When I’m out on a road trip, one of my musts is to send my daughters a postcard as soon as I enter a new state. I found this lovely locked mailbox in rural Phillipsburg, Missouri as I was looking for somewhere to mail postcards to my little girls. The actual lock is quite striking. Not your usual Masters lock.

Saint-Lambert Locks, St-Lawrence Seaway.

Écluses de Saint-Lambert, Voie Maritime du Fleuve Saint-Laurent.

The Saint-Lambert Locks are part of the St-Lawrence Seaway. They have also been an integral part of our lives for the past 47 years since the opening, to which I was present, in the Spring of 1959. We see the locks from the streets that border the St-Lawrence River and from the bridges that we use to go to Montréal. We see the huge ships that pass between Saint-Lambert and Montréal, travelling on their way to and from the Great Lakes and the Atlantic ocean.

There are three bridges linking Saint-Lambert and the city, Jacques-Cartier, Victoria and Champlain. Downtown Montréal is ten minutes away from Saint-Lambert via Victoria bridge that begins in the middle of our town. As people take this bridge, sometimes twice daily by car or by train, they pass directly over the locks.

Shortly before a ship arrives at the locks, an arm of the bridge closest to the ship is raised to let it inside while the other arm is lowered to let the diverted traffic pass. The locks' gates are closed and the water level is raised. When this is done, the traffic is again diverted, this time to the newly lowered branch of the bridge, while the other side is raised to let the ship pass.

Our region is known for its considerable cycling paths. An important link to the extensive network of South Shore and Montréal cycling paths runs over a highway, the locks and a short part of the river to reach the islands, then Montréal. When a ship must pass and the bridge is raised, people on foot or on their bicycles using the part of the path that is integrated to the bridge must wait, sometimes a long time, for the bridge to be lowered. Meanwhile, they enjoy the view!

This is an image I took in Alabama over a year ago. I didn't do anything with it because it was horribly exposed and thought it was useless. You can see the original in comments section. I took this and ran a single file conversion in photomatix and edited in photoshop. This is one other reason I love HDR. You have the ability to fix images that you thought might be useless. I guess a better way would be just to expose it right the first time. But that's to easy, right? I love places like this because it makes you wonder the history and what is so important to lock it up like this. The building was very old and very small. It might have held the holy grail.

These Columbian Black-Tailed Deer from California were really going at it when I got this shot. They were right in the middle of the rutting season here in California. There's nothing more exciting for me than to see these magnificent bucks in the wild so up close and personal. photo was taken near the American River.

The lock and keyhole on my grandmother's hat and shoe case. When she traveled by train she had 5 or 6 hats in the middle of this case, with at least 6 pairs of shoes in the pockets that line this round box. My mother kept knitting supplies in it, and now it is my office holding a sweater and similar things. I do not have the key.

Grade II listed, this unusual round building is a lock up. It had 1 cell approximately 4m in diameter, with a door on one side. What makes it particularly unusual is the domed roof surmounted by a cupola with ball finial. It was built in 1819 by the Earl of Shrewsbury to act as a temporary prison.

I love Sarah Dessen. I just finished reading Lock and Key, and I actually think I can finally say which one I love the most. :)

I'm not happy with the photos. I'm still experimenting. So better pictures coming soon (hopefully). (:

Sir Thomas Bodley, founder of the library, kept his belonging in this strongbox. This is the intricate lock in the lid.

Treasure behind the lock ...

Another picture from of my grandfather's tools. This was the lock he used on his beach shed. Not totally a "tool" I guess but you do need a lock & key to protect your tools. ;)

This is the general area where Enlarged Erie Canal Lock 27, Phillip's Lock, would have been located. It's buried with no stones exposed. If you walk west from the defunct Adirondack Power and Light Plant (now the Cranesville Block Co.) - following the power lines, you can see where the grade of the road rises. Then you come to a Terwilliger Creek ( the culvert allows Terwilliger Creek to pass under Route 5S and empty into the Mohawk River). Thats where the lock was, just before the creek. The lock abutted the culvert (near the left side) over the creek. It's filled in, there is a high tension tower right in the middle of the lock. ( I want to thank the Yahoo Erie Canal Group for the info on the location of this lock) ----- I found a little more info on the lock after doing a little checking - it was a double chamber lock, lengthened at the foot on the berme side with a 8.120 lift, west. This culvert is located on the south side of Route 5S in Pattersonville,NY

However beautiful and within reach a few opportunities might appear, certain doors always remain locked.

Grove Lock at Leighton Buzzard in Bedfordshire.

Went to Grove Lock to have a look around and get some tips for a forthcoming barge holiday, and met an old RAF colleague coming through on E=mc2, from our time at RAF Lyneham back in the 1990's!

It was great to reminisce over a beer before we all had to go our separate ways, two old Chiefs with our tales of old, a great way to spend an hour on a sunny afternoon.
