I love the view from the Loews Regency. This is a 7 shot panorama with my Nokton 17.5mm in portrait orientation. Each shot was also a Live Composite shot to let the traffic trails develop. Live Composite panos can turn out terrible if there are clouds, but it was a very clear night for this pano.

Star trail test olympus E-M10 ll , zuiko 17/1.8, 1450 scatti in Live Composite

My friend Claire told me about this location, but I couldn't make it last night. It probably was easier to shoot on a Saturday from the Astoria Boulevard subway station platform instead of on a weekday.

The light trails are a snap with the Olympus E-M5m2, but it's a bit of come down shooting a 16mp camera after using the Sony A7Rm2 for almost two weeks.

I love the way city streets glow from above at night.

Griffis Startrails (pano)

This one was a bit more technical than I've been doing recently. It's a 2 shot vertical panorama with the star trails blended in after stitching - 3 images in total. I just love this location, and I wanted to get a decent star trail image at my visit during the last new moon, but I'm also focusing on using my new lens, a short telephoto, in as many situations as possible to get the best feel for what I can accomplish with it.

Hardware: All images made with my Olympus OM-D e-M1.2 and m.Zuiko 25mm f1.2 Pro lens. The foreground and sky from the pano were exposed identically (25mm | f1.2 | 60s | ISO1600). The startrails in the sky were achieved using the Live Composite feature in my camera where it additively stacks images for as long as I want without over exposing (as long as my base exposure is calculated correctly). In this case, I let the camera run for a little over 2 hours with each composited exposure being 25mm | f1.2 | 15s | ISO1600.

Software: The complications came from blending all of this together, and this was a bit of a learning experience for me. All 3 of the foundational files were initially RAW processed in DxO PhotoLab 4 to get the most from the files out of the camera. I then stitched the panorama in On1 Photo RAW 2021 and worked that file to get for foreground and the trees the way I liked them. Once I was satisfied there, I added the star trail layer in On1. Working that complex tree line was a bit more tedious than I anticipated, but I'm reasonably happy with that result. I cropped the image as the alignment gave me a slightly ragged edge and processed the blended file in On1 to taste. When done, as is my usual practice, I roundtripped the image over to Nik Silver Efex Pro for a mono conversion and film emulation. When done, I felt the mono image spoke to me a bit more than color, so that is what you get here.

Any of my published images is usually done in 20-30 minutes of processing, but this one took me closer to 90. I hope I've learned something from this practice to shave that time down in future images! ;-)

This view is from the corner of Polk and Grove. Traffic was backed up on Polk, so I couldn't get smooth long light trails.

The beautiful Northern Spire Bridge in Sunderland. Shot using live composite mode to stop the shot when I had the light trails I wanted. Was a bit scary getting this shot, as the paved central part is quite small, wouldn’t do it again.

This is one of the more interesting subjects I've shot for my architectural star trail series. It's 15 Park Row or the Park Row Building, located just south of Brooklyn Bridge. It was completed in 1899 and was one of the first buildings called a skyscraper. It's a modest 391 feet tall by today's standards, but it was the tallest commercial building in the world for several years until surpassed by the Singer Building.

I spent about 45 minutes on the Manhattan bound platform of the Astoria Boulevard subway station taking shots of the roads leading to and around the RFK Bridge. The platform was mostly empty and the trains ran infrequently, so I was able to move around and use different primes with little interruption.

Trails of Geese

Between the skies getting washed out by a waxing crescent moon and the arrival of unforecast clouds, last night was a bit of a bust. I tried to make the most of it with this 20m star trail shot, but ended up wrapping up a couple hours early and getting more sleep than I planned. ;-)

Image made with my Olympus OM-D e-M1.2 and the m.Zuiko 12-40mm f2.8 Pro lens and NiSi Natural Night filter. Image processed in On1 Photo RAW 2020.

This is a 12 minute Live Composite exposure. A plane flew through at about 7 minutes, but I let the camera run a few more minutes anyway. I never tried cloning out a plane trail intersecting star trails, but it wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be. I haven't tried to replace the moving crane yet. That might not be as clean looking when done.

The first thunderstorm, in our area, of Spring 2016. The entire amount of time it took for these eight bolts to strike was about 45 seconds. It was nature's strobe light show; and it all happened on Easter!

Here's the latest in my architectural star trail series. There are some lights on at One57, but I don't believe it's finished yet. I wonder what that thing is on the top of the building.
