Wedding Bus RM 520 in Oxford Street on 25 July 1981.

RM 1060 at White City Station on what could well have been its penultimate day in service, 2 September 1982. After the next day two hundred RM`s were removed from schedules and, like this one, were destined for scrap. RM 1060 had been a Mortlake bus prior to transfer to Southall Garage. It used to look a lot better than it does here though by Southall Garage standards it is better than usual. The two radio aerial domes suggest a history of a bus not normally found on an outer suburban route. I`m trying to work out what the paint splats on the side advert are relevant to........

Not the prettiest backdrop to DMS 142 at the southern end of Minories near Aldgate on 24 October 1981.

A rather strange attempt was made by Streatham Garage to join the `showbus` ranks by restoring gold fleet names and numbers to RM 1376 and RM 1441 - the latter seen here at the southern end of Lambeth Bridge on 28 March 1981. For a bus just months out of overhaul it doesn`t look much like a showbus!

SMS 700 at Moorgate on 23 April 1981. The influx of new Leyland Nationals onto Red Arrow routes a couple of days later meant the end for many Merlins and Swifts - but not this one which lasted a little bit longer.

Ripple Road Barking - 26/10/1979

A rather scruffy RM 808 in London Road North Croydon on 14 April 1983. Quite unusual to have just one of the headllghts with a chrome trim.

DMS 2005 heading south over Waterloo Bridge on 8 December 1982.

Turnham Green Terrace just prior to the tube station on 27 October 1978. LS 224 is newly into service and like most of the batch allocated to the E3`s had to wait a while for the E to be added to the blinds.

RM 9 at Brent Cross Shopping Centre on 20 October 1979. I looked on Google for the opening date of the centre and it appears to be March 1976. i also looked at the excellent London Bus Route History web site and that seems to suggest that the 266`s were going into Brent Cross from January 1976.

Something is not right here! In early 1977 I was a conductor at Putney Garage and a schedule change with the loss of some duties created a surplus of conductors. Riverside Garage was short of conductors at that time so I volunteered to be loaned there. The plan was to put me on the 74B`s because of the familiarity with the 74`s at Putney. i said `no thanks`, i want to be on a different route. And in March 1977 I did several shifts on the 266`s. Two things stick in my mind. 1) it was the most manically busy outer suburban route and 2) we never went into Brent Cross because the bus station presumably wasn`t completed by then. West Hendon was the nearby terminus. Can anyone confirm when the bus station opened or when the 266`s started using it?

Eltham Well Hall Station - 18/8/1979

RML 2741 must have missed a scheduled full overhaul or perhaps received just a light overhaul as it is still carrying a BESI plate holder in this picture taken at the lower end of Haymarket on 4 August 1982. It would be a few more months before it received an overhaul so that would quite possibly make it the penultimate Routemaster in service with a remnant of the BESI system of vehicle location which ceased in 1976.

Logically any bus overhauled after that time had the holder removed but a rare oversight saw RM 1617 from Mortlake Garage overhauled without the holder being removed and the inevitable identity change saw that body emerge from Aldenham as RM 1563. Now I know that it`s often been said that this feature was restored when RM 1563 became the Mortlake Garage showbus but the truth really is that it was the one feature of retro appearance that we didn`t have to source and refit as it was already there and it then lasted until May 1984 when the bus was withdrawn.

RML 2741 has the oil staining on the front offside wing which was a feature of all Ash Grove Routemasters as careless, hurried oil filling on Leyland Nationals caused the spilt residue to contaminate the wash brushes which then deposited oil onto the front offside of the next bus to follow an LS through the wash.

Wallington High Street, 1985?

RM 1649 at Romford Market on 18 September 1982. The canopy number blind in the main number box is obviously out of need even if it doesn`t look right. But the thing I notice most is the sloppy filling of fuel and Tellus oil for the brakes and the resultant dirt film that is probably contaminating the wash brushes as well as creating a poor impression - which is further damaged by the wiper not being where it should be. I would guess that the fuel spill drain tube is probably blocked which wouldn`t go down well if the bus got picked for a random check....

Weekend road works within The City of London were commonplace to avoid the traffic mayhem that would result if done on weekdays. On Saturday 24 October 1981 I photographed several buses on diversion such as RM 2154 seen approaching Bank junction from Threadneedle Street due to the southbound closure of Princes Street.

York Way Kings Cross - 8/10/1983

M 100 was just a few weeks into service when I took this picture at New Ealing Hospital on 27 October 1979.

RM 1238 in Onslow Square, South Kensington on 30 July 1982. Looks like the radiator badge has been recently `removed`. Quite an unusual ultimate blind display.

A depressingly dirty DMS 713 at the bus stop on Wickham Lane across the road from the old Plumstead Garage on 29 October 1981. The recent implementation of the `fares fair` policy was well advertised on buses and in lowering bus and tube fares had quickly become popular. Except in the Borough of Bromley who would soon mount a legal challenge on the basis that they could not fully benefit from fare reductions subsidised from the then equivalent of council tax as no tube lines ran within the borough. The scheme was destined to end abruptly the following year.

Terminus Place, Victoria. 1987. Route 150 was introduced as a Sundays only tourist route on the 24 May 1987 linking Victoria with Aldgate via the Embankment, St Paul's and Tower Hill. The route didn't last long and was withdrawn on the 31 Aug 1987.

When I worked on the 9`s I would see ST 922 so often that it was almost a non-event to witness this fine old bus running on a tour route in the West End. It was fifty years old when I took this picture of it in The Strand on 25 July 1981. Out of regular service in London many years before Prince Marshall bought it and restored it for use on one of the many approved London Transport services that he and a selection of interesting buses were associated with.

RM 2151 at the lower end of The Haymarket on 4 August 1982. On the intermediate blind it`s Interesting that there is a full stop after the abbreviation of Circus whereas other routes with the same Cir abbreviation didn`t have that and other displays for route 15 around the same time have the full word Circus.

Forty four years ago today on 24 April 1981 RM 1978 is in Norton Folgate between Liverpool Street and Shoreditch on its way back to Dalston Garage after the morning peak. A journey probably made only once more later that day with the garage closing and being replaced by the new Ash Grove Garage for the following days run out.

RM 370 at London Road, Barking on 16 October 1978.

With so many postings of things Bristol at work recently, I thought I'd better restore some balance! With that in mind, here's a shot from 2013 when we'd just about finished our work on this ex London Transport AEC Merlin ... or Swift 691 if you prefer greater AEC accuracy.

The MCW bodied machine, VLW 444G, was seen outside for photos one glorious sunny day shortly before I drove it back to its new home south of the M25. Since 691 engines are a little difficult to get hold of, and the 760 is physically the same in terms of dimensions, this one has the latter. It was an immensely powerful bus and 1st and 2nd gears were practically redundant with its low speed town diff.

I reckon that MD 120 caught me by surprise in Vauxhall Bridge Road on 30 November 1979 as it was running out of service back to New Cross Garage.

DMS 1981 at Hainault Station on 26 January 1979.
