Home and somewhat settled at last! :-)

What a trip!!! 12 Days of travel and 5146 Miles across the southwestern United States! Including the states of Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado, Utah, Arizona, Nevada, and California! But even 12 days was barely enough time to make it to only the major sites along the way.

This shot was taken the night of our first stop in Arches National Park near Moab, Utah. This is on the eastern side of Utah near the Utah / Colorado border and is sort of a warm up collaboration between John (jah~) and I. I had picked up John at his place near Denver earlier in the day and this is where we ended up after a beautiful drive through the Rocky Mountains.

I know, so where are the arches!?! Ha! Well, there is actually one in the rock formation that is second from the left side of the photo it just cannot be seen from this angle. There are also a few more directly behind the camera. This park is suppose to have over 2 thousand stone arches. It is definitely a gorgeous place to visit! Both Day AND Night! :-)

I was running a time lapse camera on the dash of my truck for most of the trip and with all of the photos from it and from my Nikon, I have about 28 thousand photos to deal with! Of course, most of those are for the time lapse but it will still take a while to go through them all. ;-)

More to come! :-)

Light Painting - Single Exposure

Playing around a bit more with the Programmable RGB LED Orb Tool tonight. I said it has a 2 million color range... but the colors on the dark end of the scale really do not stand out very much at all. I suppose they would work okay with a higher ISO, but then they would just be... well, brighter! :-) So maybe I better scale that statement back a bit. Probably more like 1 Million usable colors! Think I should toss it!?

Is there anyone that would like to see a photo of the tool itself? Or how about a tutorial on how to make one!?

Light Painting - Single Exposure

The tutorial to make one of these tools is located HERE

Same old location, but under the watchful eyes of my Padawan who came along to see how I do what I do. Funnily enough he took to it like a duck on water and even had a home made orb tool. Felt really cool being asked if they could come along, especially as he travelled a good 30 miles into the Welsh hills to meetup! I felt like Yoda for a few hours lol

On another note, I've manged to sell some of my work to an American book publishing company! They approached me last week!!!! How cool is that? Must be doing something right for a change.

Taken Monday at Moore Camera Club, first time I’d done any photography using lights and long exposure, learnt a lot that night, definitely will be experimenting with more of this type of photography, thanks Ken Blease for doing all the hard work too with all the swinging around.

Dear friends, light painters and photographers!

It's almost time to celebrate! Only about 130 clicks are missing and I am too impatient to just wait or post some other pictures. So I have decided to post my "jubilee picture" right now and I hope and think, with this picture it shouldn't take too long to reach the 50.000 clicks of my flickr stream. So please help! And ...

What could be better than 5 light orbs to celebrate 50.000 clicks on flickr? :-)

Many, many thanks for all your previous visits of my pictures and interest in my flickr stream! I hope you will come back from time to time in the future. Although there's not so much going on here at the moment.

This picture is a corporate work of David Kracht and me. It would have been almost impossible or at least much more difficult and dangerous for me to do it alone and with my own camera. Together this was real fun - I hope not only for me. ;-) We should repeat this soon, Dave! Where to go next?

More pictures of this location will follow. Not yet. But some day.

UPDATE: You did it! THANKS!

Creating this orb was great fun. I took this on Saturday night whilst out with Rob Pickstone and Jed Wootten. There were a few people milling around at this point and we get quite a few odd looks.

This is definitely one of my better orbs, its just a shame the foreground isn't lit a bit more and that the light on the bridge was so bright.

I would welcome your comments, positive or constructive.

Another attempt in creating a light orb... still imperfect.

Just arrived back from fiji and here are a few SOOC (Straight Out Of Camera) shots I took while i was there. There's a few still to come that I would like to do some work to!

Please feel free to comment and tell me what you think or what could change!

Few more from out trek downtown.

Well there I was sat infront of a lovely roaring fire, having just finished a pizza hut when I got called out to work, so never one to miss an opportunity I grabbed my gear as I had clocked this bridge when driving home from there the other week.... I'm very please I did. I think I've found a new place!!

I don't really have a lot to save. I kind of feel like I wasted my time today doing this rather than doing my homework.

I got to get me a black balaclava and some gloves. Ran out of time to fiddle with the RAW file, so this is the jpeg straight out of the cam. Still can't get the orb in the middle of the wool circle :)

One of a group of reflection shots i took at an old sand quarry, spun by me

Colour cycling LEDs, cold cathode el-wire and a muckle bright torch with orange gel for the backlighting

Just playing around some orbs.

WHEW!!! WHAT A DAY!!! WHAT A WEEK!!!

First thing this morning I was contacted by www.diyphotography.net/ about writing an Article for them on the new Programmable RGB LED Orb Tool Tutorial! So... In a scramble, I have been working on getting the tutorial spruced up a bit with more detailed photos and some added text, along with writing the article for them and getting it sent off to them! And to top it off, it will be featured on the Hack A Day website as well! ;-) So... I have totally set myself up to be contacted from all over the world again with all sorts of questions about it. Hopefully I can keep up with it all! ;-)

In the midst of it all, I had a great conversation with my friend and fellow Light Painter from San Francisco, Julian Cash! He is the founder of The Aurora Light Painters that were featured on America's Got Talent last week performing Light Painting in front of MILLIONS of people and is a really awesome person! I am so excited for all of them! The audience and judges LOVED what they did and they were voted to "GO TO VEGAS!!!" :-)

Julian is one of the most energetic and positive people I have had the pleasure of meeting and I can't wait to see what they come up with in their next act on AGT!! It is an awesome time to be involved in Light Painting! Wooo Hooo!! It has really been SOME week!

I have also pretty much had it with flickr group that I have been involved with fairly heavily for quite a while. The negativity in there along with the childish bickering is just a bit too much to take any longer. So I have decided to start another group and enforce some general behavior rules! So, if you are tired of the crap, and want to be involved with a positive group that is all about light painting of all types, then feel free to join in! :-) The new Group is called Light Painting Community! Just agree to a few simple rules and that is it! :-) I just know that I can't be only one that is tired of the crap. Life is too damn short for it! :-)

Now, in the midst of all of this, I have had to put my LightPaintingTools.com website on hold for a little bit. :-( I am not shutting it down completely, but it just has not taken off as quickly as I had hoped and I need to focus my attention on finding employment. :-) So... if anyone knows of a company that might be looking for someone with my skills and talents, then please send me an email. :-)

Okay... so in trying to think of something unique to use the Programmable RGB LED Orb Tool for, I reprogrammed it today and came up with this! While I was thinking about doing this, it reminded me of a song that I love to play on my Ukulele and sing as well. It is by Israel "IZ" Kamakawiwo'ole and it is his version of the song "Somewhere Over the Rainbow". This video is a tribute to IZ after his death in 1997. A sad loss of a gentle giant but his music will live forever!

Light Painting - Single Exposure

A light orb along with some light painting done on Dents Run covered bridge in Monongalia county, WV

we are working on making a plasma looking orb.

What do you think about that? My first pseudo HDR of a light painting shot.

Because it's made of a JPG, quality is not the best. But I really like it and I think I will use raw format from now on. At least sometimes. :-)

I've wanted to try this for a while, but only recently got round to looking into it properly.

So after finding a suitable light source (a battery powered set of LED fairy lights) and modified them, this was my first attempt.

I think it worked quite well, but I need to a) do it when it's not so windy, b) perfect my spinning technique and c) find a better/darker location (although this isn't bad for 5mins walk from my door).

Info :- one shot at iso 160 f5.6 177 seconds for the light painting & an extra one at iso 800 25 seconds for the foreground rocks.

Whoops! A little bit blown out with the highlights! I could have used Photoshop to change the levels, but I want to show this expsoure in its raw state as it was captured. The only 'Photoshopping' was to resize from the large RAW pic and a watermark.

If I remember rightly I lost track of where I had already been and ended up going around again! It's given me a very precise orb though! Starting to love these now :)

Tried experimenting with a different way tonight! Trying to give it a 'signature' look and feel, much easier on the arms this way as well.

Where does time go? I find it hard to believe that it has been two years already since my trip to Alaska. So many Images from this trip I haven't shared, and nice to be able to return to my Lightroom catalogs to re-live the memories from this trip and look back on all the other cool places I have visited. Here is an image of an LED orb and somewhat of a self portrait of me creating it. These kind of images are always fun to shoot.

Blackpool Northbeach sea defences. Lots of spray in the air, hence the blue haze around the orb. It was also very windy, the camera got blown over but survived with only a cracked UV filter and a minor dent on the lens.

I slightly tweaked the colour during RAW conversion, so not really able to claim SOOC for this one.

Orbs may be old school, but domes are quite the new school in lightpainting, well they are for me anyway ;-))

A bit of a different angle to my previous post & a touch darker too, trying to bring out the light detail emminating from behind the lighthouse...
