I hit the road with a new buddy I made on Instagram this morning. Last night we were trying to decide between one of the waterfall hikes in the Gorge or something else. We eventually settled on trying to locate a hidden lava tube near Carson, WA that we had both heard about and see photos of. After some back road adventuring and a quick quarter mile hike we found our hole in the ground and wandered in. Inside we found a huge, cavernous, cathedral shaped lava tube with striated walls and sections of floor alternating between high piles of boulder and smooth sand and cooled lava. We spent some time shooting long exposures, painting the walls with our headlamps. There's no darkness quite like being 1/4 mile under the surface of the earth and turning all your lights off.

A rare moment of stillness from Africa’s fastest land animal. This cheetah rests in the dappled shade of the Namibian savanna, its eyes calm but alert — a perfect embodiment of wild beauty and power in repose.

A rarely seen reverse view of the Instagram famous Buntzen Lake Boathouse. I just loved all the fog on the trees in the early morning light.

I loved the moody low hanging fog at Multnomah late Monday afternoon. It appears as if the falls are cascading out of thin air and adds a ton of monochromatic drama to an already postcard ready real life Rivendell. Hashtag alliteration. Who cares if it's overshot and crowded, it's beautiful and a must visit for all my out of town friends. And the peppermint hot chocolate from the lodge is on point.

Hand planted forests within the Mount Saint Helens blast zone. Huge swaths of the same species all planted at the same time in the mid-80s now look like vector fractals.

Just Above Ceiling Height

Looking barely down on a ceiling holding lamps in suspension is a perspective that gives a different view. Closing time leaves mostly darkness but they hadn't turned out these lights. The array forms a pattern that joins a ceiling sporting patterns of its own. Splashes of light illuminate just enough to show off details. Spots of other colors offer punctuation - a bit of added interest.

It's a diptych in appearance, even though it's been done in a single frame - either side could stand alone.

Beautiful yellow and orange maples contrasted over the multiple layers of green of the walls along the hike to Wahclella Falls. It's everything I love about the PNW all in one frame - conifers, autumn, fog, waterfalls, moss.

Time Keeps on Slipping

A bridge railing giving way to harsh weather loses its paint to the elements. Brilliant sun casts a diagonal shadow to give more drama to the strong colors. An hourglass of sorts - at least to my eye. I love finding little treasures in unexpected places and capturing them.
