Lunchtime on Day 3 of the GBRf 2018 charity railtour "Out of the Ordinary" and the train reached its northernmost calling point - Fort William. After a quick burger and a few pints in spoons for the passengers, Class 73/1, 73 141 "Charlotte", gets ready to bring up the rear of the tenth leg of the tour - 1Z31 Fort William to Inverkeithing Goods Loop via Glasgow Central Low Level, Mossend Yard and the Forth Bridge... as you do!
A new speed limit is in place on SR 9 in Clearview. This change comes following a traffic study conducted by WSDOT engineers. The existing 45mph speed zone beginning at SR 522 will be extending 2-miles further north to Cathcart Way. Although conditions dictate safe travel speeds, a consistent speed limit will help lower congestion on the highway and keep the roads safer for the traveling public.
Located a short distance from the city limits of Orangeburg, this old weathered structure once served as a hub of recreational and agricultural activity for the surrounding community. Located on property belonging to the Lee family, this land served as their farm which was productive in growing cotton, corn, sugarcane, grapes, pecans, as well as raising livestock. Family lore suggests that General Sherman used this property as a stopping point to camp on his march from Atlanta to Savannah, then to Columbia. A scuppernong (or muscadine) winery was active here, even during times of Prohibition.
The house was constructed between 1912-1920 and consists of around 6,800 square feet with an interesting layout. Downstairs, you enter into a small room which opens onto a massive central hallway bordered by rooms on either side. Each room has a screen door on it and all of the rooms connect on one side, but not the other. A small stairway exists in another room near the main entrance and opens onto a massive 3,400 square foot ballroom complete with dressing rooms, what looks to have been a bar or refreshments area and a stage for bands to perform.
An advertisement placed in The Times and Democrat on July 24, 1928 announces the grand opening of Pine Forest Lake on the following day. The pond adjoining the home, now covered in vegetation, was once a popular place for swimming, fishing, and boating. A large outdoor pavilion provided shelter and an area to picnic for the various potluck meals, barbecues, family gatherings, and social events. The pavilion was mentioned to be decorated differently for each holiday in keeping with the theme of the occasion. There was a white sandy beach which once surrounded the pond, which was known more widely as Lee’s Pond. Numerous newspaper advertisements announce events that were held here such as dances held by the Orangeburg Bachelors Club, Fourth of July celebrations, wedding receptions, and family gatherings, sometimes hosting more than 200 people at a time. Local judges, sheriff and mayor were large presences here for the events.
On the opening night celebration, Blue Steele, who was billed as the “King of Rhythm” and his Victor Recording Orchestra were the main entertainment. They played a combination of jazz and swing music. Numerous other popular bands of the time also performed here.
Two parlors on the main floor were said to be set aside for the use of card games. After sundown, patrons would make their way upstairs for dancing, refreshments, and music. There are stories of the Tuskegee Airmen being in attendance at events here. There are also rumors that this place also once served as a brothel, it is considered hearsay but many local residents have attested to it. I have personally found no information on that but that is not entirely surprising. The swimming hole as a public attraction existed at least until the 1960s but possibly further, hopefully someone can shed more light on that who perhaps visited themselves.
Today, the property still remains in the Lee family but is set to be auctioned off at the end of this month. I obtained permission from the realtor to access the property to take a look around before it sold.

My annual pilgrimage to the Edinburgh International Military Tattoo for 2018 celebrating 100 years of the RAF with a show called The Sky's the Limit. Fantastic display of music, dancing and lighting with added fun and fireworks as well.
The show is usually sold out every night but I definitely recommend trying to get along to one as they are quite something to behold.
Photographically it is always challenging with dark conditions, bright spot lights, sunsets, smoke and lots of fast movement but I think I'm getting the hang of it now. Hope you enjoy.

My grandfather served in the 331st Aerial Photo Lab and was stationed at the Pantanella Air Base near Gioia, Italy during World War II. He left behind boxes of photos like these, and now I'm trying to fill in the details. La construcción del Templo se inició en 1694 y fue construido fuera de los límites de la Ciudad a petición del maestro herrero y cohetero Juan Alonso Martínez Peredo. Una inscripción del templo indica que fue dedicado en 1722. La capilla lateral conserva sus excelentes yeserías sin pintar pero el interior fue totalmente transformado por una remodelación en 1922.
El Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe presenta una de las fachadas más representativas del llamado barroco poblano, caracterizado por el uso de azulejos y ladrillos en las portadas y las cúpulas. La fachada muestra en tableros de azulejos, escenas de las apariciones de la Virgen de Guadalupe y sobre el paramento, imágenes relativas a la Virgen María. El santuario es visitado anualmente durante la fiesta y feria que se organiza en el templo, por una cantidad considerable de personas venidas de todo el país. Frente al templo, se encuentra el Paseo Bravo, parque popular que funcionaba como espacio de recreo y esparcimiento y que marcaba los linderos de la ciudad hasta entrado el S. XIX.
La iglesia tiene una estructura de cruz latina con cúpula sin tambor. El imafronte del templo está decorado con azulejos en fajas horizontales en zigzag y sus basamentos están recubiertos de ladrillo, sobre los cuales resaltan tableros de azulejos. La fachada está flanqueada por dos torres esbeltas con los basamentos revestidos de azulejo y ladrillo que forman parte de la fachada. Las torres tienen tres cuerpos: los dos inferiores de columnas salomónicas y el último de columnas estípites. El primero es de planta cuadrada con frontones en su parte alta y los dos últimos ochavados. Los remates no son capulines sino que tienen forma de base de copa. La portada es de piedra con pilastras acanaladas, relieves en las enjutas, pináculos con bolas y dos ventanas al centro. Una balaustrada corona el conjunto típicamente barroco.
La capilla lateral, llamada de Dolores, es de planta cruciforme con brazos muy cortos y tiene, como las torres, columnas salomónicas. Hay varios relieves, sin pintar, lo que sugiere que no fue concluida. La cúpula es de gajos con linternilla pequeña visible solo en el exterior.
