Lightning over Perth taken from our balcony. The lightning looks a lot closer than it is. I suspect it was way out over the ocean but it's hard to tell.

See where this picture was taken. [?]

We have just come home after a holiday on the Isle of Wight. On 4th and 5th September we had some awesome thunder storms!

This photo was taken from the sea front at Sandown. I was recording video clips with my mobile phone (a Fairphone 4) then I used PIPP to extract the individual video frames, then processed the frames that contained lightning.

“About Sprite Lightning”

Sprites are large-scale electrical discharges that occur high above thunderstorm clouds, or cumulonimbus, giving rise to a quite varied range of visual shapes flickering in the night sky. They are usually triggered by the discharges of positive lightning between an underlying thundercloud and the ground. Sprites appear as luminous reddish-orange flashes. They often occur in clusters above the troposphere at an altitude range of 50–90 km (31–56 mi).

Sprites are sometimes inaccurately called upper-atmospheric lightning. However, sprites are cold plasma phenomena that lack the hot channel temperatures of tropospheric lightning, so they are more akin to fluorescent tube discharges than to lightning discharges.

Summer time is best to capture this phenomenon and much more like galaxy’s ring and planets and I’m exploring and working on it, so wait and watch for more wonders.

I got this after a heavy rain at my house. First attempt on capturing thunder, unedited.

Lightning on catnip... much funnier the last time (he did somersaults!), but of course, no camera.

I had the pleasure of experiencing a particularly beautiful display of lightning while visiting Pretoria.

These sacred messengers were sent by Great Spirit in a miraculous way. They live at Nemacolin Woodlands in south west Pennsylvania. Plaques surrounding their pasture read:

THUNDER AND LIGHTNING

The white buffalo, the male represents lightning. The black buffalo, the female represents thunder. This is not so much who they are but what they are. Regarded as sacred animals by Native Americans throughout the country, these two are seen as messengers from the Creator. Once our relationship with all living things was symbiotic and native people believe these two sacred animals have come as messengers to remind us to once again live in this symbiotic way.

Namacolin’s trail was the original pathway through these mountains on the way to Brownsville and the Three Rivers [Pittsburgh]. Today this trail is known as Route 40. This trail was opened by Chief Nemacolin and Thomas Cresap and later it was used by George Washington and General Braddock.

Why were these two born here? Events took place here that set this country on its path. The passage through these mountains was considered to be the “Gateway to the West”. The circle of Life has turned and come back to the beginning.

In 1754 the battle at Fort Necessity began the French & Indian War, which in turn led to the American Revolution giving birth to a new nation.

Over 250 years have passed and in that time seven generations have been born. This is the time of the seventh generation that was spoken of by the First Nations People of Turtle Island. These two messengers have come to initiate a new beginning.

The white buffalo is the healing of hatred, greed, envy, arrogance, and the destruction these things have caused. The black buffalo says this healing will happen.

YOU DECIDE: Now it is your turn to decide what this means to you and how this applies to you. Teach your children well, honor, respect, strength of character. This world is not ours, we only borrow it from our children.
