I was originally asked by to take part in an exhibition curated by Nike, celebrating BMX making it to the Olympics for the first time in history, with a selection of artists who share the common bond of BMX as an early inspiration. Nike collaborated with Bob Haro on the uniforms for the riders, but also in the canvas for the show which was one of Haro's original lightning bolt number-plates.

The show opened in Beijing for the Olympic games, was part of the Beautiful Losers exhibition in Tokyo and is now in LA for the final show.

The artworks were all auctioned off in public to generate funding and awareness for The Athlete Recovery Fund. The other 30 artists include some great creators, some people that really influenced me at an early age, Bob Haro,Andy Jenkins, Mark Lewman, John Martin, Kevin Wilkins, Todd Bratrud, Yogi Proctor, Michael Leon, Dave Fox, Nick Phillip, Jeff Tremaine, Gork Barrette,Michael Lau, Rich Hansen, Joe Polevy, Ronnie Bonner, Norman Chuck, Dave Ortiz, Andy Mueller, Greg Higgins and David Slade.

Lightning bolt over Brooklyn NYC

*** EXCLUSIVE ***

JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA - FEBRUARY 10: Lightning bolts illuminate the sky in a near-Biblical scene, in a composite image made of dozens of photographs, on February 10, 2015, in Johannesburg, South Africa.

ILLUMINATING the night sky these stunning pictures show hundreds of lightning bolts in full force. Alexius van der Westhuizen, a 46-year-old real-estate agent, captured the dramatic thunderstorm over the skies of Johannesburg, South Africa. Each picture is a composition of dozens of images taken during three-hour sessions over the course of the summer. Lightning strikes are layered over each other to give the impression the sky is erupting with dozens of bolts at once.

18.7.14 - Thunder and Lightning Storm. Full shot. Taken in my back garden.

Taken looking south over Naperville, IL.

Playing around with the Randonautica app again. It took me to this building across the street from my old apartment, which wasn't super exciting since I used to live in my old apartment and so had been to this neighborhood many times, but they *did* rehab this building so it's all new and fancy with lightning bolts and a fresh coat of paint, so that's cool.

I love Thunder and Lightning and spent ages, leaning out the window, trying to be fast enough on the trigger to capture it!!! Just made it!!

This lightning bolt was captured near my home. With the right techniques, it's quite easy to photograph lightning. Click on the prior link for more information.

Observing a nice thunderstorm from by Fowler Creek Park in San Jose, CA on St. Patrick's Day. A relatively close lightning strike was captured here. Gotta love t-storms! It's uncommon to have this weather here. This interesting weather was thanks to a low pressure area that was slowly moving southeastward along the coast, into the state, ushering in an unstable air mass aloft. Certainly, the storm door had finally opened this month for the Bay Area which we've been anxiously waiting for so very long! (Tuesday, March 17, 2020)

*Weather scenario/update:

Widespread rain had soaked the Bay Area over the weekend as the most significant precip the region has seen in 6 weeks finally arrived. Showery conditions were to persist until Wednesday & after a brief lull, another storm was in the forecast for next weekend. "The storm door opened and it’s going to remain open," said Matt Mehle, a forecaster with the NWS Bay Area office. The cold front that had hit the Bay Area over the weekend was associated with a low pressure area offshore. On this day, on St. Patrick’s Day, the low had inched southeast ushering in an unstable air mass over our region behind the cold front, ushering in showers & t-storms. Severe weather such as small hail & t-storms have occurred this afternoon especially around the South Bay. Hail, thunder, lightning & heavy downpours were all observed around my area. The rain (and snow) was a welcomed sight as the region didn't see any throughout the entire month of February. Despite the recent rains, we were still well-below average, with most locations ranging from 40-50% of normal... Recently, we have received more rainfall in most locations than we did in the last month & a half! That goes to show how dry we were... Anyway, stay safe out there during this coronavirus pandemic!

Taken from North Oxfordshire, UK with a Canon 1100D with 18-55mm kit lens. Short video clips were shot. If the video that had a lightning bolt in it I extracted all of the frames from it using PIPP. The frame that had the lightning flash in it was then processed in Lightroom. The rain during this brief but intense thunder storm was torrential and I ended up drenched to the skin, but it was worth it!

I have been playing with all kinds of funky film lately and have had some really fun results. This particular roll of film is made by Revolog (I purchased it through the Lomography website). It's called Tesla 1 and here's the description from the film canister:

"The blueish flash is best visible on darker parts of the image, not as good on lighter parts of the picture. The flash can appear in any part of the film."

One of my sons is really, really into Electro (from The Amazing Spider Man 2) so part of the roll was devoted to him showing off his awesome electrical powers. Other shots show one of my other sons with his "Evil Face." (His words, not mine.) And one other shot is simply a really large power line tower. I just thought it would make a cool shot.

I have already loaded another roll of Revolog. This time it's Tesla 2: red flashes instead of blueish. I'm excited to see what shows up on my film this round.

This shot was taken on a Canon EOS Rebel with an EF 35-80mm Canon Zoom Lens.

In my opinion there is nothing more beautiful than a bolt of lightning shooting across the sky--ok, I can think of one thing that's more beautiful, but that's beside the point.

Despite being a completely natural phenomenon, there is just something otherworldly about the way light can dance through the sky without a care for the land below.

Ever since I picked up my camera almost two years ago I've wanted to capture this particular piece of nature, and this is the first time I've done so successfully.
