Lying in secluded privacy in its own valley, Stourhead features one of the world's finest 18th-century landscape gardens. A magnificent lake is central to the design, and there are classical temples, enchanting grottos and rare and exotic trees. The Hoare family history can be uncovered at Stourhead House, a majestic Palladian mansion housing a unique Regency library with fabulous collections of Chippendale furniture and paintings, all set amid delightful lawns and parkland. Stourhead is at the heart of a 1,072-hectare (2,650-acre) estate where chalk downs, ancient woods and farmland are managed for nature conservation

An Evzone on guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Syntagma Square in Athens. The Evzones are an elite branch of the Hellenic Army and the men are selected specially for this unit based on a number of requirements, one being at least 6' 1' tall.

The Tomb is in the French urban and classical tradition, combined with the modern spirit of Art Deco and with symbolic references to Ancient Greece. The main issue was the integration of the Tomb with Syntagma Square and with the neoclassical Palace and the contribution to the redevelopment of the square. The sculpture is at the center of the wall. To the left and to the right there are two side staircases while in the center there is a rectangular raised grave. The stairs of the monuments are purely decorative, as the steps are for observation during ceremonies. The sculpture represents the naked male figure of a dead warrior lying on the ground. He holds a circular shield in his left hand and wears an Ancient Greek-style helmet. The representation of the body gives the impression that the Unknown Soldier is ready to arise at any moment.

To the left and right of The Tomb are sculptured phrases from the works of Thucydides. To the left, "There's one bed made, but, still, empty: the bed of the unidentified soldiers"; to the right, "The whole earth is the sepulcher of famous men". Both quotes are from History of the Peloponnesian War. Over the main sculpture in smaller writing, is a sculptured phrase which reads "To an unknown soldier".

As best I can figure, Chef Me Tur means Lying Chief. Even it that's not right, I like Lying Chief.

Mahé is the largest island (157.3 km²) of Seychelles, lying in the northeast of the nation in the Indian Ocean. The population of Mahé was 77,000, as of the 2010 census. It contains the capital city of Victoria and accommodates 86% of the country's total population. The island was named after Bertrand-François Mahé de La Bourdonnais, a French governor of Isle de France (modern-day Mauritius).

Mahé's tallest peak is Morne Seychellois at 905 m (2,969 ft), which lies in the Morne Seychellois National Park. The northern and eastern parts of the island are home to much of the population and the Seychelles International Airport which opened in 1971. The southern and western parts have Baie Ternay Marine National Park, Port Launay Marine National Park, and University of Seychelles. The Sainte Anne Marine National Park lies offshore, as do Conception Island, Thérèse Island, Anonyme Island and several smaller islands.

Mahé was first visited by the British in 1609 and not visited by Europeans again until Lazare Picault's expedition of 1742. The French navy frégate Le Cerf (English: The Deer) arrived at Port Victoria on 1 November 1756. On board was Corneille Nicholas Morphey, leader of the French expedition, which claimed the island for the King of France by laying a Stone of Possession on Mahe, Seychelles’ oldest monument, now on display in the National Museum, Victoria.

In August 1801 a Royal Navy frigate HMS Sibylle captured the French frigate Chiffonne on the island. Mahé remained a French possession until 1812 when it became a British colony. It remained a colony until 1976 when Seychelles became an independent nation.

Mahé's forests have rare endemic plants found only in Seychelles, such as the critically endangered Medusagyne oppositifolia (the jellyfish tree), the carnivorous Nepenthes pervillei (Seychelles pitcher plant), and many unique species of orchid.

Mahé had a huge land reclamation project due to a shortage of housing, in the areas of Bel Ombre and the Port of Victoria.

Mahé's economy is mainly dependent on tourism. Air Seychelles has its head office on the property of Seychelles International Airport on the island. The Port of Victoria is home to a tuna fishing and canning industry.

This relatively simple walk runs along the rocky north-west coast of Mahé to the picturesque, secluded bay of Anse Major. For the starting point, simply take your rental car from Beau Vallon up to Bel Ombre and Danzil. The road is only passable by car for a certain distance. If you'd rather take the bus, climb aboard the number 21 (Victoria - Bel Ombre) and take it to the terminus, before following the road on foot. A small path leads upwards, and once you reach approximately 100 metres (328 ft) above sea level, the coast moves over to the west. Here, on the bare granite rocks, it is sparsely vegetated, but you have a sensational view of the sea on one side, and an impressive outlook over the imposing Morne Seychellois National Park on the other. Please be aware that there is little shade on this hike, so try to avoid the midday sun. After about an hour, the narrow but well-marked path winds down to Anse Major. This not only gives you the chance to refresh yourself, but also to enjoy some really good snorkelling spots. At the weekend, you may meet locals here who come by boat to enjoy a beach barbeque. If you want to, you could enquire at your hotel as to whether they will arrange a boat to come and pick you up; the view of the ocean waves crashing against the rocks makes the trip worth it! For those who'd like to walk a bit further, a path leads to the south-west, which reaches the Baie Ternay National Park after an hour or so, including its unspoilt coves such as Anse du Riz and Baie aux Chagrin. Please note: this route has steep climbs, and there is little protection from the sun.

What Lies Ahead

You lay your head to rest at night,

Like all, you think of tomorrow, next week.

You wonder what life holds in store,

You look out the window and down the street.

All seems still for the moment,

Until your nind once again decide to roam.

You think of the children, your life,

It took a lifetime for you to own.

For what is here today, could soon be gone,

We can’t predict what tomorrow will`bring our way,

For all the love and luxuries we now have,

Could all too easily before our eyes go astray.

Our jobs we`ve all worked at through life,

Our family, our homes we have had for so long

All too easily destroyed and gone in a moment,

We ponder in thought again, what has gone wrong.

The sky appears to be dark and grey,

Yet a glimer of light still radiates through,

For we can survive if planned ahead,

Making right preparations, both me & you.

-Poem by Rose Marie Rideout

Deoria Tal lies 2 Kms from Sari. Ascent is a little steep but the distance is too little to be troublesome. The paved road makes it harder to trek all the way to Deoria Tal. There is a Swami Narayan Temple on the way just above Sari Village which bears striking resemblance to the better known temples like Tungnath but is very recently built. The view of Chandrashila from here is very enchanting.

Evia Island.

The island of Evia lies along the Eastern coast of Central Greece, and is accessible to the mainland via a bridge. There are also frequent ferries to several parts of the island. It is 175 km long and is the second largest island in Greece, and the third largest in the Eastern Mediterranean.

It's hard to believe that only a few months ago all these rocks were exposed. Two weeks ago, when I shot this, only the biggest was still sticking out. After the recent rains this one probably is under water now too.

WAH 007

Today's challenge set for the WAH group is Childhood Memory with the following caveat: "Even though any childhood memory can be used, try to use a memory you have of/with your dad! "

Always a sad day when you miss your dad as much as I do, so I generally let Father's day slide. However I'm giving this group a go so here I am.

My dad went to work in the States when I was very young and brought back a cowboy outfit which I still have but sadly can no longer squeeze into. He had a lifelong love of what is now called the Western but we knew as cowboys and Indians. It is a passion I shared and still enjoy now through cinema and TV but mostly through writers like Cormac McCarthey and Elmore Leonard.

I would spend hours lying on the floor, lost to the 20th century, with an array of toy cowboys and Indians, occasionally augmented with knights in armour and WW2 soldiers. One of the lasting memories of my dad was that he was always on the side of the Indians despite them being invariably cast as the bad guys.

It confused me at the time but it also made me think and I wonder now if it didn't inform my world view. Made me question the received wisdom, dig a little at the narrative and always, always at least try to see it from the other guy's point of view.
