I bought another Helios 44M-2 off fleabay and in the process of taking it apart to flip the front element, I discovered a lot of sand inside around the edges of the lens elements.
What you see is the result of quite a bit of frustration with the wrong tools and many many lens wipes!
A beach away from any tourist area in some kind of my favorite weather...
Taken in infrared using the Heliopan RG 715 filter.

Tim G and I have been lightpainting together for just over 10 years. One of the things that got us working together quite successfully was the experimental side of lightpainting. We were both relative novices at the craft and over the years, we've figured out how stuff is done between us.
Between us we used to marvel at others' lightpainting images and wonder how it was done. It was fun to figure out how and maybe add our own twist. I like to think that both Tim and I have developed distinct styles born out of this experimentation.
So when Tim and I get together, it's always a good night. This is an idea I've had in mind but it wasn't quite working. It takes another lightpainting brain to help realise the shot even if it's just lowering the tripod to make it work!
I'm not going to reveal how this was done. It's up to the viewer to decide how. But one thing I keep having to remind people is that this is shot in one photographic exposure and is not Photoshopped or even the result of generative AI! Just say no to AI!!!

Macro Mondays 'childhood toys'.
I don't have any of my childhood toys but 'Jacks' is a game I played a lot as a kid.
This image measures a maximum of 6 cm in width
Happy April Fools.
Acitrezza, Sicily, these photos are bizarre but not fake, just HDR'ed and lightpainted, with liberal use of Lee filters.
Macro Mondays 'goes together like..' theme.
A small strawberry sitting on a dollop of whipped double cream.
The strawberry measures 0.75" at the widest point.
After some time of relaxing on a quiet abandoned beach, here a beach hut study...
Again Heliopan RG 715 infrared filter in use (and color overlay).
For me, the result looks a bit like one of these film production studio shots - but it is a real beach. No beach life weather, of course...
Bigger size is maybe worth a look ... here.
A single , lightpainted cross beneath a starfilled sky. The man who fell to earth is returning home. We are all made of stars. RIP David Bowie.
Macro Mondays 'brew' theme.
I don't drink normal black tea or coffee but do enjoy herbal and fruit teas - varieties of rooibos and white teas being among my favourites. For this week's MM theme I've chosen a grapefruit pyramid tea bag and a few chamomile flowers.
The image measures approx 5 cm in width
My 'brew' each morning helps to get me going!

An example of what an extra pair of eyes can achieve with lining up a lightpainting image. It was good to meet up again with Tim G and the uber accurate alignment which ensued. Top night as ever!
I captured this image in the pre-dawn twilight/ early "blue hour" in the Lassen County California high desert. The image features an old abandoned small structure (I’m told it may have been a cowboy line shack) under the stars. Just above the ridgeline to the left of the building you can see the triple planet rise of, Venus, Saturn, and Mars, left to right. Just in the frame to the right of the building you can see the constellation Scorpius.
I created the image by shooting multiple sky images and “stacking” them to reduce the digital “noise” that results when shooting at very his ISO sensitivity to expose the stars. I then blended the sky image to several frames in which I “lightpainted” the building with a hand held flashlight.
As we wandered down this lane in the dark to get further in to Sherwood Forest, a bank of fog rolled in. It would have been rude not to do a quick run and gun photo taking advantage of the epic atmosphere created by the mist.
I slipped away for the weekend with fellow photographer Miguel, bound for the Eastern Sierras. On past visits to this site at Lake Crowley in Mono County, I was determined to come back with enough equipment to light the structure for a multi-image composite.
The original plan was to set up a camera on a tripod some 30 ft out in the lake, sandbagged and aimed back toward shore...BUT, the high winds were not only generating crashing surf, the waves even had curls as they broke on the rocky beach. My gear was certainly drenched, as was I, after only a few minutes.
I switched to a composition near the water's edge and set the camera to take 20 sec exposures while I walked the exterior and interior of the structure, carefully light painting small sections at a time. Because this required crawling as far back into the caves as possible in total darkness before turning on the light, my forehead and hair met dozens of bats and mud swallows that were convinced they'd be getting a full night's sleep. ewww.
In all, this is a composite of some 50+ separate frames, blended together for the final result.
Lens is the DFA 35mm f/3.5 on the 645Z. Fairly heavy-handed processing applied.
More about the location. A prehistoric volcanic event caused the formation of this spectacular colonnade of mineral deposits over 760,000 years ago, which is slowly being exposed as moving water erodes the surrounding ash tuff. Lake Crowley in Mono County, California.
I can assure you, the hardest part was the hike back up to the truck with all the extra gear...and that was only our first stop of the night, lol.
Last night at Magpie Mine, four lightpainting photographers got together, one of which had travelled all the way from Australia.
I've shot this scene before with pretty much the same lighting so it was good to have a Master Orb Spinner to create the orb instead of me with my three left feet and less than perfect circles!
This shot was pretty easy for me; all I did was point and shoot. Phil stumbled around in the dark waving an LED panel during the exposure trying to avoid death trap holes on the hilly landscape. Meanwhile, Denis, the master orb spinner, spun his orb and counted to 90 seconds.
It was good to witness another lightpainter at work and an absolute pleasure to meet Denis and catch up with Phil and Tim.
FYI, this circular structure was a gunpowder store located about 60 metres away from Magpie Mine.
Lightpainting shot in one photographic exposure as usual with none of that AI shenanigans!
It was a Saturday night, I'd had sore knees after a week of being a wage slave but I was determined to get out in the dark to shoot something! I kept an eye open for the weather forecast noticing that Padley Gorge was forecast to be misty from 9pm.
All my usual lightpainting partners in crime were busy so off I went with a bag full of gear and optimism to Padley.
For this shot, I set up an RGB LED panel on a light stand behind me and wore a head torch with an orange filter attached. I set the camera down low for the perspective trick and shot many versions with different colour combinations.
I would have carried on but unfortunately rain stopped play meaning this grumpy old troll had to walk back to the car in a huff!
I'll be back!

2024 has been a horrible year for me. So if it could be arranged for me to be abducted by aliens and taken to another planet that would be appreciated, thank you!
I thought I'd successfully kicked the habit until my pal gave me a massive jar of them yesterday.
These little beauties look and smell delicious, I'm hooked again. Bugger !

The Maiden and the Way
Another from my recent night at Griffis Sculpture Park in Western NY.
Hardware: Olympus OM-D e-M1.2 with the m.Zuiko 8mm f1.8 Fisheye Pro lens. Composite of the foreground (ISO1600 | 40s | f1.8) lightpainted and 20 frames (ISO6400 | 8s | f1.8) - 15 light and 5 dark.
Software: Everything was initially processed in DxO PhotoLab 4. The 20 sky frames were sent to StarryLandscapeStacker for it's special magic. Then I blended the stacked composite with the foreground in On1 Photo RAW 2021.5
