Garston Lock sits on the Kennet & Avon canal (or more correctly, the river Kennet navigation) just outside Reading. It was built around 1718 - 1723 by engineer John Hore of Newbury, and is now a scheduled ancient monument. Garston Lock is one of only two remaining turf-sided locks on the Kennet and Avon canal, the other being Monkey Marsh lock at Thatcham. Early locks were often turf-sided as they were quicker and cheaper to build than a full masonry construction, but were eventually superseded by brick sided locks, due to various problems with the turf-sided variety.

A locked portal is one of the oldest ways of keeping an area safe and secure. This lock has been guarding the north-east entrance to a silk factory long after it has been abandoned and forgotten.

The 'Top Lock' and canalside shop along the Grand Union Canal at Braunston, Northamptonshire. A shot I have done many times, but decided to take another as I was heading to the Marina, as the sun had just popped out, and I really liked the sky.
Sadly, I had little luck with the rest of my session, and mission was aborted.

I found this rusty lock on a chain that was wrapped around an elder tree at Parvin State Park. I don't know why the chain was around the tree.
It's hard to believe 513 has been around for over 16 years. It was easy to overlook, but I generally tried to see it when the opportunity presented itself and I tried to do something different.
On May 28, 2026, I swapped vehicles with my wife on Arsenal Island and timed it with BICR's passing over the Government Bridge. This view is from the riverbank on the Arsenal next to the historical marker for the first bridge across the Mississippi River, looking down Lock 15 at the swing-span. Hopefully we'll be able to see 513 cross the River again in the future.
South African cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) named "Roketi" now in training to be an Animal Ambassador at the San Diego Zoo. This 6 month old cub came from a litter of six at a zoo in Texas where she was not competing well with her 5 bigger brothers. Conservation status: vulnerable
We seem to find a lot of locked things in our travels out and about. This particular lock was on a utility type building at a community center where we ate our lunch. It was Sunday and all the buildings were locked but there were a couple of nice pavilions where the breeze cooled us a bit as we ate. Today we are headed out once more to see what we can see and hopefully some locks will be missing so we can peek inside! LOL
