I smelled smoke as I exited my house (at left) and thought someone was burning salty oak trees. I looked all around and could see no bonfires on the beaches. As I was walking back I noticed the bolt lighting to the south over Ano Nuevo Island. I immediately set up and used my built in intervalometer to take multiple 5 second photos concurrently. It took a while but the first strike I saw turned out to be the only one I got as you see above. I hope you all enjoy and please share :D Jeff

I got really bored last night, and felt like doing something "80s" ish on Photoshop. I really don't know if I like this or not, but I did spend a little while on it, so I thought I might as well upload it.
Willow Grove, PA - 9.22.10. I have been waiting all Spring & Summer to get photos of a real good thunder storm. Guess I had to wait until the first day of Autumn.

The weatherman was lying this morning...partly cloudy skies in Mt Shasta. Forgot to mention, a slight chance of thunderstorms. Dunsmuir and southern Siskiyou County got pelted by strong to severe thunderstorms on Monday, October 29th. Fall in Northern California can yield many meteorological surprises.
An Arizona Lightning Monsoon thunderstorm hitting in the midnight hour with lightning bolts striking over the McDowell Mountains and the North Scottsdale city lights below. This has a Sepia tone to it. 30 sec exposure.

Nature, flexing her muscles. We rarely see big thunderstorms like this in norway, i guess this one formed due to the unusually warm weather we´ve been having lately. The pouring rain and thunderclaps woke me up, so i grabbed my gear, and ran to a lookoutpoint near my home. Glad i did, these are my first lightningshots, and they turned out quite alright no?
The sheer power of bolts like this is quite overwhelming, i love beeing out in thunderstorms.

This is from last Tuesdays (June 7th, 2008) storm over DC. Incredible light show, best viewed from your car!
As the thunderstorm moved towards Milnerton, huge raindrops began to fall.
I decided to make my way to Signal Hill in the hope of getting a few more shots. As I passed Woodbridge Island the storm intensified with driving rain and extremely strong wind amidst frequent lightning strikes - truly bizarre how the weather transformed within 60 minutes.
Update: seems that this photo has been featured on Digg.
I'm still trying to capture their energy in an image.. one of the best live performances I've ever seen.
While out attempting to photograph the NEOWISE Comet I also took some shots at some (relatively) nearby lightning storms.
Mattoon, Illinois during the night hours as a thunderstorm pops out two mini lightning bolts facing north from last night (10/03/2013.)
There was also what appeared to be a raggedy shelf cloud that picked up in the exposures especially when the storm got a lot closer to town. As well, the storm's features were highlighted with a yellow-orange color thanks to Mattoon's city lights being picked up with longer shutter durations.
An old shot from August that I transitioned to black and white. I've never tried transitioning a lightning photo to black and white, but I like the way this one looks.

This Lightning photograph print used to hang in Oaxaca Restaurant in North Scottsdale Arizona. It was Fine Dining American food with a Mexican name. That was the gimmick. A name no one could pronounce. The restaurant and view is no longer there. It was one of the best in North Scottsdale. This used to be one of my safe zones. There was a great covered patio with this view. This is one 30 sec exposure. The original was shot on film and scanned in. Not as sharp as I would like from the scan.

There are a number of different scenarios where nature photographers feel very small I believe. Shooting stars comes to mind, but nothing can compare to an electric ceiling above you! Good thing I don't live in Kansas, because I would be chasing a lot more storms. I did use my better judgement and called it a night when the hair on the back of my neck stood on end. What a thrilling time. I am especially excited since this is my first legitimate lightning shot.
In a nutshell:
New camera in Panama... 3:30 am big storm with wonderful lightning. Tried to shoot from a moving ship in a windy storm... all shots worthless. Reading the new camera's operating instructions in the loo at 4:45 am. Little better, but unsatisfied with the shots.
That evening, before total darkness, a we reach another storm... about 230 shots and I finally get in the groove...
Got this shot... late for dinner, looking stunning with my wind-blown hair and mad-girl flashing eyes... can't wait for more...

P.S. Really missing my kids... grand canyon hole in my heart... who would've guessed?
Missing my Flickr friends heaps and can't wait to spend time checking out everyone's work...
Trekking about in Nicaragua again today... love, jenny

Late last night, perhaps around 11p, a small line of severe warned cells started moving into the Whitemarsh, PA area moving WNW towards NJ. Having struck out earlier, I made my way to a small park on the water in Florence, NJ, saw some lightning, took some pictures and then started heading home.
Having to stop for gas, I stopped off outside Bristol, PA and while I was filling my tank, a huge bolt dropped out of the sky to the East. Checking radar, there was a small cell starting to take shape that had been forming around Deptford, NJ but was beginning to take off south of Medford.
I didn't want to travel too far (I still had to work today) but found a place right on the water in Bristol, PA and was able to shoot right across the river, over Burlington, directly at this cell that at this point was moving more away from me than to one side or the other, so a pretty nice line-up. This cell threw out some pretty decent bolts and I'm glad I went out.
