The pretty little seaside town of Looe in south-east Cornwall lies between two steep hillsides on opposite sides of the Looe River. At one time they were the separate towns of East Looe and West Looe, but they were amalgamated around the start of the 20th century to become the town of Looe. It has always been one of my favourite places, and until recently we had a holiday home just outside the town.
The old town of West Looe was centred around the bottom of West Looe Hill, which leads down to the riverside. There are numerous old buildings there, many of which are listed by Historic England. However, perhaps the newest building in town - despite appearances - is the Sardine Factory, which has only been constructed in the past few years. Cornwall was once famous for its pilchards, which kept fleets of fishing boats occupied. However, they were over-fished and the local fishing industry almost collapsed. Now pilchards are starting to make a comeback, but in order to give them a fresh start they have been renamed Cornish sardines.
Situated on a narrow headland between the sea and Bodden - the peninsula Fischland-Darß-Zingst - lies Ahrenshoop. The artists' village Ahrenshoop now has more than 120 years of tradition. Immediately behind the dunes is the former residential and studio building by Theobald Schorn, built in 1909 in the style of typical fisherman's houses.
Vík lies directly south of the Mýrdalsjökull glacier, which itself is on top of the Katla volcano. Katla has not erupted since 1918, and this longer than typical dormant period has led to speculation that an eruption may occur soon. An eruption of Katla could melt enough ice to trigger an enormous flash flood, potentially large enough to obliterate the entire town. The town's church, located high on a hill, is believed to be the only building that would survive such a flood. Thus, the people of Vík practice periodic drills and are trained to rush to the church at the first sign of an eruption. The town of about 300 inhabitants has 1,400 hotel rooms for scientists and tourists, who are also briefed about Katla's dangers. (Wikipedia)

Located on the Nete river, Lier was settled in the 8th century and developed around the chapel of St. Peter. Lier became an important textile centre in the 14th century. It was besieged and taken by the Spanish in 1582, by the Dutch in 1595, and by the English in 1706 during the War of the Spanish Succession.
Lier is a French commune that was granted city rites in 1212. It is located in the Flanders region of Northern Belgium. Located on the Nete river, Lier was settled in the 8th century and developed around the chapel of St. Peter. Lier became an important textile centre in the 14th century. It was besieged and taken by the Spanish in 1582, by the Dutch in 1595, and by the English in 1706 during the War of the Spanish Succession. Belgian nationalists resisted a Dutch attack in 1830. Belgium has seen its fair share of war and occupation.
Destruction of Lier occurred as a result of bombing in Antwerp in 1914; however, many of the medieval structures survived including, the Gothic belfry, St. Gommarus’ Church and the béguinage.
Despite lying only a mile or so away from the Kinder plateau (and even closer to the Pennine Way) the summit of Brown Knoll (569m / 1867ft) at the head of Edale, is ignored by most hikers. A walk over the summit is to indulge in a high-level 2 mile trek over fairly featureless moorland terrain linking Kinder Scout and the Lord's Seat / Mam Tor ridge.
Summer walks over the top can be a real pleasure with skylarks heard (although less often scene), along with the occasional grouse call. Winter walks here risk being exposed to biting westerly winds whipping in from the Irish Sea which can make the two mile crossing seem much longer.
This day's route didn't take me over the top but with the backlight and silhouetted effect, I couldn't resist a shot capturing the rather bleak and sinister atmosphere as I walked the last few yards to the summit.
For the rail enthusiast, no trains visible from here I'm afraid, but the 2 mile long Cowburn Tunnel does pass somewhere below and one of the ventilation shafts is clearly visible during the latter stages of the crossing.

Tot voor kort was het in Lier een komen en gaan van 21'ers en 27'ers. Het grootste aandeel reed op de IC relaties tussen Turnhout-Binche en Antwerpen-Hamont, maar bij de introductie van de rechtstreekse IC Antwerpen-Hasselt werd ook hier een omloop voorzien van een 27 met M4 rijtuigen. Ik kon zo'n rit vastleggen in het voorjaar van 2022, waarbij de 2708 na een korte stop in Lier de reis weer verder zet richting Antwerpen.

This area of the California Central Coast is a depository for sawed-off trees. The sawing is done in Scotland by eurasian beavers who tend to forget where they put their logs after long stays at the local pubs. The logs make their way through the Panama canal, sometimes causing massive log jams, and eventually wash ashore on this beach. It is easy to identify the originating country because the logs smell like scotch.
