machine ?
Well, it's one of these - a magnetic tape head (but not chopped in half obviously). This is what I spent 9 years of my life buying materials for from all over the world, the core of the little coil was made from a nickle alloy bought from the USA, the wire from japan, the brass from Bulgaria and some of the assembly work was shipped out to the Dominican Republic.
As with many things, we could buy-in ready made heads from the far east cheaper then just the brass work on this model, but ours were built to suit customer specifications. We also made black box flight recorder heads !! Scary thought.
This 1920's classic is still fully operational. You insert a nickel, pick your candy of choice, pull the corresponding lever and then the above door slides down one notch enabling you to retrieve your choice.
