We are finally in full-thaw mode now. Four straight days of warm temperatures; this photo is already obsolete. This is how winter ended.

"And every lock that ain't locked, when no one's around." Line from the song King of the Road by Roger Miller. I loved this song back in the day. And....now I know where there is a lock that ain't locked when no one's around! LOL www.youtube.com/watch?v=WrhAC0dFis0
An old lock keeper's cottage stands alongside the Caledonian Canal near Aberchalder in the Scottish Highlands.
I wandered up to the lock during my lunch hour to get a few autumnal views of the river. This is all owned by the National Trust which is good news as it stops the riverbank being developed.

"i held on to you for as long as i could
but today, you fell away.
now what i hold are the memories we barely made.
i stood on the edge of your bridge until i felt the rain;

These 2 juvenile herring gulls thrashed around like this for a good minute (which is a long time when you're trying to hold on to the other guy's beak!) until an
adult flew in and broke up the fight !
The old abandoned property behind our house still has a couple of outbuildings that are slowly deteriorating and this shed has become a shelter for someone in need of a place to stay.
The bottom lock at Braunston is part of the Braunston Lock Flight, a series of six locks on the Grand Union Canal in Braunston, Northamptonshire. These locks help boats navigate a 35-foot rise in elevation as they move between the lower and upper sections of the canal. The bottom lock is the first lock encountered when heading uphill toward Braunston Tunnel. It’s a busy spot, especially during summer, as Braunston is a major junction where the Grand Union and Oxford Canals meet. The lock is surrounded by charming countryside, making it a favourite among boaters and walkers.
