Ooops, left my head torch on. on balance it works though.

... in the carpenter's shop. With nice white decoration.

For a change: Some old lightpainting stuff - again. ;-)

Last night I finally found the time to try something new. A 360° light orb panorama. By doing so I had to fight against an old, long-forgotten problem: A lime limitation of at most 60 seconds. And I found a new challenge: Using an aperture of f/2.0 for lightpainting.

Here you can see the first result. A single shot directly out of camera without postprocessing. I have only used Hugin to shift the equirectangular picture horizontally.

Also check out the picture as a whole which I like most. And here you can find a VR viewer much better/sharper than that of flickr! But still with the wrong projection.

Stay tuned if you want to see more... :o)

Taken during a trip to Tregantle Beach with Dan Sharp last weekend. One of my better orbs so far.

I welcome your comments, both positive and constructive.

I got a lot of odd looks doing this one...

The silhouette of Mark makes this orb look huge!

Me and a mate did a bit of urban exploring and found a disused mental hospital, we found this big room so i thought id have a go at doing an orb in the room. Strobist info: Lit the room with a metz 36-af80 in the room at the back on the left and flashed it into the room from one of the corners of the room

In an attempt to replicate those swirly ribbon things coming out of the orb, like { tcb } does. After a couple of attempts, I ran out of breath.

Under a rising full moon, the garden orb moves down the path.

Not Photoshopped, just a long orb exposure.

After some weeks of abstinence in photography and light painting I am back with three shots from the water tower in Neu-Ulm that I took this night.

This is my first attempt of a broken orb. I hope you like it although it's not really open.

This picture has been taken in one shot. Colours have been adjusted using GIMP but no pixels have been added or removed.

Quick adventure Ive been scooping out this abandon warehouse just shy of sellwood. Rumor has that this place burnt to the ground in the early 1900s killing over 100 people in the process.

As I marked this spot on my Photo pill over 2 weeks ago I finally got the courage to hop over the No Trespassing gate only to start to get set up only to find a city truck parked just out of site so I could finish this one orb. Construction on the new building was starting so hopping I can go back tonight and get more! Hella creepy tho years of homeless, drifters, those alike seeking refuge here.

With the snow all melting this evening I nipped out for a quick bit of light painting. The orb isnt perfect but I quite like the imperfection. I was literally on the edge of the riverbank for this one, so spinning around was limited.

We are proud to be a part of the first light painting Guinness World Records title! Last summer, Johnny traveled to Virginia with eleven other light painters from all over the country. The group met to attempt setting a Guinness World Record for most light painted orbs in a photo. This past week, we received the official word that we GOT THE RECORD TITLE - 200 ORBS! Check out 200orbs.com!" for more info and an awesome BTS video.

Playing with steel wool! 🔥

All photography is about capturing light in an image but night photogs seek something a little more difficult than simple point and shoot photogs. Night photography is about either capturing exisiting light conditions through a long exposure or about introducing a light source into the dark to be captured as an image.

I remember trying to shoot images during blue hour and beyond back in the days of film. Invariably, the results were blurred images without much or any aesthetic value. Shooting in the dark was the preserve of pros and serious amateurs with fancy equipment and top shelf film. That all changed with the invention and proliferation of the digital sensor camera.

Suddenly amateurs were free to experiment until their hearts were content and the feedback on our efforts was immediate. This allowed us to play with our variables on the spot to get as close to our ideal as possible. In the realm of night images, millions of amazing images began to appear on the internet as pros and amateurs alike began to experiment with the power of the digital image. Star trails began to be put together as photo stacks rather than the single long exposure once employed by film photogs. People, fascinated by images they could create by controlling light, began to emerge as specialists in the subject and they shared their techniques in ways that anyone interested could get their head around. People even began to specialize in creating and adapting light sources for creating unique night images.

This "steel wool fire poi" light orb is made by placing 000 steel wool in a whisk, on a dog leash, that is spun in a vertical (relatively speaking) circle by hand whilst rotating my body around a single axis point, is a crude example of night photography that one can capture with a little patience and research. Far better and more complex examples of this particular technique can be found on the internet and here on flickr.

Star trails, light orbs, nightscapes that captures ambient light spilling from buildings, and images shot in the dark by candle or fire light are all other examples of night photography that come to mind. Night photography has been one of the most challenging and inspiring types of photography I have gotten into since getting my first dslr. My earliest experiments with this particular genre of photography go back to my d40 and trying to capture the nothern lights in bitterly freezing temperature in the arctic while I was living up there; in what seems a life time ago to me now. I love to look at images shot at night and enjoy the challenge of capturing them myself. I believe I have learned more about controlling my camera from shooting in the dark than from any other exercise I have engaged in to capture images and I will probably continue to enjoy shooting at night for many more years to come.

Adding this to odc -fringe as night photography was once a preserve for a small fringe group of photogs. It also qualifies for slider sunday as I played with the levels and sharpness a bit in post.

Well its been a while, and I go and choose one of the coldest nights for a longtime to head to the beach for a spin, but it was worth it. The moon was bright and the sky clear so it made for ideal conditions. Bit of a messy orb but its been a while since a chucked one!! Three pops of 1/2 power flash @24mm against the break waters. About a 3 minute exposure at f6.3 ISO 200.

First LP session with the new camera and all looks good to me!

The orbs aren't photoshopped - they're real light orbs from sunflare shining in the phone box. (Only colour, sharpness and contrast was played with in post production.) Perhaps my model really is Superman :)

Click on the photo to see the large version. The Milky Way appeared as the orb hovered over the dunes at Rincon Point, California. Not Photoshopped. Simply a long exposure, long enough to capture the orbs when they come out at night. Star trails are visible in the sky.

First attempt at doing light orbs with my photog buddy Paige around Lake Eola. Had a great time and scored access to a roof top of a condo over the lake! Will share those photos later ;)

A first test of a new LED string that I knocked up earlier this week. I went down to Steetley beach @ Hartlepool with Bry & Ivor tonight & we battled the light polution again :-))

Wet feet were order of the day to get this shot in amongst the advancing waves LOL :-)

Cheers to Bry & Ivor for the company :-)

Natural orbs, captured on the beach at low tide. These orbs are not Photoshop artifacts.

A brief trip to the beach last night under a super bright full moon and clear skies. Had about an hour down there finding my feet again. Light painting seems to be coming back to me now.

Bit annoyed with myself for not using a warmer torch for lighting up the shadow side of the tree trunk... But what the hell.

(taken on one exposure, no additions after the exposure. I will adjust levels, saturation, white balance, brightness and some minor cropping if required.)

In the blue hour... I hung around in the pine woods after I had finished shooting the beach huts at Wells-next-the-sea. I set up my flash to give a bit of interest to foreground too.

STROBIST

SB-700 camera left full power 24mm. Fired via Nikon CLS at the start of the exposure.

Took a visit to Dolbadarn Castle in Llanberis last night. The amount of tourists that visit Llanberis and miss this castle is crazy! It's like a hidden little gem.

With a rather large nod of thanks in the direction of Poole-Shooter Cindi's find your place in the sun for the inspiration.

Bit of light painting at cod beck reservoir. Best orb spun to date

An improvement on previous efforts. Needs a bit more though. It's seriously foggy here tonight, so maybe foggy crosshatched orbs will be the thing to try.

more orb practice 😊 one day I will perfect this!

My friend spun this one.

Managed to squeeze in a quick half hour at the beach. This was about the best shot out of the 5 I managed. Lit from camera left for the front light on the groynes and from camera right for the sea defences in the background. All with the trusty Lenser T7.
