I spent an hour this morning diving into my archives from my Arizona trip back in April. Looking at old photos with fresh eyes is a fun exercise and often leads to finding new gems. Like this photo I ended up falling in love with. Reminds me of one from Kevin Russ, one of my biggest influences.

Located near San Quirico d'Orcia in Tuscany

After 6 years of living in Oregon I finally got to see Crater Lake in February. We made it up just in time for sunrise. The snow was measured in tens of feet and I post holed over to the edge of the drop off just as the sun was peeking over the edge of the rim of the extinct volcano.

A rare moment of stillness from Africaโ€™s fastest land animal. This cheetah rests in the dappled shade of the Namibian savanna, its eyes calm but alert โ€” a perfect embodiment of wild beauty and power in repose.

Walk the Line

Geometry dominates. Rectangles collect colors to help define their existence. Pathways emerge. Light dances from human creations. Perspective is provided - just a bit by people passing through. ICM camouflages and lets imagination fill where altered reality hides specifics.

Multiple exposure plays a bit with reality and asks the eye to look closely to see what's happening. Bits and pieces make a whole. Nice drama with diagonal angles while strong vertical anchors hold things firm. Panels of muted color keep things simple. Altered reality creates interest.

A charming little A-frame on the waterfront of a small lake on the Olympic Peninsula. Basically - everything I want in life.

It's been dry this year. Everywhere west of the Rockies has been hurting for rain. This past weekend's torrential downpours were welcomed with open arms. And when they started to clear on Monday and Tuesday, the dense humidity held by these forests unleashed plume after plume of beautiful, smiling, fog. Foggy mountainsides are one of my favorite things to shoot, simply because of how quickly and dynamically they change, even over the course of a few seconds.

Millions of bats streaming across a sunlit sky are breathtaking to watch - and capture. The silhouetted palm is a perfect anchor against the moving tableau and the vastness of the universe. The mix of warm and cool, along with the implied diagonals, add energy to the scene. Colors define shapes that fit like puzzle pieces. Spatial relationships are clear.

Wondrous light streams into the dark temple highlighting him just so. Rich details emerge with light revealing just what's needed to tell the story. The muted color palatte adds warmth in monochrome tones which enhance the lines and shapes that make up the photograph. Negative space in the dark hue pushes him forward in the frame giving him the visual prominence he deserves.

Puddle Pedal

A parked bike shows off its silhouetted echo in rain soaked concrete. Circles duplicate and a bold vertical line anchors. Blue and gold hued concrete serves as negative space. Lines scramble a bit adding visual pathways and interest.

After being under a mountain of email all week, it sure was nice to get out and climb an actual mountain and see some more of the Columbia River Gorge yesterday. Selfie at Weisendanger Falls along Multnomah Creek!

The most Northwestern point of the contiguous lower 48 United States. I can't get enough of it.

Check out that storm brewing off the coast. A few minutes after I took this shot, that moved inland and unleashed one hell of a rainstorm for the entire rest of the evening. It was awesome.

A 5.5 mile hike into Washington's Northern Cascades. The trail is more creek bed than actual dirt path, with dozens of waterfalls pouring over top of the walkway. As you round the last bend and the lake finally comes into sight you stop dead in your tracks. The swirling cloud of fog, closing off the top of the amphitheater slowly drifts in and out of the trees that curtain the sides of the lake. At least 10 glacial waterfalls decorate the back wall of the lake, pouring down 1000' of cliff face before splashing into the still, crystal clear waters. This is how you fall in love with nature.

Ci sono poche cose che mi piacciono come l'autunno e i suoi colori. Oggi mentre stavo lavorando alla tesi ho scoperto un piccolo paradiso autunnale, non potevo non fermarmi per coglierne un pezzo.

Making Time to Play

Inside the Broad Museum, art plays with light and reflection to create its own shapes and delight, that catch my eye. Framed within a frame, the selfie is born. Wonderful, curved spaces repeat over and over forming patterns that morph across surfaces changing contour and size. Brilliant warm colors add to the sense of play. Diagonal cants add drama and fun - it's a bit of a party - a celebration of art and appreciation - something happening.
