This is one image in a series of studio setups I am shooting. Unlike my flower series of several years ago, which I lit with traditional lighting, I shot these with a technique called Light Painting. The technique involves hand-holding small diffused flashlights and "brush stroking” the light where you want it while the camera’s shutter is open for a long exposure. I then blend several frames together in PS using the best elements from each frame to reach the desired look. This series features hand tools. I had several hammers I had gathered over the years and started adding to the collection for this series, picking up some gears and vintage oilers for some variety. a woman walking through a forest. or at least, that's what it looks like. shadows of branches stretch across the wall, the pavement, her path. a single spotlight follows her, as if the stage had been set just for this moment. a silent play in the middle of munich.

For some reason this works best as a non static image. If you look at it while rotating your phone or tablet it is much more interesting. Maybe I have to mount it on an oscillating motor.

My goal with this series is to explore every day scenes under the cover of darkness. A street corner, a lamp post, a doorway. Big city, small town, urban, rural. Man-made light versus nature’s darkness–––light and shadow interpreting minimalist settings in black and white. To see more in this series, check out Cover Of Darkness
Early on in the COVER OF NIGHT series, I shot a couple gas stations. They were not initially the type scene I was looking to capture, but when I came across one late at night, bright and isolated in the darkness, it was impossible for me to resist, so I continue to shoot them. I have now shot enough that they have become a series-within-the-series. For a look at them as a collection, check out, Gas Stations
