Instead of writing this terrible final Foundations of Political Theory paper on John Locke, I'm uploading a photo of a bike lock I took for next week's Mac Weekly. The irony is not lost on me that not only is this a photo of a Lock(e) but my entire paper is about the Lockian obsession with property rights. Are all American's unconcious Lockians, obsessed with material possessions and the protection of the right to say "this is mine, hands off" similiarly to the way I here am locking my bike?
I hope so, because that's my thesis.

This is a closer look into the north chamber of Enlarged Erie Canal Lock 23 (Alexander's Lock) in Rottedam,NY. This view is looking toward the east. Lock 23 was a double-chambered lock which was opened at the beginning of the 1842 navigation season, replacing the single-chamber Clinton's Ditch Lock 26 which was located nearby. The original locks had only one chamber for canal boats, the Enlarged Erie replaced these with double chambered locks allowing boats to pass in either direction at the same time. A last effort to expand the canal's capacity was made in the 1880s by extending one of the chambers of most of the locks in the system, including Lock 23, to accommodate double-headers ( two canal boats lashed together). In 1903 the State voted to replace the Enlarged Erie with the Barge Canal, which in this area utilized a sysytem of dams and locks on the Mohawk River. When the Barge Canal was completed in 1918, Lock 23 on the Enlarged Erie was abandoned. General Electric purchased the land from the state, then donated it to the Town of Rotterdam in the 1950's. By the 1990's the lock was almost completely obscured by overgrowth. In 1999 the faculty and students from Union College's Dept. of Civil Engineering worked on cleaning up the site and doing some reconstuction. The Mohawk-Hudson Bike Trail is built on the old towpath and passes right beside the lock. Lock 23 is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It's located at the intersection of Rice Road and Schermerhorn Road in Rotterdam,NY.
Something happened to my laptop lock and the combination I set stopped working. This happened while the laptop was locked to a desk. My red handled lock pick did a good job of unlocking my laptop.
I assume this huge chain on the Mississippi River levee has something to do with keeping the docks in place (where the Tom Sawyer and Becky Thatcher are docked).
Or perhaps someone chained up the Arch to avoid theft by tourists. Maybe Eero Saarinen.

This lock was filled in with the canal culverted to the other side of Greenhill Road. It is currently being excavated to be made into a car park for the almost renovated lock keeper’s cottage to the left.

There was a rollerblade ride and some of the people just carried their rollerblades to the meeting point, locked up their flipflops, put on their rollerblades and off they went.
Overlooked by Newark Castle is Newark Town Lock, on the then British Waterways Board manged River Trent, situated in the centre of Newark-on-Trent.

The weekend of 7 and 8 March 2015 was the last chance for the public to walk on the bottom of the new lock that will hold the title of largest one in the world.
Belgian graffiti artist Gunther Baeyens (a.k.a. Cazn) decorates one of the walls of the lock chamber with a 320m long and 9 meter high design inspired by the sea an the port.
Work should have started January 5th 2015 and be finished at the time of this event. Because of a problem with the delivery of special tape needed for the spraying, work was delayed by several weeks an therefore the artists are still at work.
With a length of 500m and a width of 68m the surface of this new lock is exactly the same as the present largest lock, the Berendrecht lock (also at the port of Antwerp) but this one will be able to handle vessels with a draught of 17.5m compared to 13,5 at the Berendrecht lock.
