This library has a huge mural on the front of it called, "Word of Life". It depicts Jesus with upraised arms much like a football referee would do when an American football team scores a touchdown. Hence the nickname, "Touchdown Jesus". Ironically, this library is near the university's football stadium.
This is a part of my series titled "Helen Platt". The series is about my grandma and her day to day life as a 92 year old woman. I also captured details of her house, momentos and other trinkets, to show her journey through life.

The Libraries have many quiet study spaces for you to work. The Suzzallo reading room is one of the most recognizable quiet study areas on campus.
The former Cabell County Public Library building in Huntington WV was a Carnegie library building. The library moved into a new, larger structure across the street in the mid 1970s. This is a view of the old building (and its midday solstice shadows) as seen from the door of the new one.
We finally got around to assembling one of the a/v shelf units that I ordered from The Library Store. While I'm happy with it as far as ease of assembly, and the finished product, I felt shafted when we opened the box and discovered that every single piece of it is MDF board with a thin veneer of wood on the surfaces that show. The ad did not mention MDF, only the different types of wood. I would not have paid what I did if I'd known that we were getting MDF.

The main reading room of the KU Leuven University Library, which has been rebuilt by the Allies (under the impulsion of H. Hoover) after the Germans torched its 14th century predecessor during WWI. The library was destroyed a second time during WWII, this time due to heavy bombing by the Allies (ironically leaving only the Japanese collection intact). And they say that the third disaster was the splitting of the collections following the divorce between the French and Flemish-speaking communities, eventually leading to the creation of the Université Catholique de Louvain la Neuve... Not a quiet place to be a Librarian...

The Central Public Library was officially opened in 1912 by Alderman Amos Hinton. Built on two plots of land, one donated by Sir Hugh Bell, the other by Alderman Amos Hinton, the foundation stone was laid in 1910 and the building, sometimes known as the Carnegie Library, was officially opened on 8th May, 1912. Featuring a classical design selected from 203 submissions, its architects were Messrs. S. B. Russell and T. E. Cooper, of Gray's Inn Square, London.
In its original form, it provided a lending library where boys' and girls' sections were separated by a screen, a ladies' reading room, a central news room with a separate entrance in Grange Road, and on the first floor were the law and patent and reference libraries. This was Middlesbrough's first purpose-built premises to house its public library.
From the library website:
"The Old Mill Shopping Center (also called the Old Mill Speciality Center) opened in 1976. Considered a 'Ghiradelli-type' shopping area, the new indoor development boasted boutique shops, movies, trendy restaurants and a waterfall and creek all centering around its namesake working mill. By 1987, the Old Mill was experiencing hard times. It closed, gutted the inside and reopened as the Old Mill Public Market. Here tenants sold everthing from kitchenware to dried fruits to wine to imported and ethnic foods. The new concept was not successful and the market closed in 1989. The Crossings, a mixed residential community of apartments, townhouses and single family homes, now occupies the former site of the Old Mill."
As part of our campus beautification project we were able to replace our furniture. How nice! The student use this area to relax, study and read the daily newspapers or magazines. This summer we will be doing some painting.

Historic Carnegie Library, built 1913, Hot Springs, South Dakota. The city center contains over 35 sandstone buildings and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Hot Springs is one of the warmest places in South Dakota with an annual mean temperature of 48.6 °F (9.2 °C). Some of the attractions in the Hot Springs area are the Mammoth Site of Hot Springs and Evans Plunge with its naturally warm 87 °F (31 °C) spring water. The town is a gateway to the attractions of the southern Black Hills, particularly Wind Cave National Park. Hot Springs holds the annual Miss South Dakota pageant. In recognition of its historic value, the National Trust for Historic Preservation listed Hot Springs as one of its 2009 Dozen Distinctive Destinations. (Wikipedia)
A Carnegie library is a library built with money donated by Scottish-American businessman and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. More than 2,500 Carnegie libraries were built, including some belonging to public and university library systems.
Of the 2,509 such libraries funded between 1883 and 1929, 1,689 were built in the United States, 660 in Britain and Ireland, 125 in Canada, and others in Australia, New Zealand, Serbia, the Caribbean, and Fiji. Very few towns that requested a grant and agreed to his terms were refused. When the last grant was made in 1919, there were 3,500 libraries in the United States, nearly half of them built with construction grants paid by Carnegie. (Wikipedia)
One of the side passageways in the Library of Congress. Love the shiny gold ceiling.
The building was renamed to the "Thomas Jefferson Building" in 1980. It was completed in 1897 and has one of the most elaborate interiors I've ever seen outside a church. I have a lot of pictures of it! :)
