Ce château féodal était entouré sur trois côtés par des ravins qui lui tenaient lieu de fossés. Au quatrième côté, vers le couchant, le vieux donjon se rattachait par une croupe étroite au coteau. C'était son entrée principale, défendue par des ponts levis et des tourelles. Du sommet de la grande tour carré, on apercevait le Rhône. On pouvait facilement repéré les signaux envoyés depuis le château de Serves pour signaler d'éventuelles attaques ou l'arrivée de bateaux pour percevoir des droits de péage.
Cela n'empêcha pas le château d'être surpris en 1685 par
l'aventureux capitaine Clavel, chef de partisants huguenots, et
sa bande. Après avoir brûlé l'église de Lemps, il attaqua
l'Iserand. Le château lui aurait été ouvert par trahison par un
des serviteurs. Il fut pillé, livré aux flammes et ses habitants
massacrés.
Depuis, les ruines n'ont pas été relevées. Les villageois du
voisinage n'y aurait pas établi leur demeure car la nuit, on y
entendant, dit on, des rumeurs étranges, et on y apercevait des
fantômes ensanglantés !

A final shot from the Noordam of Tauranga's Pilot Bay and Mauao / Mount Maunganui extinct volcano cone and Maunganui resort townsite peninsula.
Mount Maunganui is steeply sided with a flat top and is estimated to be around 2.3-3.5 million years old.
The Noordam is on the way to New Zealand's north island community of Napier.
