Late yesterday Matt Strait and I met up and made a mad dash to Joshua Tree National Park. We departed around 6:00pm and after wolfing down some grub in town, entered the park at around 8:00pm whereupon we were advised at the entrance shack that the only sites available are in the back of the park. We had every intention of shooting the arch and monolith rock and weren't worried about camping over but we did bring the gear to do so. When we arrived in the campground we soon learned that a Meteor shower was to be peaking that night, and the campground was a madhouse. At times there was a continuos parade of cars circling the campground. As always, in spite of the madhouse effect, We did manage to grab our own site based on a technicality.
Soon after we arrived here at the arch, another photographer approached to shoot the arch as well. Matt and I chatted with him awhile and after showing him some sample shots of my work, and some other photographers shots of the Ancient Juniper since I had no connection on my cellphone and couldn't show him mine, He then proceeded to tell us about this awesome nightscape photographer on Flickr named Wayne Pinkston. I immediately told him about the time I spent with Wayne in Utah and the guy was blown away. Wayne is a lot more famous than he realizes or is to humble to admit. I informed him that I was gearing up to teach workshops and showed him what I had to offer and he said he would be very interested in taking one of my nightscape/processing workshops. I'm hoping I can generate enough interest in my nightscape photography to start teaching what I have learned over the last 2 years. Maybe after some time teaching I will be able to afford a full frame camera and lens specifically for night photography. :)

After being in Tasmania for 10 days and nights we had a starry sky to shoot for a few hours
We arrived here about 11pm after capturing the sunset at Binalong Bay
I got up at 3am to capture this as I needed to wait for the Milkyway to position itself east/west over the Eddystone Point Lighthouse in the Bay of Fires .
There was suppose to be low level Aurora activity most of that week
I used the parking lights on my car to light the lighthouse
I probably should have still lightpainted the immediate foreground
The grounds here were full of wildlife including several wombats feeding on the fresh grass shoots
I went back for a quick sleep before sunrise only to wake to a windy and wet change , so I just got these shots

Acitrezza, Sicily, these photos are bizarre but not fake, just HDR'ed and lightpainted, with liberal use of Lee filters.
An old brick building in Hearne, TX. Not sure what this old building was used for. Peeking inside the building, the second floor had collapsed down to the first floor, so it was hard to tell what this building may have been used for. This image was made from several images. One exposure for the sky, and then several exposures for light painting the building and foreground,

During 2022, I've been a little obsessed with this tilt and pan lightpainting technique.
This is maybe the cleanest result I got so far. Basically the shot involves tilting the camera to a pre-determined angle and filling the background lighting with flash and smoke. Then, at the end of the exposure, the model turns on the flashlight while I simultaneously pan the camera across the frame.
The trick is to stop the panning so the light ends within the frame. It's a two handed job and you have to be quick with the lens cap!
Milky way near Brinkly. South Australia
10 lightpainted shots of the vehicle
30 seconds each at ISO 320 f/8.0
I had set up the Star tracker right behind the vehicle.
After lightpainting the vehicle I took a single exposure of 60 seconds, in the same direction, at ISO 800 f/2.8.
I applied some star reduction in Photoshop.
The two. images blended together.
I know, people, the oil can doesn't make sense in the comp since it wouldn't have been used in building a birdhouse, but I found it in the back of the tool cabinet and I like it, so I just had to include it. Given that circumstance, I think it makes a good subject for the 52 Weeks of 2016 "Round Peg in a Square Hole" theme.
