Best seen larger.

SugarbearSteve and I went to the zoo yesterday on a whim, testing our new XSi cameras. Though we each had initial start-up issues with focusing when we first got our dSLRs, I think we're starting to get the hang of it. I still have lots of learning and playing to do.

I’ll try to catch up with you later.

EDIT:

I almost forgot to share with you a joke a friend sent me:

Most people don't know that back in 1912, Hellmann's mayonnaise was manufactured in England. In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after its stop in New York.

This would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise ever delivered to Mexico, but as we know, the great ship did not make it to New York. The ship hit an iceberg, sank, and the cargo was forever lost.

The people of Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise, and were eagerly awaiting its delivery, were disconsolate at the loss. Their anguish was so great, that they declared a National Day of Mourning, which they still observe to this day.

The National Day of Mourning occurs each year on May 5th and is known, of course, as Sinko De Mayo.

Here is an article about the real celebration of Cinco de Mayo.

Spent a day at the Jurong Bird Park : )

It's my cats' 21st birthday today! I can't believe they're so old :(

The blue-and-yellow macaw (Ara ararauna), also known as the blue-and-gold macaw, is a large South American parrot with blue top parts and yellow under parts. It is a member of the large group of neotropical parrots known as macaws. It inhabits forest (especially varzea, but also in open sections of terra firme or unflooded forest), woodland and savannah of tropical South America. They are popular in aviculture because of their striking color, ability to talk, ready availability in the marketplace, and close bonding to humans.

Macaws are long-tailed, often colourful New World parrots.[1] Of the many different Psittacidae (true parrots) genera, six are classified as macaws: Ara, Anodorhynchus, Cyanopsitta, Primolius, Orthopsittaca, and Diopsittaca. Previously, the members of the genus Primolius were placed in Propyrrhura, but the former is correct in accordance with ICZN rules.[2] Macaws are native to Central America (especially Mexico), South America, and formerly the Caribbean. Most species are associated with forests, especially rainforests, but others prefer woodland or savannah-like habitats.

Proportionately larger beaks, long tails, and relatively bare, light-coloured, medial (facial patch) areas distinguish macaws from other parrots. Sometimes the facial patch is smaller in some species, and limited to a yellow patch around the eyes and a second patch near the base of the beak in the members of the genus Anodorhynchus. A macaw's facial feather pattern is as unique as a fingerprint.

The largest macaws are the hyacinth, Buffon's (great green) and green-winged macaws. While still relatively large, macaws of the genera Cyanopsitta, Orthopsittaca and Primolius are significantly smaller than the members of Anodorhynchus and Ara. The smallest member of the family, the red-shouldered macaw, is no larger than some parakeets of the genus Aratinga.

Macaws, like other parrots, toucans and woodpeckers, are zygodactyl, having their first and fourth toes pointing backward.

Killman zoo is located 2 kilometres or 1.2 miles east of Highway 6 at 237 Unity Road East. It is a privately owned and operated zoo using 9 acres (36,000 m2) of trails on a property spanning 33 acres (130,000 m2). There are gift shops and picnic facilities; which allow guests to eat pre-packaged food at the zoo. Tamer animals like dwarf goats and deer can be petted by people of all ages at the special petting zoo portion of the attraction. People with wheelchairs are able to access the sights with wheelchair-accessible trails.

The Killman family that operates the zoo are descended from the Seneca, Onandaga and Mohawk Tribes of the Canadian First Nations. An adult ticket costs $18.50 while a child's ticket costs $10.50. The zoo is an ongoing project and expansion is commonly taking place.

There are a wide range of animals including lemurs, porcupines, coyotes, wolves, birds of prey, bear and approximately 30 exotic cats. The cats make up a large portion of the zoo including lions, tigers, jaguars, lynx, bobcats and cougars. You can get as close to 5 feet to these animals.

Two macaws affectionately interact at Sylvan Heights Bird Park. I guess it was affectionate; sure didn't seem aggressive or hostile. This may be a military macaw and a blue and gold (yellow) macaw; if not, feel free to comment below.

The hyacinth macaw (Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus), or hyacinthine macaw, is a parrot native to central and eastern South America. With a length (from the top of its head to the tip of its long pointed tail) of about 100 cm (3.3 ft) it is longer than any other species of parrot. It is the largest macaw and the largest flying parrot species, though the flightless kakapo of New Zealand can outweigh it at up to 3.5 kg. While generally easily recognized, it can be confused with the far rarer and smaller Lear's macaw. Habitat loss and the trapping of wild birds for the pet trade have taken a heavy toll on their population in the wild, so the species is classified as Vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red List, and it is protected by its listing on Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

Another Parrot shot from KL Bird Park. Another cheeky one!

Visited Don Alvaro's Macaw Farm in Costa Rica where he has rehabbed injured or captured Macaws for nearly twenty years. Parrots roam freely over his farm but come quickly when he calls for feeding time.
