Where: Sweden, Östergötland, Bjärka säby. google maps
When: 20101129
How and why: The snow-filled tree and the twigs reaching for the moon. I tried it with both tree and moon in focus, but this way the moon seemed further away, which fit with my idea.

The title is a cheeky re-appropriation of the word “gay,” now that it’s become widely accepted slang for anything and everything uncool; and through that, a reflection on how queers have needed to constantly fight with language, appropriating and re-appropriating words in order to assert themselves at this very basic linguistic level. The exhibition assembles work that deals with the queer experience, and is knowing, assertive and even aggressive about it.

Yesterday I spent almost seven hours photographing four models who did an amazing job fulfilling my vision for an 1800's shoot. I ended up shooting with five different cameras while we were there - Three 35mm film, a Mamiya C330, and my digital Nikon.
My original vision for this black & white film project was to model the images after the work of Julia Margaret Cameron who was a wet plate collodion photographer in the mid-late nineteenth century. While I feel like I got similar images, I also decided to put my own twist and style into it - somewhat mixing modern with traditional.
Here is one of my favorite images of Valerie! Even through the laughter, the expressions that were captured were just what I was looking for!

Also, I want to give a big thanks to my brother-in-law's parents who let me take over their family farm (from the 1800s) for a day to shoot for this project! They've spent a lot of time and money renovating this house and it looks absolutely beautiful!
all my tropical plants are suffering from the bad weather during the last days. One thunderstorm after the other makes the pots and the garden to a pond, they need sun and not always water...

-- adjective
3. having or characterized by persistent or earnest desire: a longing look.
I've been longing for this kind of shot. Never had the chance, the time. And just when I saw that one chance, I grabbed that old and rusty camera and here it is, longing over.

We slept in and forgo(ed?) the gorgeous sunrise we saw as we were leaving our hotel. We started the journey back home to Washington (from Bend) and stopped at Smith Rock State park. The morning light was casting such a gorgeous glow we had to get in the scene.
I loved some of the signage that we came across such as, "Bitter Root Junction" and " Crooked River Ranch." I was really hoping for Clint Eastwood to come riding up and spit.
While the giant Murugan statue was impressive and the 272 stairs a rite of passage into the Cathedral Cave, it was the monkeys at the Batu Caves that stole the show. I could have spent all day photographing them; they were fascinating to watch.
I'm not quite sure how many live there, but they are clearly habituated to people. While I was busy photographing one monkey, another one snuck up behind me and stole the water bottle out of my camera bag. I'm glad it was only water and not my wide angle lens!
I was surprised to see how similar photographing monkeys was to photographing people. While dashing about, I was trying to compose particular shots while paying attention to the lighting, the catchlights in the monkeys' eyes and their expressions.
This particular monkey was taking a break away from the stairs. And while I don't remember exactly what he was looking at, there seems to be a sense of longing in his gaze. Whether it was for another monkey's pilfered food or a prime spot on the stairs, I'll never know.
It would have been nice to have a longer lens. Or one with a faster autofocus. But I've become so accustomed to the 85mm that it felt natural shooting monkeys with it. After all, they're a lot like people!

355/365 The Animal Care League was out in force at the sidewalk sale yesterday: lots of adorable kittens and puppies needing adoption, and lots of adoring children and grown-ups cooing over them. Hope some happy matches were made!
And happy cat (implied) bench monday to all!
I yearn for you
You long to get out
Your eyes are fixed on the morning skies
My heart rouses at your gentle touch
My dreams are filled with hopes of you
Your thoughts ruminate on plans and schemes
You're all I need
I'm not what you want
My beautiful cousin on the back of her house. I had such a nice time shooting her because I think she is one of the most beautiful people out there. More coming soon!
I do have to say that these lions have some of the best enclosures that I have seen - each being over an acre, with natural flora throughout. They also have these platforms that allow them a wonderful view of the area. This one reminded me of the wild lions in South Africa, sitting on top of Koppies, looking out over their world below.
