Ribbon Lightning

Midnight Storm during the overnight hours of September 4th into the 5th. Some nice lightning this little storm produced. Northern Marinette County, WI.
This is the lightning photo I've always dreamed of taking. Dolly Sods Wilderness, in West Virginia, is some of the most breathtaking territory in the eastern United States. It's known for unusually shaped boulders, and it's flagged pines, caused by the continuous wind that blows on top of the mountain.
Note how the lightning is "flagged" on the same side as the pines.

Extremely violent storm off the coast at Mustang Island, Texas. Lightning bolts were landing so close I decided to shot the storm from inside. Thus the streaks from rain on the window in the photograph. Nikon D-810 with Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor 28-300 lens.
Totally random patterns tonight - the MonkeyLights were just cycling through their repertoire. I normally delete shots like this that don't come out so well, but I liked the shimmer on the bars and that weird swish in the background.
So here we are on the double yellow lines, with a little light painting to light them up. When that say isolated thunderstorms you can see how this one is "isolated", with star trails above and around the thunderhead. Love the white fence, and that is Colorado I-25 with car trails buzzing buy and lightning hitting in the background. Would have liked to been here a little earlier when the bolts were a little closer in but as we say... "it is , what it is" . At this point it's almost midnight, I decided to not chase this storm to Nebraska as it head further east and to head home. I am one that likes the storms to come to me :). Hope you like this image as much as I did making it. This is in southwest Weld County, settings - ISO 500 - f3.5 - 28mm - 30 sec exposure.

Lightning Bolts over the neighborhood captured during a thunderstorm in the early morning 0300hrs. (I was under the period of home self-isolation for covid19)
In this photographic instance, the intensely-lit streaks happen to travel across the frame from right to left in a flash creating some very exciting patterns in the night sky. A spectacular sight indeed, a bit scary though.
This is a natural phenomenon whereby electrostatic discharge occurs between 2 dissimilarly charged regions in the atmosphere followed by an instantaneous release of an enormous amount of electrical energy in the form of lightning streaks. This process also produces huge shock waves which resulted as sounds of thunder.
Without a doubt, it would be a scary affair if you are caught in the open during such an event with the prospect of being hit by one of these nasty bolts.
In ancient Greece, these phenomenon would be viewed as rivalry battles among the Gods in the heaven. Such conflicts are often the result of we human's misconduct. In order to have any form of resolution, offerings must be made to appease the Gods(polytheism) especially their chief, Zeus.
Well, today we know a great deal more about mother nature than the ancient world did. That's not the work of Gods over vicious disagreements but the work of natural electrostatic forces. However, the ancient folks are not dumb. With vivid imaginations, they managed to create powerful mythologies which made its way into their culture, literature and philosophy and even metamorphized into a religion which became the foundation for western civilization as a set of guiding principles. The very foundation was not only used to entertain, educate and propagate the world (as a pretext) but also as a very compelling tool to justify their political & religious appetite, motivations, bureaucracy, conquests and ambitions. Incidentally, those myths and legends that had been created so long ago are still in use by blood-tasty superpower western politicians till the present day as allegories to justify their geopolitical dominations, among others on the ground that they are so called "The World Leader'', "world police". But in fact, they are really a bunch of world bullies with peanut sized brains pivoted on greedy imperialism ideology. The economically weaker and the non-confrontational nations are being forced into submission to the western ideology with little or no choice, disregarding their long-standing culture, tradition, religious beliefs and whether they like it or not. When confronted with the oppressor's overwhelming military might, their largely unfair lopsided economic terms, deceptive unsustainable long term plans and toxic political influence invariably transform into a sweet recipe for success (only to the collective west though). The west has created an economic model in which all rules (world order) are written by them because they're so called the winner, guardian of the world, world democracy (well, in some sense yes but largely no) . A world in which the west plays the role of a sole predator and the rest are their easy preys. The rules are written in a way to make the prey forever prey or rather ever weaker prey so that they will never have a chance to stand up against their largely unfair rules let alone resist their attack. Any reluctance would be view as disobedient, rebellious, inappropriate and must be dealt with immediately with a nasty intimidating thing called sanction. which in most cases would tame the situation and reverse its course. For those that refuse to budge, there's another sweeter but a little bit more deadlier trick up the oppressor's sleeve, get ready for a swift and inevitable regime change, free of charge on the expense of blood-shed and political unrest of the nation concerned. This process will forcefully jettison the seemingly disobedient, highly dangerous, ideologically destructive leader and replace him with a damn 'peaceful' pro western 'law-abiding' human puppet. That would be considered as a highly educational move to get things back in proper alignment once more on the grounds that the west is helping to stabilize the 'artificially created' chaotic situation. Wow what a wonderfully constructed sugar-coated, peace-loving narrative by the world police. However, these fairy tales almost certainly never end with the people living happily ever after.... The exact opposite is true, people fighting and dying happily ever after.
The philosophy of world dominance is, it's easy to control the poor and even easier to control when you're poor and stupid. Similarly, it's difficult to control the rich and even more difficult if you're rich and clever. So the western hegemony make sure that nobody is richer and smarter than them, the master.
Such anachronistic, self defeating, selfish and highly toxic polarized attitude is not only despicable and barbaric but also catastrophic to the largely harmonized world.
Their appetite for power and world dominance continue to grow, and grow over the roof over time. The western oligarchs especially those from the weapons industries benefited from their bizarre economic model are showered with wealth beyond imagination and harness god-like power beyond human comprehension, however, they are so comfortably numb and oblivious to the fact that other nations have advanced too. In particular, China and Russia. They have grown up from poor stupid little kids to extremely clever and rich adults politically and they have all the rights as a human race to do so.. Now the what so called “i win you loose” US foreign policy which they imposed on others is being challenged by other nations and they are furious, insanely furious. The only way to contain this rise in economic power is to rage war irrationally, asserting indiscriminate military control measures (in short, joyfully kill the rebellious prey) which they are extremely good at containing the world for the last few decades but perhaps not the case anymore. Suddenly, the US and their gullible allies wake up from a very very sweet & comfortable dream and found themselves trapped in a very vulnerable position, in the midst of a fragile situation facing what they termed ‘enemies of the west’ simply because these people are far more diplomatic, sensible, rational, empathetic, logical, reasonable and exercise high level of common sense in dealing with geopolitical and economic problems than they do. The collective west (politicians) suddenly realized that they're just a self-licking ice cream cone after all.
Our common enemy though is certainly not one another but climate change, a fast deteriorating environmental condition which is a direct consequence of our activities as the human race progresses. A condition which could be addressed and must be addressed readily and responsibly over a long period of time before any positive outcome could be realized.
The only way to contain the detrimental effect of climate change is through concerted and well coordinated efforts of all nations wholeheartedly, spear-headed by the 'superpower' invariably, before it's all too late.
However, in hindsight we may not need to worry so much about dying from the slow-killing ill effects of climate change anymore. Incidentally, looking at the moldy development of the geopolitical tensions, the existence of the human race would likely come to a tragic end by our own actions, a nasty nuclear conflict instead.
Once the start button is depressed, the first thing that disappears is not the buildings nor the people. It's gonna be the deescalating button, the stop button if you like. It literally fails to exist anymore, you can't find it and put a finger on it and hopefully evade a nuclear catastrophe once it has started, there would be absolutely no avoiding fate for any human being and along with most lifeform on the planet. When that happen I'm afraid ITE (it's the end) That would mark the end of our civilization here on earth. A rather brief period of just a couple of millions years of human existence in the 4.5billion years of our planet's history.
....fast forward into the distant future...See you in about 300 million years later if...just if the place we called earth still exists. By some miraculous stroke of luck with the right combination of molecular structure and atmospheric conditions, life begins to evolve again, hooray ! Human would once again emerge as tiny little ape-like creatures, develop physically, learn to walk upright, walk the hell out of a huge continent coincidentally called Africa, becoming more intelligent, create civilizations, create nuclear weaponry(over a period of few million years of evolution) and mysteriously there's a US, Russia and China again, ting ting round 2, here we go again, and the rest, you guess ....history repeats itself once again....
Lightning, August 8, 2008
Taken in Provo, Utah (just east of BYU) looking south
The exposure time was 8 seconds, but these strikes were simultaneous
I already know what to do next time to improve my shots with lightning - but it was a HUGE learning experience for me regardless
A mirrored version of the photo from my previous post.

Sometime in June 2021 at home I photographed lots of forked lightning shots from several bad storms overnight.
Hot and muggy weather can be a drag, but this summer it brought thunderstorms!
We experienced extended tropical weather in Chicago in the summer of 2011. This week we may have another wave of 90+ days. This is not hot by global standards, but relatively warm for this temperate region.
Too close for comfort. Almost jumped out of my own skin. I didn't maintain focus here but the image is, well.. striking.
Explore #324 (high point). Thanks!
