Ce château féodal était entouré sur trois côtés par des ravins qui lui tenaient lieu de fossés. Au quatrième côté, vers le couchant, le vieux donjon se rattachait par une croupe étroite au coteau. C'était son entrée principale, défendue par des ponts levis et des tourelles. Du sommet de la grande tour carré, on apercevait le Rhône. On pouvait facilement repéré les signaux envoyés depuis le château de Serves pour signaler d'éventuelles attaques ou l'arrivée de bateaux pour percevoir des droits de péage.
Cela n'empêcha pas le château d'être surpris en 1685 par
l'aventureux capitaine Clavel, chef de partisants huguenots, et
sa bande. Après avoir brûlé l'église de Lemps, il attaqua
l'Iserand. Le château lui aurait été ouvert par trahison par un
des serviteurs. Il fut pillé, livré aux flammes et ses habitants
massacrés.
Depuis, les ruines n'ont pas été relevées. Les villageois du
voisinage n'y aurait pas établi leur demeure car la nuit, on y
entendant, dit on, des rumeurs étranges, et on y apercevait des
fantômes ensanglantés !

Bei diesem Haus handelt es sich um ein gotisches Steinhaus, das 1568 eine Fassade im Stil der Weserrenaissance erhalten hat. Bauherr dieser Veränderung war Johann Reiche (Rike), Mitgleide einer der ältesten Hamelner Bürgerfamilien, Baumeister war Cord Tönnis, der auch das Leisthaus errichtet hat. Seit 1870 wird das Haus als Gaststätte genutzt und trägt seit dem den Namen "Rattenkrug". Der Rattenkrug ist das älteste Gasthaus Hamelns.
"Der Rattenkrug" gehört zudem zu den schönsten und bekanntesten Gebäuden der Rattenfängerstadt. Die zentrale Lage direkt in der Fußgängerzone macht es zu einem der beliebtesten Restaurants für Einheimische und Touristen.

I bought this tree peony 3 years ago from a nursery that was closing, it did not have a flower or a tag and looked like it will not make it. I had transplanted it to a full sun part of my Oriental bed in the front garden, last year it had 2 tiny dried up buds, but this spring it has 3 fully formed ones. I am so eager to see what color the flowers will be, either a white or a soft pink according to the sales person.

Update: Today (May 14, 2024) I peeked too see some of the petals showing and it is a Japanese "Renkaku" white peony. It has several large buds, so when they are all open the Oriental bed will look fantastic.
