After a day of sand storms in the Kgalagadi, all went quite again. Then suddenly a few drops of rain, and off we went again, to photograph the expected unique event - rain in the Kgalagadi. Not to be, heavy lightning, purple sky, no more rain. (As one of the rangers commented, they had about 10 mm of rain, that being the average distance between the marks of the drops in the sand!) We did discover the following day a small patch where the road actually had some flood water damage!
This was a 3 sec exposure, handheld with beanbag support.
Good lightning storm on the backside of my building today! Linked up with a buddy of mine and took some shots. The lightning was incredible, my timing...not so much. Got a little tail in this one.
Took on film and digitalized.
Experimenting as a Lightning-Hunter, well I was in my home, aiming my lenses out of a window. 30" exposition gave me this. Heavy digital effects.
Have you ever watched a lightning storm in awe? Join the crowd. Oddly, nobody knows exactly how lightning is produced. What is known is that charges slowly separate in some clouds causing rapid electrical discharges (lightning), but how electrical charges get separated in clouds remains a topic of much research. Lightning usually takes a jagged course, rapidly heating a thin column of air to about three times the surface temperature of the Sun. The resulting shock wave starts supersonically and decays into the loud sound known as thunder. Lightning bolts are common in clouds during rainstorms, and on average 44 lightning bolts occur on the Earth every second. Last night it rained really hard here in Berlin and there were also a lot of lightnings. I immediately decided to head out to capture some lightnings. Ohhhhh I was so naive ^^. Trying to photograph lightnings is soooo frustrating. I had kneed in the rain for 1 1/2 hours and made about 150 shots but on just 5 were actually lightnings viewable. Kinda disappointing but maybe I used the wrong set up. Don't know.
A very short lightning storm, managed to get 3 shots before it stopped, and not enough time to run down to the beach!

Taken whilst beneath a restaurant on Fremantle fishing boat harbours boardwalk. The noise was unbelievable overhead. I was pumped (and just a little scared.....) www.cloudtogroundimages.com

I shot this just before sunrise one morning on the Northern Coast of Bali.
The flashes from the lightning woke me up, but I was sure that if I got up and tried to take a photo, I would miss it. So, I lied in bed for a while and when the storm didn't fade, I set up just outside the door to the little cabin I was in.
I just managed to capture this, the last flash of lightning before the storm faded and the sun rose.
