The last generation of vending machines for the "Sonntagsblick", a Sunday newspaper, is disappearing. There are about 1500 of them in Switzerland. It all started in 1969 with machines in the shape of an astronaut’s helmet. It was the year of the moon landing. But these prototypes didn't work properly. The vending machines were created as a reaction to the then restrictive regulations regarding Sunday working hours and shop opening hours. The current price is CHF 5.20. The boxes will be filled for the last time on July 28, 2024. Then they are removed. Switzerland, June 16, 2024.
i promised my dad i'd put in a buck into one of these things on his behalf. Some drunk girl cut in front of me in line and didn't win anything, then I go up, put my dollar in, pull and bam! ... crown, crown, crown.... empty. The look on the drunk girl's face was much more rewarding than the money.

"This is the coal machine where Uncle Rufus worked. It would lift the coal cars up to the top of the structure and then tip them over into a hopper. The coal would slide down a shoot and into the boat. I believe it was the Ashtabula and Buffalo Coal Dock."

Anyway: bubble gum machines rule!!! Ok, they did when I was still a child.. What's funny/weird is that lately, I've discovered lots of them around in the district where my workplace is. (And I find it weird because I didn't think that lots of people were still using them.. but apparently they are. ??!?!)
